4/17/06: Cookie is here! She's a sweet little 5 month old girl with TERRIBLE hips. She was rescued by a wonderful vet in central Iowa who, unfortunately, had to turn her over to RAGOM so she could get the medical care she needs. Sounds as if she's going to need TPO (triple pelvic osteotomy) and fortunately this can be done at a young age and the only place to do it is at Iowa State University (because she's in Iowa). Potty training is going very well with her and last night she got to sleep in the bedroom with me on a nice comfy dog bed....she was such a good girl!! We are going to the vet on Thursday to get her hips x-rayed, spay stitches out and to have an abnormality checked out on her sternum. More to come on Thursday....

Here's a couple of new pictures of Cookie lounging on the couch with Todd. She's doing really well with her rehabilitation and she gets her stitches out today. She's the sweetest little gal you could ask to meet. She's mostly housetrained and hasn't had an accident in a long time. Her crate is only used if we are going to be gone for more than a couple of hours and she sleeps on her dog bed below our bed every night. She's such a joy to have around!

Cookie has returned home from ISU and she's doing wonderful! She was already using her leg the day after surgery! The med student told me that she was a favorite at the hospital for those few days....I can believe it, she's so sweet and beautiful. She has three medications she has to have each day and we're trying to keep her quiet until Sunday or Monday. On Monday we will start some exercises that will resemble bicycle pedaling. This is going to help her to maintain the range of motion. She will begin going for walks next Thursday and increase the duration each day. We'll have to be searching out small inclines to encourage her to use that leg, which I don't think will be a problem. The walks will continue daily until her next surgery on July 13th when she has the other hip done. She's been a trooper through it all and she was glad to get home last night!!
