Cooper (Harrison 07-708)

Profile

Happy New Year!

Let me introduce you to Harrison 07-708 . Harrison is a petite Golden mix 8 week old puppy who is residing in foster care in Iowa - it's cold and snowy here today. He won't last long on the adoption page! He is just as cute as can be!

This little guy is an active healthy pup who is curious & sweet and loves to eat his dry dog food.

He slept quietly in his crate on the drive home from Albert Lea, MN but fussed a little in the night. I think he is trying to adjust to all the changes in his life ... he was just separated from the litter and that's hard on a little guy.

He likes to be held and cuddle and I have noticed when he comes in from outside he shivers for a little bit. Poor thing. So I have a blanket handy to wrap him with.

I have enclosed a few pics of him. One shows him trying to figure out how to get thru the baby gate! These baby gates are a huge help with puppies.

I plan to call the vet and see when he would like to meet Harrison. He has had some puppy shots already.

More updates to come as we get to know this little fella.

Also, Harrison would like to give a world of thanks to his transporters who helped him yesterday!

This is our "Cooper" - he came to us as *Harrison 07-708*. All photos were taken by Deb D - Cooper's forever Mom.

We live on a lake in central Minnesota and adopted Cooper in January of 2008. As you can see, Cooper LOVES the water. There was no hesitation once the ice went off the lake. Cooper sneaks around the house and straight off the end of the dock into the lake for a swim.
Cooper was taking a nap in the sun while we were unpacking after a long weekend of camping. Coop was just too tired to help out!
Shortly after our adoption in January of 2008, Cooper found he loved the morning sun on our bed. To this day that is where you will find him in the mornings.
This was taken shortly after our adoption in January of 2008. Cooper was "helping" me put away Christmas decorations. He loves the newspaper even though he can't read yet!

We are so thrilled with RAGOM and our adoption.  We have had our Cooper (fka Harrison) for over a year now and he is the most beautiful dog.  We have gone to several obedience classes and walk as much as possible, but with living in Minnesota, the weather does not always permit.  Cooper is so patient when we can't go out.  He hates to get cold so I don't think he minds too much when we can't walk. He makes his trips outside pretty quick. In fact he now sleeps under the quilts with us at night.  He does not settle for just being on the bed.

Cooper has the best possible temperament.  He is always happy and excited to see ANYONE.  We are working on his excitement so that he can one day become a therapy dog.  Cooper has passed his good citizenship certification and is now more than one year old, so our only hurdle is getting him a bit calmer when visiting :-)

As you can see, Cooper loves the water and it is sometimes a challenge to keep him dry, but already he is so obedient if we say no...or stay... he listens.  Amazing for a year old we think.  We'll see what this summer brings.  Again a huge thank you to RAGOM and everyone that helped us be put together. WOW - I can't believe Cooper has only been with us four weeks now!  We have done so many things already - Cooper LOVES car rides and has finally figured out that he goes with us but always comes back with us too.   He hops into the back seat and on his blanket like he has done it forever.  He will look out the window for a minute and then it is nap time. We have had two puppy classes so far - he is a star pupil for sure!  - Cooper is so attentive and obedient - he is completely house trained (he is very treat driven :-) he can "sit", "down", "stay", "come" and we are working on "heel" - It has been so cold out to get outside and walk - and it is just not the same indoors - when we get outside for a walk he is so good! we walk two miles and he has no trouble at all with that.  Ideally when the weather is nicer we can walk a lot more, and I know it will make such a difference with his energy.  He is so happy to get out and walk with us.

He knows already that he is not allowed near the road.  We bought an e collar and taught him the perimeter of the yard that was OK and safe for him. Two days and he had that down - we haven't used it since and he has not even thought of straying out - he waits for us and the leash and then he knows it is OK to go further.  We will put fencing back up on the side by the lake in the Spring though to keep other "critters" away from him and to limit the swimming and "wet dog hours" too late in the day - he sleeps on our bed so we prefer it dry and not soggy :-)

Cooper has nearly stopped the puppy chewing - and we drill obedience when he gets bored - seems to work -

He is a real bandit - that certainly would have been a fitting name for him!  - he moves everything from room to room - he piles up all the rugs, toys, and anything else he takes a fancy to (sometimes laundry from the basket) and looks so proud of himself.  He still goes crazy when he can grab a piece of paper and run with it though.  Oh well, he is a puppy after all.  He plays so hard and then crashes on the couch now that he can reach it. We have therapy dog classes every other Wednesday night - we can't do much other than socialize but that is a good thing too - Cooper has to be totally trained and certified in obedience and he also has to be at least one year old to even test for his therapy dog certification.  We are excited for that day - we are certain he will pass easily with the way he is already doing.  We plan to do a lot of camping this summer and keep exposing him to lots of different things.  We would like to not only visit the nursing homes but visit shut-ins, and we have a real call for hospital visits when people come out of surgery for the therapy dogs.  So the more we can expose him to now - the easier it will be for him when we start therapy dog visits. Thanks to everyone at RAGOM for your help in putting us together with Cooper - especially Regina and her husband for taking care of Cooper until he could come to his forever home with us. Harrison has moved to Minnesota where he is hanging out in a new foster home for a few days until he can meet up with a possible forever family.  Harrison is possibly the most out-going and fearless puppies that I have ever met!  I know that could easily sound like a nice way of saying that Harry is "trouble," but he is not!  He has not chewed on anything in appropriate in and is very good at entertaining himself with dog toys when our resident dog won't play with him anymore.  He is almost completely house trained, the only accident was totally our fault.  He sleeps quietly in his crate at night and is a good eater.

Harry has met the cats at our foster home and is developing a healthy respect for them.  He is also learning that the grouchy older dog wants nothing to do with him.  He has, however, convinced our 3 year old golden to play with him.  Harry loves to play with other dogs and is not intimated by big dogs.  This evening we took him to an obedience class with our resident dog and his favorite playmate there was a 75 pound, 8 month old German Shepherd!

He is a fabulous dog and any family would be lucky to adopt him.
We will report back after he meets his possibly adoptive family on Tuesday!

Tail pulling Notice the tail pulling evidence!
I love my foster brother! Tugggggg!  (This toy is now dead)

Now I see why this is the cats' favorite spot!

It doesn't get more adorable

Harrison had a great week! He continues to grow and explore his world while in foster care. He goes for car rides, plays with toys, rolls in the snow, and races thru our house. His favorite thing to do is annoy the two Goldens in his foster home by barking at them & pulling on chunks of their tail and fur.

Harrison enjoys the company of both humans and dogs. He does not have many fears. I would describe him as an overall courageous and socially adjusted puppy. His weight is about 11 lbs; but, don't let his size fool you. He is not afraid of much.

Sometimes we call him "Harry" or "Harold" short for Harrison.

He will need both training and discipline in the coming weeks because he has a personality on him that would like to take control. Harrison would like to be the boss; so, we have been convincing him otherwise!

He is doing good on housebreaking and crate training ( sleeps thru the night without fussing ) ; although we have decided to limit the amount of rooms he can explore in our home because he has been having some accidents. We are trying to teach him commands and also what "no" means. He particularly needs help with puppy biting. We took him to visit my parent's home last weekend and he was a wonderful little house guest.

Harrison just got home from the vet with a clean bill of health.

The vet said he looks good and has a strong heart and clear lungs. His fecal came back negative ( relief! ) and he impressed the staff with his cute and gentle nature.

Harrison is settling in very well to foster care. He will play, play, play and then sleep, sleep, sleep. He seems happy and content to be here with us; although, my two resident dogs don't elect to play with him. Poor Harrison. I will have to arrange some other doggy play dates for him.

He seems very smart as he is already signaling to us when he has to potty... he will run over to our sliding door and scratch.

He fusses a little bit when he is crated but after some whining, groaning, and moaning, he finally settles down. It's funny to listen to him at night  at bedtime.

He is looking for his forever family now ... one that wants to make a commitment to a puppy.

He will bring you lots of love and enjoyment.

More updates to come!
