Copper 07-221

Profile

4/11/07: Copper is a very sweet, dark red, 4 year old, AKC registered male, who came to RAGOM because he wasn't working out as a hunting dog. He seems very smart and is energetic, more like a puppy than a 4 year old. He is smaller in stature, but is stocky and could lose a few pounds. He has been pretty agitated since he arrived on Tuesday, lots of panting and some skittishness. He's starting to come down a bit, and begs to to be loved and cuddled. When we come in the door he picks up his squeaky toy, or his leash, or a shoe...whatever is close at hand...to present as a gift. He thinks he's pretty cute (I agree). He has spent the last two years in an outdoor run and unheated pole barn so has an amazingly thick, gorgeous coat.

Copper has not chewed on anything inappropriate, or anything for that matter. He just holds his toys in his mouth. I've been gating him in the kitchen at night and when we're not home. He settles right in and takes a rest. He was housetrained for the first two years of his life, and he seems to have picked that up again without any trouble. He did okay in the tub the first day here, but he'll be getting a full beauty shop appointment because he has so much fur. I think he found heaven when I was drying him, practically standing on his head, trying to lean into the rubbing. Copper is seeing the vet this afternoon and we'll need to schedule him to be neutered. After that he'll be ready for his new forever home. My first impression is that he'll need a family that will give him lots of exercise and petting and cuddling and scratching. Obedience training will also help tame some of that puppiness. He is good with my 10 year old. His previous owner reports he is good with children, and also with other dogs and cats, though I've not tested that yet. I have a feeling Copper won't be in foster care for long!
