Miss Copper Penny arrived at our house last night, and in her first 24 hours has been an absolute doll.  Copper is a 14-month old spayed female who weighs about 50 pounds.  She went to the vet today and got a thorough checkup, she tested positive for whipworm so is on medication that should have them cleaned out of her intestine within a few days.  She’s a bit underweight, but I’m guessing that will resolve itself once the worms are gone.  She met our 2 dogs and cats with no problems, and is just tiptoeing around trying not to offend anyone.  Even when the resident greedy dog stuck her head into the toy basket and laid it across all the toys in an effort to keep from sharing anything (oink, oink), Copper just patiently went away and waited until the dog went elsewhere before going back to rummage for a tennis ball.  In her first 24 hours we have already started teaching her all the bad habits that all our fosters pick up, like saying hello when someone walks in “our” park and we see them out the window (resident dog Mindy to thank for that one), and reading stories together with the kids on the bed each night.  Tonight she hopped up on my daughter’s bed and snuggled in like she’s been doing it her whole life. 

Copper is housetrained – yesssss!  She hasn’t had any accidents and tonight whined at the sliding doors when she needed to go out.  Unfortunately she will only stay out if I go with her, so by the time she completed her business tonight I was feeling a bit like a popsicle.  We’ll work on independence in that area.  Copper is a typical puppy of this age, she has lots of energy, wants to play with my dogs, yet she really quiets down sometimes too.  She’s not hyper at all, more what I would describe as busy at this point – on the move a lot getting toys and seeing what all the others in the house are doing.

Copper is still doing quite well with her new family. She is enjoying the beautiful summer we've had this year, which is evident by her leaf pile trampling with her big brothers.

She is still very much a dog that needs attachment. She loves to be touching her doggy brother, Louie. If her people are home watching TV, she is quick to snuggle. Copper is a great watch dog. We always know when the mailman is near, or if a squirrel is in the yard. She has an impressive bark for such a small dog!

When her human father comes home from work she is the first to greet him. If yard work needs to get done, Copper makes sure that her humans remember that there's always time to play, and perpetually drops a ball in the path of mowing or leaf picking upping... can't beat her smile.

From Copper Penny's forever family...

Copper is having a terrific summer. She loves to go hiking with us, and we learned that she's a natural swimmer. We're lucky to have a 70 acre dog park in our city that includes a mowed field and trails; Copper loves going there, too! She still very much likes playing fetch, and she hasn't gotten over her need to be snuggled up with a person or her big doggy brother, Louie.

She did some remodeling on our house- chewed the window frame by the front door- which was most likely out of nervousness when she and Louie were left home alone. She stopped doing that, thankfully, and hasn't wrecked anything else since (a basket and Legos, among other things fell victim to her nervousness).

We still think Copper has some sort of sight hound in her, based on her physique, appearance, and her rabbit drive. (Some think she's part Saluki) We decided to install invisible fence, which she picked up within two days. She hasn't run out of the yard since (previously she'd only make it to the neighbors, and recalled very nicely).

Copper's weight is still hovering around the low 40's, and the vet said she thinks that's about as big as Copper will get. She eats well, and is healthy otherwise, so we're not worried.

There's more summer to enjoy, so we'll be sure to give another update.

From Copper Penny's forever family...

Copper Penny is doing very well with her new family. Her big furry brother, Louie, is learning how to share the doggie spotlight. Copper seems lost without him- she acts like a little fish that attaches herself to a whale, never leaving the whale's side, no matter how hard the whale tries to shake the little fish. It's most apparent on walks; Copper clings to Louie's side no matter how long the walk is.

She graduated from beginner doggie school tonight. Not with flying colors, but she passed. Thankfully there was a pointer in the class that took the focus off the little issues the rest of the dogs had.

Copper still snuggles with her five-year-old human brother at night, and their bond grows closer as the two of them grow. She tries to sneak onto mommy & daddy's bed, but that's a no-no- and she knows it; she won't make eye contact when she's where she isn't supposed to be.

We think Copper has some Greyhound in her- she sprints like no other, and rabbits are her drive. She is still only 43 pounds, and runs like the wind. Thankfully she likes it here and comes back when called. Her geriatric brother Louie never had that in him, so it's new to us.

We're learning.

Here's a couple of photos of Copper and her new big brother, Louie. Louie is seven years old, and while he may look gigantic or overweight, he's not- Copper is just that petite! We're working on getting some weight on her (she's only 38 lbs). Right now the dogs and our family are getting cabin fever- too cold to go out (it's 30 below!).

The dogs are getting along very well. They love to play tug, and Copper pretty much steals any toy Louie has. She runs like a deer in the back yard, and is doing pretty well at coming when called. She's a high-energy dog that LOVES to play fetch. Copper is beyond a velcro golden; she loves to be ON her people, not just near them!

Copper is all settled in her new house, and they sent these adorable pictures.  Copper's new little boy was hoping Copper would sleep with him at night, and as you can see he got his wish!  She is one lucky dog, and they are one lucky family!  :)
