To meet and know this dog is to fall in love with his kindness, gentle eyes and beautiful personality....

This is Corey.  He is a gorgeous 4 year old male with the most amazing coat.  I've never seen anything like it.  He is going to be groomed next week so I can't imagine how good it will look then.  He was pretty stinky when he first arrived and we gave him two baths.  That helped alot and he loved being brushed out.  He loves to be brushed anytime and with his long coat, his adoptive family will need to commit to following thru with brushing him often.

Corey came to live with us on Sunday.  He had been an outdoor dog the last 4 years and primarily living in a barn, so he was happy to get into our home with the AC running to keep cool.  Corey met our resident golden with no issues and he has met about 7 other dogs since, doing perfect with all of them.  He's met our cat and wants to sniff her out of curiosity, but is not aggressive at all and he previously lived with cats on the farm.

Corey went to the vet yesterday and is up to date on all shots now.  He is HW and Lyme negative which is great since I've pulled about 25 ticks off him since he's been here.  He is now on Frontline and will be completely rid of ticks very soon.  He weighed in at 73# and the vet said his ideal weight would be 79-80#.  He walks pretty well on a leash and does not pull at all. He wanders a bit side to side, but I think that will change as he gets more leash time.  He was nervous a bit in the car, but is quickly getting used to riding around and with that also, should get better the more he rides.

Corey's personality is one of a kind.  He is so sweet with our toddler son and he gets very happy when he hears our son's voice each morning when he gets up.  Corey has a very calm personality that is impossible to not love.  His big blocky head and brown eyes quickly proceed to melt your heart shortly after meeting him.  He is so gentle and only wants to be loved. Corey is a bit timid and crouches down in newer situations, but as he gains more confidence and experience, I'm sure this will get better.  After all, he's just been removed from the only home/environment he's ever known.  He loves to follow our resident golden, Lucy, around the back yard and takes many ques from her.  She's a good confident mentor for him in his new golden life and I definitely think another dog in his adoptive home would be best.

So now that you've read all abut the good things, I have some bad news about sweet Corey.  He has a growth on his right front leg below his elbow.  The vet drew a sample of it and it is a mast cell tumor.  It needs to be removed ASAP so it can be determined if it is benign or malignant.  His surgery is scheduled for next week with hopes of getting him in sooner.  After it is removed, we will find out what is next for this big lovable boy.  He deserves the best for the rest of his life.  If you've been thinking of sponsoring one of the wonderful RAGOM dogs, Corey would love to be that dog.  His surgery and vet costs will grow.

We will continue to send in frequent updates on him.  Thank you for reading all about him.

Mozart, I had a dream the other night that you came home to your family.  We all still pray for this....

Updates

I want to thank Ragom again for allowing us to meet and adopt this wonderful boy. He has melted many hearts since coming to our home. We brought him home August 11th and I thought I would fill you in on Corey's new life since joining our family.

Corey is VERY loved by our two little girls. Sydney (3 1/2) and Macy (15 months) give Corey so much love and attention. When Macy wakes up in the moring, the first thing she says is "Co-Co!" and looks for him in the hallway. He usually strolls in to check her out and get a few pets. Corey lets Macy snuggle him all she wants. Even when she gets a little TOO loving, he just gets up and moves - never a growl or a sign of aggression. Our older daughter, Sydney, loves to give him treats and helps with the brushing. She also has been coming up with a new halloween costume idea for him daily. :)

It has been a slow process for Corey to come out of his shell. We live on a lake and for the first two weeks, he was very afraid of the waves and the water. He had no interest. Now today he was fetching his favorite toy out of the shallow water. He is still too timid to come out far enough to swim, but that is just fine with us. A big, hairy retriever takes a while to dry. :) Corey has also learned to fetch and after a happy day out in the yard he will run silly circles around us. It is a joy to watch and brings tears to my eyes. I had no idea how proud I could ever be of a dog.

Corey did have a little sore on his foot when we brought him home. The vet biopsied the area and found it to be a bacterial and fungal infection. We treated it with topical antifungals and oral antibiotics and it has now essentially stabilized. The vet thinks it will slowly go away.

Corey also has had some issues with separation anxiety. Who can blame him? He has had a lot of transition in his life. We have worked with him and he is slowly getting better. He does have free roam of the house and that has seemed to be the best for him. He gets very anxious if we gate him in a room. I hope this continues to get better with time.

I think that about sums it up for Corey.... He is living a great life and we are loving him to pieces.

Love,
The W family

It was a big day for Corey boy yesterday. He went home with his forever family. He came here for just a few weeks and we had the privilege of seeing him blossom into the sweetest boy we've ever had here. He has hit the jackpot with his new family and he will be A #1 for them and get all their attention. Thank you again to Meagan M, and Meg M and her wedding guests for sponsoring sweet Corey. He has now started his golden life....

Attached are some final pics I took of him yesterday before he left.

Early reports are that he is doing great in his new home!

Thank you for reading about him. And thank you to RAGOM for taking this guy in.

What is Lucy barking at?

My handsome profile

Here I am!

Corey is doing great here still. We finally heard him bark the other night! He's got a great, deep bark. Yesterday I was working and I heard him barking out the front door. So I went and looked and just enjoyed it. After barking a handful of times, he turned around and was surprised to see me and almost seemed embarrassed that I 'caught him' barking. I just gave him a big hug. Experiencing little things like this are what make fostering so rewarding...

Guess what? Corey has another angel of a sponsor!!! In fact, they must be twin angels, because they have the same first name and last initial....Meagan and Meg M. How cool is that??? I've attached a special photo for the two of you to enjoy. It shows him smiling and enjoying his time outside now that it is much cooler. Thank you soooo much to the both of you (and the wedding guests) for choosing Corey to sponsor.

A couple of things on the health status of Corey....He seems to have some seasonal allergies. He was rubbing himself up against our fence alot and it got to the point where he was getting scabs on his neck and cheeks. So per the vet's recommendation, we are giving him some benedryl and that seems to be helping alot. He seems much happier and he does not run to the fence first thing when we go outside.

His incisions from his neuter and tumor removal look great and he continues to leave them alone. His adoptive family will take him in to their vet to have the staples removed from his leg and start a file with them.

His biopsy results came back from the tumor. It was a malignant mast cell tumor of an aggressive form of cancer. However, it was considered very low grade, which is great news, and the vet was able to get very good margins on the removal and the entire tumor was removed. The vet said that with this form of cancer, it may return a year from now or 10 years from now in the form of a new tumor. Or he said it may never show up again. It is something to keep an eye out for, but he said it is impossible to predict. So all in all, I think it is a great turnout of results for Corey and we are very excited for him to continue with his golden life thanks to RAGOM and his sponsors.

At this point, the plan is still for him to be adopted on Thursday evening. Of course, we will enjoy our last few days with him here....

Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers for Corey. He is such a sweet pup and could easily go by the name of 'Gentle Ben'......

Just give us the treats already

I'm very happy these days

Thank you to my angels Meg and Meagan

Corey had his surgery today. They removed the tumor from his leg, neutered him and cleaned his teeth. He did great and I picked him up at 5:30. He is still way out of it, but I was encouraged to see him go to the sliding door to ask to go out and do both 1 and 2, even though he seems pretty groggy....

He is resting now as seen in the photo. We will watch him closely, but he seems to be good and the vet said everything went great. The tooth they thought was cracked was in fact not cracked. So they did not have to pull it.

I found out more about Corey's sponsor, Meg, today. It seems Meg is going to be getting married in October and she and her fiance wanted to make a donation to RAGOM to honor all of their wedding guests that will be attending. Each guest will receive a write-up on RAGOM and Corey and his story. How cool is that? What a great idea! Thank you again Meg (and to all their wedding guests) for the sponsorship of Corey. It will certainly help with his vet bills. We wish you and your fiance the very best together with many, many years of happiness! Corey said he wants to go to the wedding and be the ring bearer.... :-)

The vet said Corey's biopsy will take 7-14 days to get the results. We will pray for the best.

Now for some really great news.... Corey has a family coming to meet him on Saturday.  I will send in a new update after that.  Until then, I'm going to pamper him and let him recover nicely.

Thank you for reading up on him and keeping him in your thoughts.

Corey is back from the groomer and he smells so good and clean! He is stunningly handsome. The groomer did a great job trimming his feet and his legs and the feathers on the back of his legs. We can actually see his feet and toes again. Before he looked like he had Wookie paws.

He looks great! I've attached some photos of him to enjoy, before he gets part of his leg shaved at surgery tomorrow.

Wish him luck with surgery and the outcome and please keep him in your thoughts. I will send in an update after we get him back from the vet and hear the prognosis.

Corey says "Woof!!". (Actually, he never barks - yet)

We've had the pleasure and privilege of our guest, Corey, for 7 days now.  It is very difficult for me to tell you just how sweet and kind this dog is...  It is as if he's been saving all of his love the last four years for us.  Corey is an absolute gentleman and a dream to have here...

Thank you soooo much to Meg M. for choosing to sponsor Corey.  It always amazes me to see people sponsor a dog with their own money, and more often than not, a dog they've never even met or may never meet.  It is sponsors like you Meg, that allow RAGOM to continue rescuing sweet pups like Corey and parlay them into their golden lives.  Thank you and Corey has a big kiss waiting for you!!!

Here are some new things we've discovered about him and his personality.

  • We had to teach him how to go up and down stairs.  He was afraid to do so at first, as I'm guessing he may have never seen them before.  But now he goes up and down like a pro.
  • We are treating him for a double ear infection.  Some good cleaning daily with ointment and antibiotic will help clear up his ears within a week or so.  They were very dirty when he arrived, but he lets us clean them and put the drops in them with no problems at all.
  • Corey was pretty fearful of our wood floors here at first.  As we've done in the past with fosters who are not comfy with the wood floors, we cover the main walk ways with carpet remnants.  This allowed him to get around until he grew more comfortable with our routine and home.  Then yesterday, my wife hosted a baby shower and we took up all the remnants.  After the shower, he has done remarkably well on the floors without the remnants and I expect this to only get better.  He will get his nails trimmed on Tuesday at the groomer and this too will help him with our floors.
  • Corey is awesome with young kids.  He is a big hit with all the neighbor kids.  When I take him outside in the back yard or front yard, the kids all come running over to see him and his tail wiggles with happiness.
  • Corey wags only the tip of his tail right now.  I think he is still coming out of his shell.  He has come a long way in a week's time.

Corey will be professionally groomed on Tuesday.  We can't wait to see how he looks when he returns.  I will post an update with pics on Tuesday night.  Then Corey goes in to have surgery on Wednesday morning.  He will have the tumor removed from his leg.  He will also have what the vet thinks is a cracked molar removed if it needs to be.  He will also be neutered, if the tumor removal goes well and he is not under for too long.  I will be sure to post the results of everything as soon as I know on Wednesday.

Corey does like to play fetch and brings it back most of the time.  It has been so hot out that we do not play much, but he does like toys.  In fact he likes to collect them all.  I really anticipate a silly boy coming out of his shell in the next week or so.  At times, I catch a glimpse of it in the backyard and I can't wait to see it all the time.

I took Corey for a long walk on Thursday morning.  He walks like a dream.  He stayed right by my side the whole time he never pulled.  He did get tired towards the end so I will be planning more walks with him to get his fitness up and build some muscle tone in his rear legs.

Corey has had NO accidents in the house.  He was kenneled in our kitchen over night for the first few nights, then we gave him a third bath on Friday morning and he finally does not stink anymore.  So we let him sleep in our bedroom with us since then and he does great.  He is a pretty heavy sleeper at times and I once had to gently shake him to wake him from a nap.  I did not want to startle him, just wake him.

We also left for 6 hours today to do some shopping.  We baby gated him in our main kitchen/dining area and he did great.  Then we had to leave again for a couple more hours and we gave him free roam of the main floor with our resident Lucy.  Corey did chew on a toy car of my son's so we will be sure to pick up all his toys before we leave next time.  I think he naps the entire time we are gone.   He does like his naps, and he especially likes them while laying next to me in the cool basement while I work in my office....

If you think you'd like to meet this one of kind, gentle boy then let your placement adviser know.

Thank you for reading up on him and Thank you again for sponsoring him, Meg.   Please keep Corey in your thoughts for his surgery on Wednesday and for good results on the biopsy.
