Cubby enjoys country life and is more of a farm dog. He loves attention and playing ball. Cubby is very watchful and is aware of any movements going on around him. I enclosed a picture of him outdoors. He loves to chase rabbits or cats, so has a high prey drive. He does play with the resident dog occasionally.
He will sleep sometimes on the end of the bed or sleeps on the couch or dog bed. Cubby does not like to be touched when he is eating. Some human food will upset his tummy at times. He is a good eater and likes his treats.
Cubby is very smart when taking pills (medicine, heartworm and flea and tick) and will spit them out. (I think he can smell them before you give them). So far hot dogs have helped in giving Cubby pills. If they are stuck inside one piece of hot dog, then a second piece of hot dog is offered right after giving the first one. If the pill is sticking out he refuses to take it.
He is fearful of fireworks and gunshots and will bark and look to people for protection. He is still very upset and nervous when seeing other dogs. He becomes more anxious and nervous in town and demonstrates more behavior issues.
Cubby is a loving dog who needs a country setting and more experienced dog owner.

Cubby has just gone through dental cleaning and during review they found he had an extra tooth way in back on top, which they pulled. He is doing fine and all healed as of today. No decay or infected teeth, just needed cleaning. See photo of Cubby and his new toy for Christmas.

Cubby has been with us almost two weeks and has settled in nicely. Every day he seems to get cuter as he is more trusting of his new home, us and the dogs. We have not introduced him to any other dogs since coming to our house. He has seen some on walks and gets excited and barks. We will work on meeting and greeting dogs.
He hadn't previously learned how to initiate play, and barking at our dogs did not catch on. Now he has learned that a little nudge, a ball or that look…it’s time to play!
Every morning after our walk, Jack nudges Cubby and they start to wrestle. Then we head over to the fenced area so they can run and chase until Jack gets exhausted. Tyson, being almost 11, has the desire to chase but knows he will get run over, so he stays out of the way.
We started behavioral training last week so Cubby can become a confident dog who will be successful in an adoptive home. His trainers said he was very smart, and he caught on quickly. I agree - we do some sort of trick training or play, and he has either learned a lot or had some trick training before. He likes the stimulation of training.
He loves to jump in the car when the door is open, but he has shown stress on rides. We are experimenting to see what works best for him. So far, we know that he loves the windows down when in town, he likes to snuggle with the driver, and he will lay down in the car when told.
We live on a lake, so we tried to see what Cubby thought of the water. At first he was unsure, then he started to bite at the waves. He really enjoyed walking on the dock to check out all the waves. When I threw his toy a few feet into the water, he would go in to retrieve it.
He is not showing signs that he will be a swimmer, but he did like the boat ride and loved looking at all of the sites. Isn’t he so cute in this picture?
For most of the last two years, Cubby has stayed at home with someone during the day. This week, we are weening him to staying alone with our dogs. We will see if he needs a kennel. He was not a fan of the wired one, so we are trying a plastic crate.
We are taking time for him to get used to it and he will go lay in the open half for a bit, but his preference is to sleep by my feet or on the couch. This picture is so cute, it’s like he fell asleep trying to get his ball.

Cubby recently changed foster homes and he now lives in the country outside of the Detroit Lakes/Perham area. He has quickly adjusted to living in our home. As with any change, the first day or so is more stressful.
Cubby is a super sweet dog and looking for love and attention from his people. For some time now, Cubby has taken a pill a day for his anxiety to help him be calmer. This is a low-cost drug, which he takes in the morning.
He is a very smart dog and knows many commands like "sit" and "down." We are working on "stay"; he tends to move from space to space often.
In terms of his energy level, he has done well with several short walks a day, time to play fetch or chase our dogs and then he comes back inside and takes a nap. He is 7 1/2 now, so still has good energy, but he does not act like a 2-year-old all day long!
Cubby takes treats very nicely. He loves his ball and will be found chasing it, chomping on it or looking for it to be thrown to him. We have been home with him this first week and he has napped during the work day or when our house is quiet. He is so cute that I have woken him up, so he comes to me for more petting and snuggling.
What will a successful home for Cubby entail?
Someone who is going to help him with good behaviors and how to be a good dog. People to walk him a couple of times a day or play fetch. A fenced yard would be great, so he can run more. We have been leash walking him for his potty breaks 4-5 times a day and he walks fine on the leash. We suggest it is a quiet, country home with little to no interaction with children.
Cubby reacts to noises outside, like barking dogs. Cubby loves his humans. He has a history of being attacked at a dog park, so he needs time and slow interactions when meeting new dogs. A home with 1-2 dogs that are confident and can teach him what it means to be a good dog, how to initiate play and to know he is safe would be ideal. He is learning lessons from our dogs after a short time.
As we learn more, we will update with Cubby stories.

Life here is good, but I'd love to have a human to call my very own (hint!).

Cubby is a 6.5 year old Golden mix. Cubby is house trained, likes his crate and gets along well with his foster brother, Ignatius. He enjoys the outdoor life, currently living on a farm in southwestern Minnesota.
Cubby does have some fear of strange dogs. He was attacked at a dog park and now is very aware that not all dogs want to be his friend. Cubby is an athletic dog who will jump a four foot fence with ease. He does not want to run away, he just wants to be where his people are. Another Cubby trait is that he enjoys showering with his foster!
Cubby is pretty good at sharing his toys with his foster brother. With people, he will trade for a treat. Cubby needs practice walking on a leash, as he is a country boy and does not spend a lot of time leash walking.
Cubby has always been a dog who needs to be moving. He has had some anxiety, so his foster and the RAGOM vet decided to give him a low dose of Fluoxetine, which is helping his anxiety. He can often be found with a ball in his mouth, another tool he uses to feel calmer. Cubby enjoys riding in the car and will wait patiently while his foster runs errands.
Cubby is looking for an adopter who will help him polish his positive traits and minimize some areas that need improvement. A condition for Cubby's adoption will be a commitment to enroll Cubby in a basic obedience class. He has a lot of love to give, and is a lot of fun with his goofy, quirky, athletic personality. He will need patience and time to feel secure in his new home.
