Dear RAGOM,

On November 5th, Dakota lost his battle to cancer. We want to thank RAGOM for rescuing Dakota back in 2011 and allowing my husband, Paul, and I to adopt him.

The first thing you noticed about Dakota was how beautiful he was! He was a very “polite” dog who was a joy to have in the house. He never would steal food from the counter or table, rummage in the garbage, or chew things. He did have a couple of bad habits, but after all, who doesn’t!

He became a part of our family immediately. He loved to go for walks and would remind us if we forgot. He also liked to watch the squirrels, chasing them whenever he could! Dakota loved to go for rides in the car, looking out the window the entire time.

He slowed down the last year, sometimes going to bed before us. We wouldn’t know where he was and, after searching, would find him in our bedroom sleeping on his bed. He was a great dog that was full of personality. He loved everyone he met. We loved him and will miss him.

Hi from Dakota.

I got to go with Foster Mom, Foster Dad, and Foster Brother Jackson to Missouri for the past few days to meet little people called the wonderful grandkids. Foster Mom said I was such a good boy. They hadn't seen that I like little toddler people as much as I like big people, and little Jolene loved giving us treats (she gives lots of them), so I remembered to take them gently.Jack and I loved playing in their big fenced-in yard and we especially liked that fetch game. Foster Mom told me that some people are coming to meet me in a few days and hopefully I'll get to go to my forever home.

This is Foster Mom now, and after spending eleven days with Dakota, I can tell you that he is a good boy, walks so nicely on a leash, and sleeps all night by the side of the bed. Being on a tie-out is still not on his favorites lists. He does like that air conditioning.

I think if Dakota had morning and evening walks, he would be totally satisfied in the exercise department. He does love to play. He sometimes thinks he is the leader of the pack and occasionally has to be reminded that is Foster Mom's job.

There have been two wet potty accidents, but I think it is because the dogs play so hard and then drink a lot of water and get too busy to let me know that we need to go outside. I would have a boundary room (our family room, no accidents) until I knew for sure he understood the rules of the house.

Dakota is a beauty and a wonderful companion. He would always keep you safe from those troublesome squirrels and rabbits. He could put on a few pounds; he loves treats, but not totally food-motivated.

As Dakota mentioned, we have some wonderful people coming to meet him, and I hope he can find the people he needs to spend the rest of his life.

Meet Dakota. Dakota is a 5 year-old, purbred, 66-pound, light-colored Golden. Think beautiful, happy-go-lucky, energetic, protector, nap buddy, all-around great pal, and that's Dakota in a nutshell.

Dakota was picked up as a stray in northern Minnesota, and after spending more than a month in a shelter, he traveled over 500 miles to hang out with his new foster mom, foster dad, and foster brother, 7-month-old Golden named Jack. It's only been a few days, but so far, every person and every dog that Dakota's met just happens to be his new best friend.

He loves to play, walks super nicely on his leash, shares his food and toys, does not counter-surf, deos not jump on furniture, and does not chew inappropriately. He takes his job of keeping the yard free of those pesky squirrels and rabbits very seriously, and if he sees one on his walk, he forgets his walking manners and you need to hold on tight.

He has not been cat-tested yet. We're not sure if he has been put on a tie-out before, as he is not thrilled with it.

Dakota has free roam of the house during the day, and at night, he sleeps quietly in the baby-gated laundry room. The first night home, we had a loud thunderstorm and we did spend some time in the basement with Dakota plastered to my side. He did settle down and sleep, but also had an accident that first night, but has had none since.

A visit to the vet and he is up to date on shots, microchipped, already neutered, on Frontline, and has been wormed. After being a stray and sheltered, he came quite dirty, but was a very good boy for his outdoor hose bath and enjoyed being brushed.

As you can see in the after-bath photo, he does need more brushing and a more nutritious diet to get him to be as beautiful as he truly can be.

Dakota can go to a home with other dogs (he does like to play and probably would need some training as he does want to dominate), but really would be a wonderful as an only dog. Children over ten would probably be best because of his rambunctious play.

So, if you want a walking or jogging buddy, or a couch sidekick, somebody that loves to fetch and talk that puppy-dog talk to you at playtime; Dakota is your boy!
