A big RAGOM welcome to Dakota! He is quite a sweetheart. He lived with one owner for his first seven years and was surrendered to a shelter due to a lack of time for a dog and then came to RAGOM. Here’s what we know about him so far:

  • 7-year-old Golden Retriever
  • neutered
  • housebroken
  • HW (heartworm) negative
  • good with other dogs
  • walks nicely on a leash
  • weighs 108 lbs
  • likes squeaky soft toys

Information sent with Dakota said that he’s great with kids, and that other than being neutered, he had not been to the vet and it is noted he is afraid of guns.

In his first week here, he’s sniffed at the table and countertop (they’re at his nose level) but no counter surfing. He’ll walk 30-40 minutes (some of the time at ‘heel’), then he enjoys a good nap. Dakota is eating green beans with his dog food to help him lose weight! He’ll need to continue daily exercise and controlled amounts of quality food to help him get to a healthy weight. He’s had a cough/wheeze also, so we started antibiotics today and will follow up with the vet in another 1-2 weeks. Let your placement advisor know if you’re interested in Dakota.

Dakota found his furever home with the “L” family, and luckily for us, his home is nearby. He now has a Mom, a Dad and an extended family from toddler age to young adult to give him lots of love!

Dakota loves the snow – rolling, running or walking in it, and eating it! He likes to take a toy outside to play with and brings it back inside with him. The larger, soft, squeaky balls are his favorite and he feels no need to de-squeak them. It’s just smaller, flat toys that suffer that fate.

He visited the vet last week. There were no signs of enlarged esophagus on X-ray. He’s had no ‘spit-ups’ of water since starting Sucralfate and will be on that med for a month. No seizures! Put him on the scale yesterday and it was like watching Biggest Loser… 99.9…100…99.9…100. OK, he’s 100 lbs, soon leaving the triple digits behind!

“Mr. Sociable” loved the Meet and Greet at the Coon Rapids PetCo last Saturday. He took “meet and greet” seriously and I think met everyone who attended, some more than once! He l-o-v-e-s to meet all 2 leggers and isn’t shy.

Dakota is very people-oriented and has good recall. He doesn’t need a fence, but would likely walk away to meet any person he sees. He gets along well with the other dogs. It’s obvious he was allowed on furniture in his former home, that’s one request we have of his furever home.

Dakota’s loving the life of a RAGOM dog. He wants to meet everyone he sees and makes friends everywhere he goes. He met our ‘grand-dogs’ and played well for a short time, then rested, then played again. He gets along great with our little resident dog. Soft toys are his favorite, though he has de-squeaked several after a while and once chewed a piece off a tennis ball (didn’t eat any pieces/squeaker/stuffing). We’re controlling access to soft toys and put them away when we’re gone. Recently, while a guest was here, he brought out all the soft toys, one at a time, to show the guest!

We continue to watch him health-wise. The antibiotics and trial of Pepcid are done. No more episodes of working to breathe/wheezing since the 3rd day of antibiotics. Dakota’s information from his SO (surrendering owner) said “he may have had a seizure once but had no vet follow-up”. On his initial vet visit, we were asked to watch for any signs of seizure with this ‘possible/not known for sure’ history. Dakota did have a seizure here one week ago. He was quiet for about an hour after, then back to his usual self. Blood tests the next day were normal. Urine was diluted (he’d been drinking a lot of water after the seizure). He vomited water (no food) that day and the next, so we restarted the Pepcid as advised by the vet. He saw the vet yesterday for a follow-up. He’s not had another seizure. No plans for medication now, but meds would be considered if he has more seizures. And – he was down to 103 lbs!

Dakota’s looking for his forever family who will help him find his svelte physique again and welcome him on the furniture. He’s got lots of love to give and loves to soak up attention.
