Dallas 05-261

Profile

9/6/05: Dallas arrived at our home last evening. He is a skinny, scared little guy. He rode well in the car and was glad to see the resident dog, Mike. He was reluctant to eat at first, but ate well once he realized he was safe. He laid under the kitchen table while we ate, and didn't beg. He's seen so much in the last few days that he seems a little overwhelmed. Dallas doesn't know his name yet. He was a stray and so thin and dehydrated when they found him, they had to give him an IV to get some fluids in him. He is very sweet, but not very interested in people or treats. We'll get some liver snacks to see if that perks his interest. This morning after breakfast on our second walk, he actually got frisky and played keep away with Mike and the best stick in the whole world. He proceeded to lay down and chew the bark off in the grass. Then he rolled and rolled in the grass. He decided today he really does like peanut butter (not interested last evening). He needs to settle in before we start working on simple commands. He appears to have been yelled at or beaten, as he has rolled on his back or cowered when I raised my voice. This boy is a beautiful diamond in the rough. We've scheduled his neuter for Wednesday, and by this weekend he will be available for adoption. He is painfully thin and we need to work on his muscle tone, too. We'll give this guy a lot of loving, security and some structure so he can come out of his shell.

Dear RAGOM,

Ten and a half years ago I fell in love with this adorable face on your website, and we adopted a year old golden retriever named Dallas.

Like many rescue dogs he had his share of issues. I can only imagine what his first year was like before he came to RAGOM. We realized some monster must have abused him, as anytime my husband or the kids would grab a baseball bat or golf club Dallas would run and hide under the car for protection. His anxiety was off the charts resulting (in hindsight), of some hilarious tales of destruction. I had a dog trainer tell me once that he was "just plain naughty"(and yes, I paid for that very scientific and helpful evaluation!).

There were a lot of laughs and a lot of tears in those early years, but I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Eventually Dallas learned to trust us. He realized this was his home, and he wasn't going anywhere no matter what kind of crazy shenanigans he pulled. He rewarded our patience with him by growing into one of the best dogs ever. He became a trusting and gentle family dog, and the most loyal, loving pal I could ever ask for.

Thank you RAGOM, for all you do for these sweet, beautiful dogs. Dallas brought such joy and love to our home, and we are so grateful to have had him as part of our family. I know when we're ready to adopt another dog I'll be perusing your website looking for another goofy, (slightly neurotic) golden with a little extra "baggage".

Yours truly,

The R Family

Boy, has this guy come out of his shell! Dallas was neutered on Wednesday. When he got up on Thursday morning he felt so good he ran through the house in one of those bursts of energy that ended with sliding across the kitchen floor. Other than that exhibit, he's been a really mellow fellow in the house, napping nearby when we're home. Luckily for me, he's left his incision alone. We went for a two mile walk and he did great. He doesn't pull on the leash, but if he decides to stop and stare at something, he's hard to get moving again unless I call Mike. Then he wants to do what his buddy does. He met some neighbor dogs and is very submissive- no growling, just standing still, waiting to get sniffed. He's had free run of the house while we're gone and other than some inappropriate chewing (my fault for leaving the sheepskin on the couch) he's been great. No accidents- he is housetrained. At night he starts out sleeping on the bed for awhile but moves to stretch out on the floor on the dog quilt next to the bed. He is one lanky boy and needs the space.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Dallas already knows sit, down and wait. He also knows "uh-uh" to stop doing something wrong. We need to work on "come", but because he was a stray, he's still learning his new name. He has a great nose and will find the pocket with the treats in it. He's eating 4 and half cups of food a day and we are working on bringing his weight up from the 58 lbs he weighed on Wednesday. Outside, Dallas loves to go for walks. He wants to retrieve. He's very interested in the wildlife, but he's been on leash so hasn't had a chance to catch anything yet.

This boy is very sweet and ready to find his forever family. Dallas would like someone to throw the ball for him. If you have the time, contact placementatragom [dot] org.

Dallas was sound asleep under the kitchen table when I walked in the door. Ahh- contentment. But- I know I closed the closet door when I left because he had picked up a shoe upstairs before I left and I made sure he didn't have access to shoes when I left. One black dress shoe, one men's boat shoe and one running shoe were out on the kitchen floor. Intact, but moved from the closet. Then, the clucking chicken toy that was on its way to Goodwill had been removed from the kitchen table and was torn to shreds on the dog sheepskin. (This dog has good taste when it comes to destroying unwanted stuffed animals!) When I vaulted the baby gate I found my ankle-high sorrels had been removed from the front hallway and placed meticulously in front of the guest bedroom where the radio was playing. Hmmmm. Seems the little guy had a burst of foot fetish and wanderlust while I was at work today. Other than the unstuffed chicken, no harm to leather, shoestrings or soles.

Dallas learned about swimming tonight. He's not an avid swimmer but enjoyed rolling in the sand and eating some that got caught in his jowls. He knows sit and lay down for feta cheese. He wanted to help himself to the dog food bag since it was at nose height once the laundry room door was opened, but he's distractable and moved to the dish when he got his evening ration of 3 cups put in. He's more active and more puppyish than this morning and tonight he stole the peanut butter knife off the kitchen sink. He's decided Kongs are good. Mike's Kong is the best. Luckily, they are both willing to share, so no competition there.

Dallas is wagging his tail tonight and actually seeking out some loving and pets. He has spurts of energy and periods of falling sound asleep for 15 minutes. He's acting more and more like a typical puppy and coming out of his shell. Yaaay for Dallas! This guy is going to make a great playmate for an active family, a running buddy or second furkid for some lucky family. He will need lots of exercise and some consistent obedience training. He truly is a gem.
