Bushido (boo she doe) has arrived. He was given this name as its origin is for 'the code of the Japanese Samurai'. This boy has been starved, ignored, and kept locked in a garage, yet he has survived, he is a warrior. Bushido was a stray, impounded, owners found, owners surrendered. Fate was finally kind to this poor boy. He is now on his way to a Golden life and being a RAGOM boy forever. He is about 3 years old.

The pictures will not show you how thin he really is. He weighs 55 lbs and should weigh between 70 and 75 lbs!! He has a sore on his left rear leg, his eyelids are inflamed, and his temperature is 104 (101 is normal). The mats were HUGE. Dr. Jennifer did the trimming and shaving herself. She saved just a small sampling of what was on Bushido's back side, under his tail and his feathering. The mats were so bad they kept all the yucky stuff sticking to his skin and his poor bum was bright red when they went to take his temperature. His nails were almost 3/4" long and his pads worn funny from not being able to walk correctly. I can't imagine the pain this boy was in. Yet from the time I met him, through his trimming and bathing, his tail never stopped wagging. He is sweet and handsome and can't hardly hold still as it is ALL a new world for him. I'm so grateful my friend at the Humane Society gave the pet hospital my name and number. Thanks, Vicki.

Bushido will be getting all the medical attention for the mentioned ailments. Due to his high temperature Dr. Jennifer put off giving the shots. I will take it in the morning and hopefully it will be normal and we can proceed. Meanwhile, while he has diarrhea he will take meds for that, be fed 3 times a day, 1 cup at a time. From there we will eventually add more for a few days at a time until we can get him on a regular amount and feeding schedule. Even though he must be starved, when I fed him tonight he would grab a mouthful of food and chew while pacing around. Needless to say, a bit of the food found its way to the floor. For treats I have been giving him some TD dog food and he thinks it's great. Because of the temp and not being able to give him his shots, he must be separated from resident Jake and foster brother Ranger 07-237. As much as I hated to do it, I put him in the big Mastiff size crate for the night. He has settled in and hopefully we will have good news tomorrow so he can join the crew.

Either Bushido hasn't ever seen a cat or he really likes to give chase. He met up with Coulter and immediately gave chase. Good old Coulter is always so trusting, but can run when needed. We will see how the cat situation plays out.

He almost seems housebroken as we have had no accidents thus far. He has not marked anywhere and I took him on a tour of the house. Am guessing maybe they let him out of the garage to potty and that was it. From now on he will be free to go outside to potty, but also to feel the breeze in his coat, smell the smells of the yard, play ball, play with Ranger, go for walks, explore the field and sun himself on the deck. Inside while we are home he will be part of the family and lay on the couch and cuddle, chew bones, chase the ball, figure out what all these new sounds and 'things' are and learn about being loved.

The really good news out of all this is that he is negative for heartworm and Lymes. While he had a bath at the vet, I gave him 2 more tonight. The smell was nauseating to say the least. The house reeked and so in we went for a nice warm oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. He still smells, but much better. Sunday I will bathe him again. The vet said when his coat comes back it will be beautiful.

I did have the vet's office take some "before" pictures of Bushido and will send them on when they get them to me. Meanwhile, keep Bushido in your thoughts and your 'paws' crossed for more good news.

This is from the former Bushido's (now known as Darwin) mom.  He loves his perch:)

Darwin loves the bay window!  As you can tell!  LOL!  He is looking up the street, watching the cars on Parish, though... and when he goes outside he runs that fence line between our yard and the yard of the people on the corner at Parish, and barks maniacally!  Guess I have a new behavior issue to tackle!  He was better yesterday, though.  Such a LOVE!

Hi, it's me 'Darwin' (formerly Bushido). Since I have a new name I guess you know it means I have a new family!! Yep, I have been officially adopted. I got my new name cuz it means 'beloved friend', and that's what I'm gonna be to my 3, yep three, new fur brothers, Sprocket the GR and Ozark and Brody the Pyrenees. You should see how little I look next to my new Pyr brothers. I will be sending in some updated pics with me and my family soon, but was so excited to share my news I couldn't wait. I do have one of me playing tug with my oldest brother, Sprocket. He's more my size and I'm slowly warming up to my other 2 brothers.

Meanwhile I have awesome new parents, Lori and Tom. I even got to go to work with mom on Friday cuz she manages a vet clinic. Know what that means? Yep, I'll always have a great vet to go to with mom. You know my new mom and dad weren't even looking for a new kid, but my mom used to be with RAGOM and keeps up with the site. Well, she saw my picture and that was pretty much it. Guess it was meant to be.

I hear Ranger 07-237, my old foster brother, misses playing with me, but hey I'm happy to be in my forever home to celebrate the Holidays with my very own family. Wow, going from being a dirty, stinky, matted and unwanted boy to all this, now I know what my foster mom meant when she told me I was a RAGOM boy and would have a great life from now on. I'm so there!!

Thank you to Carolyn for sponsoring me. I got all my shots and the 'snip' job so I don't add to the over population of pups out there. And now I'm HOME. Home sweet home.

So Happy Holidays to everyone and I sure hope more of my RAGOM brothers and sisters find their forever homes to celebrate the holiday season with. There's no place like home, there just isn't.

Love Darwin aka Bushido
P.S....thanks Linda M:)

I would like to thank Carolyn Bailey for her sponsorship for Bushido. If you were here Bushido would put his front paws in your lap, tuck his head into you and just stand and be loved up all the while giving off vibes of love and appreciation. Thank you so much for your help. Bushido was neutered yesterday and is doing fine. However his tail has become infected and he is now on antibiotics. It is seldom that the tail is so matted we have to trim right down to the skin, but with him it was necessary. You will be able to see just how bad it was by the pictures below. So sad and so painful for him. He is on his way to recovery and we can't thank you enough for your generous help.

All the pictures are of Bushido's back side. The matting in the tail, under the tail, the feathering on his back legs were so matted he couldn't lift his leg to potty. His tail gets so much action wagging out of sheer joy, that it just isn't able to heal with all that work out. The last picture here is of his nails. If you look closely you will see this white arch....that is his nail. Can you imagine walking on those, how painful it was? No wonder his paws are worn funny. But through it all he has been a trouper and nary a nasty word or action from him.

I am also including a couple of happy pictures. I temp fostered a pitt bull mix puppy. He was a joy and played and wore both Bushido and Ranger 07-237 out, which isn't an easy job. But Bushido took the new comer in stride and enjoyed all the play time. A couple days later I transported the puppy and picked up a blind lab and 2 puppies. Bushido was fine with the new comers and almost afraid of the busy puppies. But as always he's fine with all new comers.

When I went to see him at the vet yesterday after his surgery he was lively as always. I took him out of his cage and he looked up and realized there was a cat right above him and one over a cage. That was it for him. He became centered on the cats and could have cared less that I was there. He didn't bark or carry on, but he wanted to keep checking them out. Needless to say we went outside for a potty break.

When I went to get Bushido today he was back in the boarding kennels. They needed the big cage for a mastiff. I walked back and there he stood looking so sad and forlorn, like he had been locked up and forgotten. He just broke my heart. He so loves his humans and being with people and so friendly with the other dogs, it just did him in to have to be there. I could never bring myself to have to kennel him, no matter how good the boarding place was. He was ready, willing and able to go home. He was so excited to see Ranger and Jake and of course to eat. It's always like it's his last meal, but then when you've been starved it will probably take him a while to understand he will never go hungry again. He is up and about and wanting to play with Ranger. I forgot to close the door to the lower level and couldn't figure out where Bushido was after eating. Yep, checking out the cat door. Thankfully I had the door to the cat room closed. Whew. So later tonight I opened the door and let him go down. He did his intitial sniffing and trying to crawl through the cat door, and now is ignoring it. As long the cats don't come out, we're in good shape.

He still isn't gaining any weight per se and it will take a while. But meanwhile we keep on with the 3 meals a day and hopefully now after surgery he will be a little bit more mellow for a day or two.....yeah right:)

So if you think this handsome, if skinny boy would fit into your life and you have love, love and more love to give, can help him to gain his weight back and show him the ropes by taking him to obedience class, well let us know. Please contact placementatragom [dot] org

I am happy to report Bushido is doing well, very well. He is eating 6 cups of food a day and taking Vitamin E. I think given the chance he would eat 12 cups a day:) It's amazing to watch these fosters come in and see how they progress in such a short time. We are having trouble getting the Before pictures of him from the vet. But when/if we succeed, I'll be sure to share them.

Bushido will be neutered on Tuesday the 13th, but is ready, willing and able to meet prospective forever families. I am happy to report the following:

Bushido.............

  • Loves to play with other dogs
  • Plays tug with Ranger
  • Retrieves and gives tennis balls
  • Is house trained
  • Knows how to sit (the down is work in progress)
  • He slept in the bedroom last night for the first time. No accidents, chewing etc. He did choose to sleep on the floor
  • He was left with Ranger 07-237 and resident Jake with free roam in the house today
  • Yesterday was a long day being crated, almost 8 1/2 hours, no accidents won him bedroom and free roam rights
  • He is a lover and loves his people.
  • He's smart and will do very well in obedience, which is a MUST.
  • He is learning counter surfing and begging at the table is a NO NO!!

The only not positive about Samurai Bushido is CATS. I don't know if he has a small prey drive or just doesn't know what they are, but he will chase them, corner them and bark. Both my boyz are declawed so no defense. One night TM (the man/hubby) had him on lead and I held Coulter the Cat. Bushido sniffed and sniffed while poor Coulter hissed a bit. He didn't lunge for Coulter, yet not sure what he really thinks about the cats. So at this point our boyz are in the bottom 2 rooms of the house. At night when we go to bed I open the doors up and give them free reign. I had hopes that like Jake, in time and with a few no's Bushido would give it up. Not happening. If I let him in the lower level he just paces and sniffs looking for the cats, so now I won't let him down there, especially since he tries to crawl through the cat door. He's skinny enough he makes me nervous. He is high energy when it comes to looking for the cats and at night will pace and sniff. I think/wonder if he would be calmer in a house with no cats.

This young man was loved and cared for at some point in his life since he's microchipped, house trained, good in the crate (which we now can put behind us), knows to sit and listens fairly well when called to come/sit/no. How he ended up matted and living in a garage and running free, I don't know. But I am happy I got the call to meet him, grateful RAGOM said yes to him and just enjoying watching him come out of his shell.

Bushido will need to gain between 15 and 20 lbs to fill out his frame. He is a beautiful male, stocky legs, huge paws and that old time square face of a Golden. Outside of NO CATS, I think he would fit in pretty much anywhere. As for small children, I haven't seen him with them, so I can't say yes or no that. He craves attention and who can blame him. He loves to play with Ranger and Lake, though for some reason he seems to think Lake should be his 'girlfriend', which is getting old for all of us. The only time he has gently mouthed me is when I have to lift his poor sore tail to spray some yucky stuff on it to keep him from continually chewing at it as it heals.

So if you are looking for a handsome, blonde, not too tall, stocky boy who needs love, companionship, help gaining weight and obedience school, Bushido is the boy for you. He loves to ride in the van, but is still learning his place is in the back seat behind me, not in the passenger seat and or my lap. Contact us for a meet 'n greet at placementatragom [dot] org. His pictures just don't do his looks and personality justice, but then do they ever?
