Dehlie 12-400

Dehlie has been with us for almost 2 weeks now. She arrived the day before Christmas Eve after an all day trip up from Missouri and fit right in to our busy house. She is very well socialized and get along with all sized dogs and strangers do not bother her in the least. She will look for attention from whom ever is willing to give her some. Dehlie comes to us from an owner who raised her right. She is well-socialized to people and dogs. Having had two litters of puppies, she is lucky now to be able to retire from motherhood early. At six years of age, she is in her prime and ready to be someone's loving companion.

Dehlie does want all of the limelight and has gotten a bit snarky with our resident Golden Lacey when she thought Dehlie would like to play tug with a toy and Dehlie made it clear that was not the game for her. Although they are very willing to share the couch as you can see.

She seems to know some commands and we are working on reinforcing those good behaviors.

She has had little experiance with cars and needs encouragement getting into them.

Although Dehlie was an indoor/outdoor dog in her previous life, she is now learning to be an indoor-only dog in our home. We will say that she is pottytrained as we have not had an issue in the two weeks she has been here.

Dehlie likes to be where the people are and follows us around the house. We need to be carful with toys because she will distroy them and try to eat the spoils of her destruction.

I have no idea if she is cat freindly or not because we do not have one, we do have a 20 pound, little dog that she does not bother at all, but he has been around a lot of foster dogs in the last 5 years and holds his own.

Dehlie weights in at 80 pounds and the vet recomends 60-65 pounds for her frame size, so she will need daily exersize, she loves to run around our fenced yard and will fetch tennis balls.

What does Dehlie's ideal home look like? She does not need to live with another dog. She is good with kids over ten, we have not tested younger. And her forever family will need to commit to obediance training to channel her enegy and make her the best companion she can be.

Dehlie will be spayed on Tuesday, January 8 and will be ready to meet perspective families after that.

Hi Dehlie fans...

About a week ago, Dehlie & I were set to attend a RAGOM event at the Edina Chuck & Don's. Dehlie was in need of a bath and I put that off till the day before. Good plan as the morning before, Dehlie thought a vigorous roll upside down in the dirt was the thing to do. I decided to issue her a new collar also. Time for a lil change. Green must be her lucky color. When we arrived at the meet & greet their was someone waiting to meet her. We chatted a bit and he asked me if we would be staying till 2 PM as he wanted to run home a bring back more of his family to meet Del-Del. And that's just what happened. We met again officially @ their home a few days later and they wanted her to join their family.

Miss Delhie my former foster girl joined her forever family. She will call SW Minneapolis home with the H family. She will have a fenced yard, a Mom & Dad and two 2-legged Sisters. She will get daily walks again I'm sure she will enjoy. And the magic bone and a few more spare bones went with her. Resident dogs Zoey & Charlie knew something was up upon my return alone and a bag full of their dog toys was promptly poured onto the living room floor. Charlie was in toy overload and Dehlie can have all her toys out too in her new home w/o Charlie to contend with. Photos are of Dehlie's new lucky collar and of Dehlie in "her" yard with her brand new tennis ball her family got for her. Happy life, Dehlie Girl!

Hello Dehlie fans.

I had mentioned in a previous update that I noticed Dehlie had a special low gear when around elderly people. Well, I got a little more of a test than I planned. My Mother had a health crisis and was moved to a transitional care unit in a nursing facility. They have a wonderful policy on dog visits. I took advantage with resident dog Zoey, her favorite, for a visit. With my curiosity about how Dehlie would perform, I also paid a visit with my foster gal. Dehlie did a wonderful job. We took her first elevator ride, I suspect, but she paid no attention as a woman in a wheel chair was also a passenger on our ride. Dehlie simply sat next to the wheel chair just in case she wanted to pet her. Did wonderful with my mother also.

My normal schedule has been tilted since then. Many, many things need attention at the ol homestead. Visits and care conferences, oh and my work tends to need my attention too. From Dehlie's perspective, a completely lost weekend too. Walks have become a rare treat these days, I'm sad to say. We did get a little inappropriate chewing coming from Dehlie. I never liked that couch pillow anyway, and in the old days, the threat of getting your mouth washed out with soap was a good deterrent. Not with Dehlie, we now keep that outta reach. But she is hanging in there and has bonded with me, her temporary human. Magic bone still in play, though we may need a replacement as it's been getting hard use. She is still often the no-fun police with my dogs playing. But she does let um romp a bit now and then. The pack pecking order appears set and everybody is comfy together.

I have been negligent on running her over to the vet to toss her on the scale to see how her diet is coming along. But she appears faster in my backyard these days. Oh the 4th of July came and went. Dehlie's spin on it, no big deal with the fireworks. But if you set um off close by, that scolding "bark!" came from her. :-) If you have time in your busy life to provide Dehlie with a daily walk, she will love you forever. Just contact placement.

Dehlie, (pronounced like the place you buy a great sandwich "deli"), has been returned to Ragom's care after being adopted in February. Dehlie was living peacefully in a home with a Yorkshire Terrier and there were also two Yorkies next door. Without a fence, all dogs were allowed to interact outdoors. It sounds like the Yorkies would bark and run at Dehlie which she did not like. She had growled and snapped at them in the past. No doubt the Yorkies were playing and thought this was good fun. Dehlie did not agree. One day, Dehlie was tied out and the Yorkies came over doing the same routine. Unable to escape the Yorkies due to the tie out, Dehlie broke free and grabbed one. This little guy had recently had back surgery and sadly did not survive the encounter with Dehlie. So Dehlie was returned to Ragom. Because Dehlie was able to live peacefully with another little Yorkie, we do not believe that she is a threat to every little dog. She also lived with a smaller dog in her first foster home.

Dehlie came to us last Saturday after a stay in boarding until a foster home became available. She rides well in a car these days and jumped right in. She met the resident dogs in her foster home without issue and explored her new digs. After reading her bio above I removed all the toys and put them in storage. My resident Charlie is a little over the top with ownership of dog toys. He thinks they are all his and he can and will reclaim them at his will. My other resident dog Zoey just lets him have his way as she is not that much into toys these days.

Turns out I missed one bone that was pushed behind a piece of furniture. Dehlie got a paw in there and worked at until it slid out and she could chew it. So far this one bone is magic, as she and Charlie have both taken turns with it. As a test a second toy was deployed and that produced some snarky behavior as noted above and was put back into storage. That has to do as much or more with my resident Charlie as Dehlie.

Dehlie sleeps thru the night on a dog bed in my room along with the resident dogs. She is housebroken and leaves the people stuff alone. She eats in the kitchen with her new fur pals. As reported above Dehlie is on a diet these days and is doing well. She is down to 74 lbs. We have her on a grain free dog food and treats as she seems to have some allergies. Dehlie has had free run during the workdays and I have been coming home and letting the pack out for a mid day potty break so far. One thing I have noted is Dehlie does not like it when my dogs start wrestling. She steps in between them and gives them a dirty look. I have then decided to gate her or one of the residents apart so no play fests start. The problem is Dehlie is one of those don't fence me in kinda gals and is adept at taking out the gates. So gate respecting she is not. She did allow her pals to wrestle a bit twice today so perhaps her view is changing as she gets to know my dogs. Storms don't bother I was happy to find that out this weekend.

Still getting to know Dehlie but so far as as things I'm looking for in her adoptive home NO small dogs to be safe. I'm thinking I will extend that to no cats too. Dehlie was next to a caged cat today and was disinterested? Dehlie does have a prey drive and helped her foster sister Zoey run a rabbit out of the back yard the other night. A dog pal would be fine but she does not need one. She is very people oriented and that's her main focus. I'm also leaning towards a physical fence. I think I would skip the dog park too with Dehlie as there may be wayward small dogs. She meets larger dogs fine and attended a Ragom meeting and met two dozen new dogs wonderfully, but was more into getting pets from all the new people.

We attended Sunday's Ragom Meet & Greet event today at Chuck & Don's new store in Edina. Dehlie did wonderful with all the new dogs and people and got many pets, people were impressed with how calm she was for her age. After a visit to my elderly Mother last week and watching Dehlie be extra calm and gentle with my mother I wonder if she has what it takes to be a therapy dog? I don't know what the requirements are. More as we get to know "Dehlie".
