Dexter 07-592

Profile

Dexter came to us Sunday from Brainerd.  He was surrendered because he was a runner.  He is a 6 year-old, 60 pound neutered male.  He is red in color and extremely sweet and gentle.  He knows how to sit and shake, takes treats nicely, and is said to be house trained (we have not had an accident yet).  I gave him a bath yesterday, and he would collapse when I would scrub the area above his tail.  He absolutely loves to be scratched there!  He is incredibly sweet and likes to put his big head on my knee. We didn't have the heart to crate him last night, so we just baby-gated our dogs in the bedroom with us, and he did just fine.  He was a little anxious with the thunder last night, but soon settled down and slept.

He is a big puller on the leash, so we will try the Gentle Leader on him.  He is great with our kids, dogs and cats.  He rode well in the crate yesterday, and today I took him with me to pick my son up from school.  He rode just fine in the back seat.  He likes to destuff toy animals, is starting to chase balls, and LOVES to tug with a rope.  I am thinking that he might be a counter surfer, as when we have food out, his nose is straight up in the air, and he watches the food go from your plate to your mouth.

He has most of his shots, but will need to be micro chipped and checked out by the vet.  He also is sensitive around his ears, so he might have an infection.  His appointment is Wednesday afternoon.

So, this guy needs the following:

  • he would need a fence, since he is a runner (it might help with additional training so he'll stay even if the gate is open)
  • he does great with kids, cats and other dogs (although none of these are required!)
  • lots of love and care!

From Dexter's forever family...

We adopted Dexter in October of 2007. It stated in his bio that he was originally from Brainerd, that he was six years old, that his canine teeth were worn down from chewing on chain link fence, and that he was a runner.

He is now a city dog living in St. Paul, we have had two wonderful years of adventure with him so far, he has never been even close to a kennel since we adopted him, and has shown no signs of running anywhere. You may notice in the picture that he is off-leash. He spends the entire time at the cabin and farm off-leash and has never shown any signs of running. In fact, he hardly ever leaves my side and we are both happy to have it that way.

This photo is titled "Everything is Golden".

From the family whom Dexter now owns:

Dexter has moved right in and joined the family without a hitch.  He's a wonderful dog (as you said.."why would anyone give him up?"), and so eager to please. Sarah has already signed him up for a training class at Canine Coach so they can figure out each other's language. The only thing we fret over is whether we're getting his ears done right - but I'm sure it'll be ok. He goes to our vet tomorrow....so we'll see!

The first picture is of him with his squeaky possum..he carries it everywhere. The second picture is the classic regal golden pose in the backyard this weekend while we were raking.  (Feel free to post these in his dog-blog if you want).

Thanks so much for everything! We'll send more photos along the way!
