Dixie 08-112

Profile

Dixie has arrived (Thanks Joyce)!! What a sweetie she is! We are pretty bummed that we are only her temporary fosters as she is just cute as can be and fitting in great here after only a day with us. She will only be here with us through Sunday evening and then will move onto her permanent foster home.

Dixie is a 9 month old Golden Mix and was surrendered by a family who loved her but who just had too many animals to care for. Dixie has spent her entire life living outdoors in barns and garages so is just getting used to being an indoor dog. We have had one accident today but are going to chalk that up to the new situation, nerves, and the fact that she is just getting used to living indoors. She seems to be a bit timid - probably all the new sights and sounds of a house.

So far, I would say Dixie is a very mellow girl for only 9 months. She doesn't seem to like her kennel, but once inside is quiet and content to lay. She doesn't jump up on people but does enjoy sitting on the couch if allowed. She seems to be a bit nervous today, panting and pacing. But, after 40 minutes of running around chasing after the resident golden, Beckham, and a quick bath, she was out for the count on the living room floor for a good hour! I am sure she is just wondering what is going on - a lot has changed for this young girl in the last few days!!

She has gotten along beautifully with our rambunctious 3 year old golden and two kitties. She seems interested in the cats, but just looks at them while they walk by. Though very early to tell, I would say that she may need another dog in her forever home. She seems comforted by Beckham, the resident, and when in a new situation she is unsure of, she looks to him for guidance. This, of course, could easily change once she gets more comfortable living indoors. I am sure her permanent foster mom will have more insight on this matter after spending more time with her.

She hadn't really ever been on a leash or even had a collar on until yesterday so that is a whole new world for her. She is constantly itching at her collar and when taking walks on leash, she will stop and plant herself on the ground. If you pull, she pulls right back - in the opposite direction! But, if you bend down, give her some reassurance, and call her name (which she knows very well), she comes running, full force, towards you.

I know Dixie may not look like your typical Golden Retriever but you just have to meet this brindle girl with the Golden heart. She is all sweetness!! She gives little grunts when you rub the right spots and simply wants to be near her people. We will miss her when her permanent foster mom picks her up on Sunday, but are so happy that we have gotten to spend a few days with this little girl - She is going to make some lucky family very happy!!

Yesterday Dixi visited her new home. There were lots of kids and Dixi got a lot of hugs and kisses! The 7 year old girl even gave her this letter.

Ashley was very relieved that Dixi did not chase the cat.

They are all very excited to have Dixi come live with them. Dixi has surgery on March 27th, so after she feels a little better, she will go live with her new family, a mom, a dad, four kids, a cat, a snake, and a frog.

After 2 weeks with Dixie, I figured her true personality has emerged, and I can say she is such a sweet tender dog (all 47 lbs. of her!). She is a lady, and I hope that my resident dog, Lucy, picks up some of her ladylike behavior.

Example #1: When we go outside in the morning, resident dog plows through the side door, knocking anything and everything out of her way to get down the steps first and to the back yard. Dixie, however, stands and waits patiently for me to go down the side stairs first, then she follows, very gently and delicately.

Example #2: On walks, resident dog pulls so hard, a person would only believe she'd have the ability to pull a tractor. Dixie walks softly, gently you barely realize she's on the other end of the leash.

Dixie has, however, had one potty accident in the house. I'm trying to teach her the bell on the side door for when she has to go outside, but she hasn't gotten that quite yet. However, she's very smart, so it's a matter of time.
