To all the black "goldens"! From Patch 10-223

I'd like to introduce Dok. He is a 3 1/2 year old black lab golden retriever mix. He weighs 64 pounds. He has now been to the vet and is up-to-date on shots. He already was neutered and microchipped. He needs to have entropean surgery on one eye....which means his eyelashes turn in and rub on his eye....he's scheduled for Wednesday, August 29. He also has ear infections in both ears. We'll find out tomorrow about his fecal and heartworm test results.

He is jet black yet he has longer fur and more feathering than a purebred lab. He has a nice blocky lab head...but we know his father was a Golden Retriever.

He is a pretty typical lab mix...pretty rambunctious, yet not crazily rambunctious. He is a total sweetheart. He met the 5 other dogs here on his arrival with zero issues. We are now down to a more manageable 4 dogs here and he's actually pretty calm. He rode in the car well, although he would have been in the front seat if I hadn't restrained him to the back. He is easy to control and is an easy dog to have around. He is kennel trained and goes in easily. He is interested in the cat, but a little afraid of her....smart dog! He had a bath upon arrival and he was very tolerant.

He came late Sunday afternoon and it's been a work-week so he's not had a ton of time with me....but first impressions are that he's a keeper.

I will update later after I know him better.

Updates

Sunday, September 30, 2012

I just noticed that Dok is due for an update. I think I am so surprised he's still here that I spaced out the update stuff.

He continues to be a great foster. I'm almost hesitant for him to get adopted, because who knows what my next foster will be like.

Dok gets along with everyone and everything he meets. He isn't a big player with other dogs, but he does enjoy running around the yard with them. He could easily jump my four-foot fence, but hasn't. He likes to chase squirrels but they tend to taunt my dogs so that's not surprising. When my dogs wrestle in the house he stays away from them and never joins in.

He has obviously had lots of training in his past life. He comes when called, sits on command, goes down on command, and even stays when told. He walks nicely now, it took a little work. He wears a head harness and does great with it.

He's been to a couple of Ragom events and has done great. He's very calm and seems to enjoy the attention.

Dok had eyelid surgery on Wednesday to stop his eyelashes from rubbing on his eye. He has to wear a cone for 10 days. He came home the same day as the surgery. He was pretty pathetic last night but is back to his normal self today.

As you can see, his cone is already duck-taped together....good thing we have a couple more cones in a closet because I think he will be hard on them. Good thing we have lots of duck-tape too. So far, his eye looks great....way better than did before the surgery.

Dok continues to be an easy foster. He's easy to have around, he gets along with everyone, he knows basic obedience commands. Now that he knows our routine, when he knows we're leaving, he just goes and gets in his crate.

Both dogs know I have treats so they are waiting pretty patiently. I told
Dok to lay down and his foster brother joined in hoping for a treat too.
