Introducing Duke, he is a 7 year old golden who came from a breeder who has chosen to no longer breed.
Duke is now up to date on his vaccinations having been in for a vet visit last weekend. He was a very good boy with all the poking and prodding and all his tests were negative. Duke returned to the vet late this week to be neutered.
Duke was really in need of a bath and some brushing as he was living in a kennel in a barn. Now that we have him cleaned up a bit and most of the bigger mats cut out you can see he is a very handsome boy. Duke is 69 lbs and more blond than red. Duke is crate trained and go's in with out much fuss and will go in on his own once and a while to just take a nap. He would much rather follow me around and is content to just chill in what ever room I happen to be in.
Duke met the resident dogs in his foster home well. He really likes my Zoey he gives her a kiss every so often.
He is fine with my senior Golden Bailey who is 13 and blind. The first night Duke arrived we found out he had a good crop of wood ticks with him..So it was decided he would sleep in the kitchen crate. This was his first night away from all he knew and a strange new place, with new dogs and people. He was not having any of being alone and away from everybody and let us know. So we picked up Baileys dog bed and relocated her to the kitchen. Bailey at age 13 lives to sleep and plunked right down and fell asleep. Duke took the cue from her and we all got some much needed shut eye.
Duke was reported to be house trained and that is true, however he did mark twice when he first got here.
He has left all people stuff alone and most of the dog toys were put away when he arrived till we get to know him.
Duke is not a fan of loud thunder storms I found out the other day. He will stick to you like glue for some reassurance.
Oh I forgot to mention Duke also met my male resident dog Charlie well. However they did have some issues it may be from Duke being intact when he got here and Charlie being neutered. Or its everybody finding their place in the pack. They were ok for a few days before Duke went off to get fixed. Upon Dukes return Charlie gave him a loud over the top, welcome back . Duke was put off by this and gave growls in Charlie's direction. So for the time being I am keeping those two apart and see if they will patch things up. Duke,Charlie and I ,with Charlie on leash walked around the back yard this afternoon. From the backyard back into the house twice with a stop for treats both time. So it looks like they may be pals again.
As far as what Duke needs in a forever home besides love, I'm still not sure. He has not been cat tested or kid tested. I will see if I can meet some and see. Would he prefer a dog pal at this point? I would say yes, perhaps a female might be better, but he has met other male dog's with out issue and it looks like Charlie & Duke may be pals again. An hour ago I had to put a stop to Duke and Zoey starting to play for the first time. Duke you need a few more days to heal up. As to Fence /no fence etc. I will need more time to figure that out. We have gone on a few walks and he does not pull except if he see's one of those pesky squirrels. I did try him with a Gentle Leader and was amazed on how easy he tolerated that. More on what his needs are as I get to know him better. Duke is a very nice, calm & loving dog, and is so thank full for any kindness you show him. Stay tuned as we get to know him better.
