Duke 12-324

Profile

After a 12 hour car ride Bo Duke (Duke for short) arrived late Sunday night in Elk River, MN, where he is being fostered.  Duke had a lot of energy to burn after being cooped up in the car all day, which required a very long walk, to help burn some energy.  From there Duke hopped in the bathtub for a bath (he had been being kept outside with very little care, so you can just imagine what he smelled like) or should I say multi bath, as we had to shampoo and rinse twice and probably could have done it one more time.  However, Duke smells much better now and his fur is silky smooth.

Upon arriving in Elk River, Duke had the opportunity to meet his foster brothers Buddy (resident golden 2yrs old) and Gus (foster golden 4yrs old), at first the energy level Duke was exuding was way more than Gus was comfortable with so Gus gave off some grumbling letting Duke know to back off and even Buddy who can tolerate any dog, was a little overwhelmed.  But now a couple of days later they are all playing well together.   See pic below where all 3 are resting and played out, Duke laying against the door looking into the camera.

Duke is a 1 year old male GR weighing in at 66lbs.  He is under-weight, all of his ribs are very evident so we will be working to put some weight on this gorgeous young boy.  Duke is most definitely still a puppy and wants to play all the time.  He is learning to respect when both FB’s say enough is enough, but still a work in progress for Duke to understand appropriate dog behavior.

Prior to arriving in RAGOM Duke lived in a 4x4 cage outside.  He was never walked or exercised, never given any attention, and until a Good Samaritan started donating food, never fed on a regular basis.  However, the good news is, Duke does not exhibit any negative side effects from how he started his young life.  He is a happy, playful, medium energy puppy, who is so very thankful to be interacting with people and dogs alike.  And starting to learn what a regular meal time looks like.

Duke was neutered this past Monday, is UTD on his shots, micro-chipped, and on tick and heartworm preventative.  Duke’s coat is a beautiful golden red color.

Stay tuned for updates as we get to know this handsome young boy.If you think Duke might be the forever companion you have been looking for, please contact your placement advisor today.

Thank you to all of the wonderful people who came out to the PetSmart event last weekend to see Duke.  Duke is still learning his manners, so may have seemed out of control, but he thoroughly enjoyed all the extra petting he received.

Duke is settling in to our pack very nicely.  Below is a picture of Duke and FB ‘sharing’ chewing on a stick.  Duke and FB still play a lot but are not as incessant as they were in the beginning.  See picture below where Duke is resting “on” FB so he can be certain to know the minute FB gets up and may be ready to play again.  Duke is learning what “no” means but still has lapses in his memory.  Duke would greatly benefit from attending a formal obedience training class with his forever family.

Duke is making progress on getting up to his ideal weight, although may still not be certain regular meals will continue, as he does eat a bit fast and drools excessively in anticipation when we are making up their dinner bowls.  An outcome of this is Duke is a ‘belcher’, yes indeed, sounds like a grown man when he burps.   This will likely pass as he settles in more and we continue to work with him to eat a little bit slower.

Duke’s current exercise regime is biking with FD (foster Dad) and FB 2miles in the am and 2 miles in the evening, plus occasional walks and of course playing with FB.  As a young dog, Duke needs lots of regular exercise and playing.  Duke didn’t know what a tennis ball was when he first arrived but quickly caught on to just how much fun it is to run and get the ball, bring it back and then run and get it again.  Duke has become very enamored of his tennis ball and will sometimes be seen playing ball by himself by tossing the ball in the air and then running to get it wherever it lands.

Amazing, even to us, Duke came to us 100% housebroken, WOW, still amazes me, after knowing his having spent the last 7 months outside. In addition, Duke is only the 2nd of our foster’s to “ring the bell” to go outside.  We have bells hanging from the door we use to take the dogs outside and attempt to teach all how to use the bells to tell us when they need to go out.   After only a few days with us, Duke learned if he rings the bell a human will come along and let him out, very smart boy!

Duke has had free roam both at night and while we are away and has had zero issues.  He does seem to be inordinately attached to our resident golden, almost to the point of being attached like a barnacle.  Duke is relentless in wanting FB (foster brother) to play with him and when FB ‘tells’ him enough Duke will then seek out his humans for some love.  Duke seems to be recognizing the value of his humans more and more each day, when he comes for love, will stay just a little longer for petting, but then quickly has to go back and see what FB is doing and if FB is ready to play again.

Duke is making progress on learning manners both with dogs and humans, he is very smart so is catching on fairly quickly.  But there are times when he throws himself at you and doesn’t realize 60+ pounds can be a lot of dog.  He still thinks of himself as a small puppy just learning the world.

Duke does not seem to have any issues, no resource guarding, no anxieties of any kind, and would likely settle in to most any home just fine.  Although, with his still learning manners and being as big as he will get once he is up to his ideal weight, we are suggesting if there are children they be older teens.  Younger/smaller children would easily be knocked over by Duke’s exuberance and could be hurt.  Especially as he is very interested in any and all food and will launch himself at you, even over a table/desk to get the food, still has a ways to go, to understand his meals will keep coming on a regular basis and he doesn’t have to scrounge for food.
