Dusty 07-407

Profile

Let me introduce you to Dusty!  She is a 9 year old pure bred Golden Retriever with a St. Patrick’s Day birthday.  Dusty has a beautiful thick red coat, big brown eyes and a gorgeous smile.  She is owner surrendered from a family that had her since she was a puppy.  Dusty’s family is moving and cannot take her with them.  The lucky girl has now joined the RAGOM family of Goldens.

Dusty was into the vet this evening for the once over.  She handled the vet visit like it was a fun outing rather than a doctor’s visit.  Dr. Sven said that Dusty is a typical Golden Retriever.  She has ear infections (which he is aggressively treating), appears to have some minor skin allergies (antibiotics for those) and needs to lose about 10 pounds.  Diet and light exercise will help with that.  Dr. Sven noticed that Dusty favors her left rear leg.  His examination showed a possible old ACL injury that did not heal properly or maybe arthritis is setting in.  His thought shedding a few pounds would make Dusty more comfortable with that too.  There were good things too – Dusty’s teeth look good and her heart is very strong.  Her overall health is good.

Dusty has only been with us and our two dogs for 24 hours so we are still getting to know each other.  What we know so far is Dusty rides perfectly in the car, she takes treats very gently, she knows basic commands (sit, come, down) and loves Mc Donald hamburgers (reward for vet visit).  Foster Dad gave Dusty a bath today.  She’s very fluffy now and loves being called a pretty girl.  She certainly is that.

I thought I would write and let everyone know how Ms. Dusty Rose is doing. We feel like we are becoming a broken record about Dusty, she is such a wonderful dog and she is so much fun.  I finally got some new pictures of her, one is with her playing with our neighbor dog Lola.  They have this game, Lola will chase the tennis ball and then Dusty will chase Lola and try to cut her off.  They are so much fun to watch. (I'll send the pictures real soon I promise)   Dusty has settled in really well at our house and has us trained well as her foster parents.  She does not get on the furniture unless invited and then she does not stay up there very long, usually just a few minutes.  She lets us know when she needs to go out to go potty and she gets really excited when she sees the leash and the harness.  Dusty LOVES walks but she is a puller if the leash is attached to her collar, we have been using the harness and she does wonderful with it on.  I would consider a harness a great tool for Dusty when walking her.  She went with me on a visit and played with another rescue dog and they wore themselves out.  Dusty is really laid back and loves people.  She lives for attention and really looks forward to playtime with other dogs.  She likes her little swimming pool and will get in to cool off and to drink water, especially after she has play time.  With all the storms that we had last weekend she did really well, we were told she had some storm anxiety. She did go to her safe spot and kept me in her sights at all time.  She handled the storms and all the thunder and lightening just awesome.  I was not sure what to expect, no pacing or shaking to anything like that, What a trooper!!  Dusty has been going with me in the car and just hangs out with me in the evenings.  She just takes everything in stride.  Foster dad mentioned last night that she has not been going into her crate/kennel and that she has found her comfortable spots in the living room.
