3/20/06: Here is a story about Emma girl. On Saturday, March 18, 2006, we happened upon her while driving around with our 14 month old granddaughter, Lauren, and decided to check out a new rescue facility which just opened up a week or so ago called Second Chance Rescue, just 10 miles maybe out of Sioux Falls, SD. Not long after we entered, I saw this Golden sitting in this small kennel with her sad eyes and a tail waggin?! Well, could not have that! We checked her out and got some photos of her there. Gosh, what a wonderful girl. We of course asked about how she happened to be in their rescue facility. She was a stray, found about 3 weeks or more ago about 30 miles south of Sioux Falls. They did all the proper notification and no one came forward. So she stayed at their new rescue facility which is just getting off the ground. She was in a small kennel, 6 X 6 maybe. Clean etc. and ever so lonesome of course! I of course decided the next day we would go save her. I talked with the owner, told her about Ragom, and here she is! The rescue place did waive her fees - very glad to hear about Ragom and this beautiful girl had a place to go!!

Upon our first meeting, we could see her right eye was not normal and infected or blind or?.. The facility was pretty sure she was blind in it, and she was on antibiotic drops. A staff member had just groomed her the day before due to a ton of burrs and other things in her fur from being out in the elements. So here we see a baby, beautiful, and about 6-7 years old. The decision was made, Ragom contacted and now she is with our family! We brought her back to our home yesterday. She fit in perfect with the other six pack (10 yr old Golden, 11 yr old Pembroke Corgi, 4 year old Border Collie/Eski mix and 3 cats (all rescued of course too). Happy family!

Ragom has named her Emma. Emma has an unknown diet so she is on Solid Gold which the rest of the crew is on. She is very hungry but not really underweight. Really wants any food anytime, probably from being out on her own and trying to make it. We put another large doggie pillow in our bedroom last night, and she slept in there with us and the rest of the crew! She does not bark, no accidents at all, wants to try and play with the others. She follows all of the other ones outside and is good to sit at the door. I believe she has been ?shut out? or something because she is afraid to be left for long. Loves the fenced in yard and eyeballs the squirrels too!

I do believe the progress of eye loss is hard for her?and we too need to be more aware of this blindness in her right eye and proceed from there. She is not in any pain that we can see or discomfort. We are putting in antibiotic drops in 1-2X day. She is a gorgeous blonde as you can see. She is about 70#. Very nice coat; wonderful perfect teeth; spayed and now today, current on everything. Little gassy thing going on, however, who knows what diet we have been on or where we have been for the past 2 months or more?

Emma is just a lovely, well behaved girl! She is a very typical Golden, wants to be petted all the time, be next to someone?gets along with anyone and all else! Other than getting her eye corrected which the doctor thought was probably from a trauma, there is small scar and cut above the same eye and a bump on back of her ear which we are guessing, is all from the same trauma (hit, accident, dog attack), just do not know. Sure did not affect her personality! We are very happy to foster this girl! I have not had a chance to really walk her yet due to weather, work and vet appt., etc. however, so far on collar and leash she is fine, pulls a little due to fear in my opinion. I think she thinks something ?not so good? may happen. She was not sure how to go up and down our carpeted steps to the bedroom. Some of that has to be a vision impairment as well. She is getting it fine!

Emma is on Drontal, 1.5 tab today and 1.5 in two weeks for tapeworms. A little peanut butter and no problem! Tobramycin 1-2X in right eye to prevent infection, rabies, heartworm negative; all vaccinations current now. Shrinking eye and will probably need to be removed; lump behind right ear, unsure what it is, and will do more thorough evaluation at the time of her next re-check in one week. Not to trauma Emma anymore than we have to. Left eye hyperpigmented lens, but seems ok. All in all a good check up. Get eye issue taken care of, some rest, love, time, food, play, she will be a perfect Golden for just the right home. She is ever so pretty! Her teeth are perfect. All in all very good. I am glad she is sleeping on my feet now and not in that dark, cold dreary kennel! Gotta love Emma! Just a wonderful, kind beautiful girl! Vet fell in love too!

Here are some pictures of Emma in her new home the day of the adoption. She is doing absolutely wonderful. She and her brother Redford, are a happy couple. Lori and Paul and rest of the family adore her. I love these happy endings and she is in the most perfect home anyone could ask for specifically for her. What a great ending to such horrible outrageous treatment of an animal! We love you to pieces Emma! With all our hearts!

Emma has been doing very, very well considering it has been a long week. First, we have had about 6” of rain total for the week and could not get out for our walks! Second, she finally had the eye removal on Thursday, April 6, 2006 here in Sioux Falls, SD. The shocker news was this: We knew the eye had to be removed, however there was also a lump behind her right ear as well. Came to discover at the time of surgery it was a bullet! She had to really have suffered for quite a while. The surgery took a long time due to major scar tissue and where the bullet was lodged, and careful removal with the optic nerves too. With pre-blood tests and all, she is very healthy. No other issues with Emma at all. She has come a long long way in survival! She deserves a wonderful home with someone who will understand and take all the information of removal of an eye and the care she needs!

Emma is a very happy, beautiful, warm, loving, great dog. We are thinking she is more 7-9 years old however instead of the 6 originally thought. Emma has a great appetite too! She gets 3 smaller servings a day to get over the tremendous need to feed yet. Emma is on Nutra Natural Choice for Seniors with glucosamine. She has only had a 3-4 accidents in the house due to post-surgery and possible weaker bladder. Emma will definitely need a fenced yard, as she loves to lay outside in the sun and watch (one-eyed) the world go by and smell the air! She needs someone understanding of her past and current condition. She has the best personality you could want! Beautiful blonde Golden, great coat, great teeth and just perfect…

We are very happy to foster this poor girl. She is, however, getting very attached here, especially with all the medical needs. There has been someone home most all the time. I only work 4 hrs a day and we also have a 19 year old who lives here as well (and works but mostly nights). Emma sleeps on a big doggie bed in our bedroom at night with the rest of our troops (3 dogs) and 3 cats. She does not care about cats at all. Great with kids (we have 4 grandkids). Is very good on a leash and harness. Perfectly fine with other dogs and cars. LOVES squirrels! She may only have one eye, but can spot them with no problem!

Emma is a wonderful dog and deserves a truly warm and wonderful home!

Emma is doing wonderful. She has been on more walks now. She walks very well. We use a harness. She prefers to walk on your RIGHT side and that was she can see you (her right eye is blind, so sees you out of her left eye. She has the Golden sway/wiggle of course! Holds her head up high and just loves to walk and walk. Absolutely perfect when meeting other dogs and people. She is fine riding in the pickup too. She even will jump up in the back end like she was used to that. (We of course, do not do that, they ride inside). So we are wondering if maybe on a farm type setting before? She loves just hanging out in our backyard (we have 6’ privacy fence) and sitting on the patio just checking out life. Will zone in on a squirrel though and chase up a tree! Does not chase birds but ‘watches’ them. Wants to bury a pig’s ear treat….get the nose nice and dirty! Emma listens very well. When she barks (neighbor dogs start to go nuts sometimes), or digging and I tell her stop, she does. I do not think she has lived with her blind eye for a long time however. She has some problems navigating if she is in a rush (say to get into the door, turn around fast, backing up). It is getting much better for her with time however.

She sleeps on a large doggie pillow at night, no stirring and no accidents. Will go to back door when she wants out. I do not think, however, she could go a real long time without potty break. I truly believe our dogs are training her by going out and she follows. We do a lot of praise when she does. We have “piddled” somewhat on kitchen floor, but not a squat or anything, just kind of there when she gets up. That has only happened a couple times….maybe the bladder a little affected from something but the control is good.

Emma does not pay attention to our cats…they can rub up against her and that is fine with her. Our grandchildren can do anything around her and I think she enjoys watching! I also think if there were a younger dog around, she would play more. My guys are sort of boring. She has gotten 100% better at going up and down the carpet steps. I am sure she (a) was not in a home or in a home with steps (b) an eye adjustment from some type of trauma a while back, don’t know how long ago. Emma is just a delight to foster. She, like all other Goldens, will wait and want to be petted ALL THE TIME if you can! She has a great coat. She is more blonde and not as curly of hair. I think in great shape. She acts hungry all the time I am assuming from fending for herself for how long. She will need to learn to be gentler when taking a treat. She wants to gobble, and you can’t blame her. We are working on that. Offer absolutely no human food. She does not ‘steal’ from anyone. I think however, if you left something on the counter within her nose and reach, it would be gone! Great nose. She is learning NOT to jump up on counter to sniff. Lots of praise when she eats her food and then goes outside.

I feel Emma is worried she will not get let back in. She is learning slowly that she is safe here and gets lots of love and kisses. She is still learning her name. She will however, take off and run if you let her. Loves to run and run! Emma is very active if you let her and give that opportunity. She really loved being walked down by the river, close to fields, etc. She would always have to be on a leash, in fenced yard, or doggie park. Again, she really likes it in the backyard, just hanging out. With one of our dogs or not. Soak up the rays (when we have them). She does enjoy grooming too. No problems there at all. A very nice coat! Does not mind being washed and cleaned off either. I think Emma could put a lot of weight on if you don’t watch her diet and exercise. Probably from fending on her own and being left. Really gobbles the food down. So I do smaller servings a little more often.

So she can go all night with no problems. She and the other troops are only left from 6:30 or 6:45 to 11:00 – 11:45 and I am home all afternoon. Emma had her second vet check today. She is 73#. Eye surgery is scheduled for next Thursday, April 6th in the morning. Emma has a lump behind her ear on the same side of affected eye. That will be tested and removed at the same time. She has no other physical injuries at all. No other lumps, scars, loss of hair or anything else. Emma is on Nutro Natural Choice for Senior dogs. It will be great when we have the surgery behind us and no worry for eye infection (she is still on drops to make sure of this). She is going to make someone a really wonderful companion….and will fit in most homes. I think obedience class would be fun with her as well and very beneficial, as she is so smart and willing!
