Emma (JemmaTeller 09-413)

Profile

Jemma arrived from Iowa this evening to her foster home in St. Cloud. What a beauty!

She did wonderfully in the car, napping most of the way on the last leg of her of transport from Iowa. Jemma, a one year old, had a great meet & greet with our two goldens. She was formerly living with 7 other dogs and 9 cats so we expect her to be a good team player.

Jemma likes the bathtub, presenting the challenge to get her out of the warm water. Lucky for us she only is 45 lbs. and does not mind being carried around. She slowly is exploring her new surroundings and quickly has settled into the home office for the night.

Jemma is off to the Vet on Monday for her first checkup. Her SO had no time to house train her or do much leash work at all so we'll be spending the next few weeks working on those skills!!!

We lost RD Emma (Jemma Teller, 09-413) in September. She was 12. She was just the sweetest thing and a bit of a diva, but she was our Emma Wrigley.

This was on her 12th birthday with her very own chicken (well some of it, anyway!).

Thanks,
Karla B.

Jemma Teller 09-413

We adopted Jemma Teller (now Emma Wrigley) on December 5th, 2009. She was painfully shy and hid under the foster family's kitchen table when we went to visit. It took some time, but instead of hiding when people come over to our house now, she greets them at the door. She seeks attention from others and loves playing ball or tug-of-war with her big golden sister, Bailey. It's hard to believe that she is the same dog now that we met 6 months ago.

Emma is such a joy to have in our lives and has brought Bailey back to life after losing our first golden, Brandy, last September. Our boys, 6 and 11, love her spunk and personality. She still has some shyness in public and would rather stay in the car than go inside Petco, but with baseball season underway, she gets to come along to some of Zach's games and I believe, will slowly get over her shyness. We are working on the social interaction outside the house and I know she'll get there in time.

Emma fits into our lives like she's always been here. She has a lot of traits that Brandy had and we feel very lucky to have found her when we did.

We want to thank RAGOM for taking care of all the 'big sweeties' and giving them a chance to let the real golden in these dogs come out.

Thanks for all you do,

The B Family

Hello Everyone!

Just wanted to let you know that Jemma is on her way back to Iowa and her adoption went well.  Her forever family is great and she will become a very happy puppy and a great companion for all!  We miss her already but are very excited about her future.

After two weeks with her foster family Jemma is doing wonderful.  We have made slow but great strides with her.  This week we have accomplished going out the sliding door to the upper deck on our own and laying out there with her foster sisters.  It was such a nice week we had to get outside!

We have also started to play tug-of-war with the other dogs. She has to fight pretty hard to hold on to her toy.  The competition is pretty tough around this house.  Her foster sisters like her a lot and have started to let her play with them.  It can get pretty crazy with three dogs chasing each other with toys in their mouths :)

We also conquered the stairs this week, inside the house and the deck stairs.  Now she goes so fast down them that I have to hold tight to slow her down.  We have not had an accident in the house all week, so far so good on the potty training.

We are still having some difficulty with walking on a leash.  She likes to stop  and wait for someone to tell her it's ok or that she is a good dog. Then she will walk for a short time more.  This is still a work in progress.  Just takes time and a little patience.

As you can see Jemma is a petite Golden weighing in at 45 lbs.  You can compare her to Keats on the left at 95 lbs and Argo on the right at 72 lbs.

Jemma has now been in foster care for 10 days and is slowly adapting to her new surroundings.   Jemma's SO indicated that she had a lot of energy, had no aggression or anxiety issues, did well with other animals and did well in the car.  Let's just say that's not what we have observed.

Jemma displays many of the behaviors of a puppy mill golden.  Her first trip to the vet went well.  She is somewhat lean but now eating regularly.  All in all her vet reports she is very healthy girl.  Car travel generates some anxiety leaving Jemma hunkered down during the ride.

We've seen no aggression from her at all and we'd say her temperament is very gentle.  Over the last 10 days she has moved out of her safe spots and begun to free roam the home.  Jemma can go up stairs but can not go down stairs.  She is still having some issues going from certain flooring to cement or from cement to black top or grass.  She shows anxiety to parked cars on walks and more anxiety to passing cars.  Lots of walks are in her future as she learns about the world.

Her best progress is coming from interacting with our other two 2 y/o Goldens.  She is picking up positive behaviors and confidence working within the pack and our family.  After 7 days her tail is beginning to pop up and play time is becoming much more interactive.   Jemma loves to retrieve.

Jemma's behavior with family members is good.  She comes when called by a family member and she shadows us when we move around the home.  Jemma jumps on the couch and now our bed. She is sleeping the entire night in our bed as well - with the other two dogs.  However, just today she would not approach another new person in our home - our RAGOM mentor.  Positive socialization and confidence building are a must for her.

We think Jemma will make a great addition to a quiet and calm home with another dog, a fenced yard, and a family who can invest the time and energy providing her with the positive reinforcement she needs to feel safe. She is working well with our teenage daughters but we would not recommend her for a home with small children.
