Profile

Freida came into RAGOM when her loving owner had to move into assisted living. Frieda is a beautiful, healthy girl. She is reactive to other dogs, so any children in the home should be age 13+. Freida must be the only pet in the home; she cannot live with other dogs or cats. Because of her high prey drive, she must have a physical fence. Freida needs a family who will manage her reactions to other animals and who will enjoy her loving, affectionate nature with her humans.

Freida continues to love her twice daily walks. She behaves well on a leash and sits nicely when asked. She will pounce on anything she sees moving in the weeds next to the dirt trail or road.

It could be a mouse, frog or any kind of insect. She even considers butterflies fair game. Her pounce almost reminds me more of a cat than a dog!

On her walks there are 4-5 dogs that she passes by fairly regularly. She now shows almost no reactivity to those dogs. Kudos to Freida for that major improvement!! If we pass a dog she doesn’t know, her behavior is mixed, as if it depends on whatever doggy vibe she gets.

Sometimes we can say "Let’s go!" and minimize the reaction, other times she may bark or pull. In our rural area there is always room to easily create more distance or change course.

Freida will be the most loving companion to her forever family! Walks can be managed by an older child or adult, as long as it is not in a setting where she is constantly having to pass by other dogs in close proximity. Please consider her for your home!

Freida absolutely loves being around her humans! Several people came over for dinner the other night and she was so happy to see each one. I know she was sure they came just to see her. Once we settled down to dinner, she laid down nearby and behaved perfectly.

When foster mom or dad comes home, that unconditional love shows through with requests for pets and belly rubs. Any adopter will be rewarded with the most loyal gal - her life definitely revolves around her people. It far outweighs her one quirk of being fearful of other dogs.

Freida continues to improve on not reacting to other dogs on walks. The key is making sure she is walked in more quiet areas.

These photos are of Freida busy at one of her favorite activities - watching live doggy TV, featuring squirrels and birds!

Freida continues to be a happy doggy soul enjoying life. She is becoming much less reactive towards other dogs on walks since the attack. I guess she just needed some time to forget.

Freida had a very humorous counter surfing event last week. We occasionally give her real marrow bones. She knows that she can enjoy them on a small blanket we spread out on the carpet. That particular day she was getting chips off the bone, so I let her outside and put it on the counter.

When she came back in, she immediately looked for it and her nose told her where it was. She laid on the kitchen floor next to it on the counter for about 15 minutes. Then I heard her very stealthily take it from the counter.

She placed it on her blanket but never chewed on it. It was like she was saying, "That is my bone and even if you don’t want me to chew on it now, it belongs on my blanket!". Her level of intelligence is so amazing!

We took Freida on an adventure today. She loves car rides and is very attentive to what we are passing by. We went to Wild River State Park for a hike, where she absolutely loved all the new smells.

Towards the end, she cooled off in the St Croix River, did a lengthy roll in the beach sand, followed by another swim to get some of the sand out. Freida was one happy gal!

Freida had an unfortunate incident on a walk last week. A dog ran through the invisible fence from its yard, into the road and charged her. They mixed it up for about a minute and Freida came out of it with some minor scratches.

We do not know the owners, but believe the dog is new to their home and lacks in training. We are so sad that this happened to her, since she was already fearful of other dogs! Since then, Freida has become more reactive to dogs on walks. Who can blame the poor girl!

We are now walking Freida in areas or at times when she is unlikely to see another dog. With time, she should put the incident behind her and consistently respond to ‘leave it’ and ‘let’s go’ as she did before.

Here are photos of Freida on a walk. Despite the incident, she really looks forward to them in the morning and evening! Note the upward gaze for squirrels.

Freida is very comfortable in our home now, just like an official member of the pack. She is a smart gal and has figured out one thing no other foster dog has. If she sits in front of the back sliding glass door, she has learned that it is possible to just barely peer thru the woods and see foster dad’s truck on the road when he is coming home. That way she can be ready and waiting to greet him at the front door when he pulls in the driveway.

She really has started showing another aspect to her affectionate side too, belly rubs. Below are photos of her favorite pose for belly rubs. They are also a regular activity on the human bed in the morning when we invite her up to say ‘good morning’!

Freida would be a loyal and affectionate addition to the right family. Please consider her if it seems like a good fit for you!

Freida came into RAGOM’s care because her owner was experiencing health issues. She is a gorgeous 4 year old black flat coat retriever at 68lbs. She is an unbelievably happy and contented soul that loves walks, playing with humans and all forms of attention. Freida is fearful of other dogs and will need a family with no dogs or cats.

Other than needing to lose about 6 lbs, Freida has no health issues, is UTD on shots, and spayed. She will occasionally counter surf if an easy opportunity presents itself, but outside that has excellent manners with free roam in the house at all times.

It is obvious her previous owner spent time training her. She knows the commands sit, lay, leave it, and shake. She sleeps on a dog bed in our bedroom but also migrates to the living room couch or dog bed. She will jump on the human bed if invited.

Freida loves to spend time outside watching whatever comes into her view be it birds, squirrels, or deer. She will do the same from inside the house laying in front of the sliding glass door. Because she is an avid squirrel hunter and fearful of other dogs, a fenced yard is required.

Freida really looks forward to her morning and late afternoon walks. Pulling on walks needs work but it is significantly better with a harness. If she encounters another dog it is without incident if it is not close up and we continue walking telling her ‘leave it’ and ‘let’s go’. She is not a good candidate to walk on sidewalks in a city or suburban setting where she would pass closely by other dogs. We walk her in a rural setting on dirt roads or the Gateway trail.

Freida loves belly rubs and tennis balls equally. She plays fetch in the house but only tennis balls will do. She knows the command ‘drop’ so she can chase the ball again.
