Hi everyone.....my name is Gabe!!  I am thought to be about 4 months old, and I was picked up as a stray with my buddy Gage, who is also looking for a home.   As you can see, I have some skin issues!  The nice doctors in Ames, IA are trying to figure out just what is going on.  They thought at first it was some kind of mange, but have pretty much ruled that out since they couldn't find any of the nasty mites.  We are waiting on biopsies to see what they show.  I heard one Dr. tell my FD that it could be some kind of chemical burn or maybe allergies.  I really don't seem to itch and my FM loves to rub my bald skin 'cause she says it is "soft as a baby's bottom". I love all the attention!

We have to do a lot right now.  I have to have a bath 2 times a week with a special shampoo, followed by a lotion that stays on.  I have to have my belly and chest sprayed with some medicine 2 times a day, and a liquid between my toes and on the back of my ears 2 times a day.  I take a antibiotic once a day, and some oil on my food once a day!!  Wow, I don't know how they keep track of it. Plus FM keeps a shirt on me so I cannot pull out any of the stitches from my biopsies!

FM went to the store today and bought me some great toys!  I love to run and get them and bring them back.  It makes FM laugh and tell me what a good boy I am.  I am learning to walk on a leash pretty good but mom says I am "strong as a horse"!!  I was really scared when I went in the house.  FM doesn't think I have ever been in one as the stairs and slippery seemed to be something new for me.

I will give everyone an update when the doctor calls back.  One thing that is a must for me is another dog!!  I don't really like being by myself, and could really use a big brother or sister to watch and learn from.  And they HAVE to play with me!!!

Ta Ta for now and please send happy thoughts my way!!!

Hi guys!  I did it!  I found my forever family… Or they found me.  Whatever.  We found each other!  They drove all the way to Iowa to pick me up last weekend.  After I bounced around to make sure they noticed me real good, I settled right in on the couch with my new mom and took a snooze.  You can see her awesome scratching hands in the picture!  Mmmm hmmm. And guess what!  In addition to being smart, handsome, and talented, my new dad and I are just generally nice guys.  We share so many similarities, you probably wouldn’t even know I was adopted if you saw us together on the street.  How cool is that?  My new sister, Daisy, came all the way to Iowa to meet me, too.  She is a pretty nice old gal.  We sniffed appropriate parts until I got a little fresh and she put me in my place.  My other new fur-sister, Lily, waited for me at home.  I’m working hard to let her know that I am ready to play, but I guess I’m in the dog house with her for stealing some of her attention…

FM says even though I am adopted, she will update my site when she gets the results back from my DNA test because she knows all my fans will want to know the outcome of the Big Bet. I don’t care too much myself, because whatever it says I’m still just me.  Speaking of me, you will have to get used to calling me Riley, ‘cause that is my forever name!  I think I’ll miss these guys, but most of all I will miss chasing Joe the cat.  I really like to wrestle with him, and I’m pretty sure he likes to wrestle with me because he makes lots of loud noises like he is having a really good time.

Thanks to everyone from RAGOM, especially my first foster family, for helping me find my forever home!

Love,

Riley B.

Hi everyone! Gabe here. Normally I can’t get my new FM to update my page more than once a week. I don’t know why since there is so much good stuff to say about me! But, today I did something so shocking that even she had to admit it was worth a midweek update. I took a shower! That’s right. My FM was in there doing… Well… Doing whatever she does, and I fought my way through the fog and the laundry mountains to find out what was going on in there. I put on my worried face and sure enough, she opened the door to make sure I knew everything was just fine. As soon as I saw my opening I stuck my nose right in and refused to retreat until I got a good look. She kept saying “In or out, Gabe”, which I must say was a significant improvement over the noise she was making before that. She called it singing, but I don’t think that word means what she thinks it means. Anyway, she said in or out, but what she really meant was out, and so I decided to surprise her and jumped right on in! I don’t know what was so funny about it, but it made her laugh and snort like a piggy-hyena hybrid. She called FD out of his sick-bed to take a picture of me through the door. Check it out!

I hung out in the rain closet with her until she was done. It was nice and toasty-warm in there, and drinks were unlimited! Then we got out and had playtime with the towel. All-in-all it was fun enough that when FD headed in later, I waited by the door the whole time for a chance to do it again! Unfortunately, I must be limited to one shower a day, because he wasn’t having any of it. On the plus side, check out my handsome self!

We can’t get enough of this silly boy! His personality is 100% lovable Golden. He is a first-rate cuddler, and is extra-good right now because the fur that would normally insulate him isn’t there! That means he feels like an extra-large warming bottle when he is curled up with us. What a treat! He does sleep in bed with us, but we figure with 95 pounds of dog already hogging the bed, what’s another 50? He also snuggles up for TV time!

He loves to play, and is working on what to do with toys after he retrieves them. It’s pretty tempting to just lay down and play a little instead of bringing it back for another throw. He especially loves other dogs. He’ll tug, wrestle, and has a great time playing chase in the yard with his new pal, former RAGOM girl Tessa 10-172. Earlier this week we visited a puppy who is being trained as a service dog by a RAGOM volunteer. It was so funny to watch them race around and chase each other!

Gabe does need a little work on his manners, but many of his issues are related to puppy enthusiasm and will resolve with some time and effort. He is trying hard to learn to wait for his dinner and doing a great job. He has to sit while I put it on the floor, and then wait until I give the ok. Good job Gabe! He is also learning to sit when someone has food rather than getting up close and personal. He still needs work on jumping up (I just want to be close to you!), walking on a flat leash (squirrel!), and the finishing touches on his potty training. He was almost fully trained at his previous foster and had a little backslide when he moved… Totally expected in a dog this age.

In terms of eating things, like many Goldens he loves to carry stuff in his mouth, but he will easily and gently surrender things when he picks up an item that doesn’t belong to him. He doesn’t bother things that aren’t on the floor and he hasn’t been destructive of anything significant (just the occasional Nerf dart that finds its way into his territory).

He has free roam when we are home and at night (except for the kids rooms which both resemble the ruins of a Lego factory explosion). When we leave he goes into the crate after a treat and settles down nicely.

We are thrilled to have this kiddo with us!

Hi all! It’s me, Gabe! Betcha you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to… Well, I moved! That’s right, my super-dooper foster mom decided that even though it would be really hard to let me go, it would be better for me to be with a different foster for now. My eyes watered a little bit when we said goodbye. Crying? Nooooo. Big boys like me don’t do that kind of stuff… FM just squeezed me so hard, my insides leaked out a little. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Let me tell you a little about me. I’m what you call unconventionally handsome. So, if you are interested in old-school classic beauty, I’m not your guy. FM the second (I’ll call her FM II for brevity) says I’ve got an edgy, fashion-forward look about me. I’ve been variously compared to Billy Idol during his mohawk phase, Gizmo from the Gremlins movie (don’t get me wet or feed me after midnight), a Chinese Crested dog (seriously?), The Donald minus his comb-over, and the ROUS (rodent of unusual size) from the Princess Bride. FM II and her brother even have a bet going about whether or not I have Chinese Crested in my ancestry… Loser has to pay for the doggie DNA test they ordered today, and as family tradition dictates, will be mercilessly reminded he was wrong (oops!) who was wrong.

I think I’m pretty much a one-of-a-kind, original, break-the-mold kinda fellow, so none of those comparisons really do me justice. If you want to know what I’m like, you’re just gonna have to meet me and judge for yourself!

Wow... have you seen that I have some Christmas Sponsors? Thank you Skye and Scout, Kathy and Jeff M., and the loving humans of a special golden named Max!!! What wonderful people there are in the world!!

I am doing just great! A nice Ragom lady made me some special coats to keep me warm in the cold weather and they work great! Pics to follow. Speaking of cold weather, I really didn't know WHAT to think of this white stuff called SNOW!!! FM laughed at me cause I was kind of scared and didn't like the coldness on my feet!! But I am getting the hang of it finally thanks to my little buddy, Ovie. He showed me that it could be lots of fun to chase each other and frolic in it! Sometimes we get carried away and get in trouble as we don't get our "business" done!! LOL

I am so ready to get into my forever home! Don't let my lack of hair scare you!! The Dr.'s say that there is nothing wrong with me...... and the hair on my back seems to be coming back in. Or else the hair I have is getting longer and covering up my bare spot! Either way..... I am quite a catch for someone.

FM says I have some food issues cause I really gobble my food down fast. Too fast sometimes and it comes back up!! So, she started putting my food in a cupcake pan to slow me down. It works but seems kind of silly to me.

As you can see in the pics, I get along with dogs and cats! I try to play with the cat but she doesn't really appreciate it. I think it is fun to put my foot on her head or hold her down by the neck but she doesn't see it that way. Fuddy duddy!!! Lucky for me she got her "sharp toenails" taken care of last week cause they hurt!!

And did I tell you I went to the vet and got neutered??? Yeah, that wasn't much fun but I took it like a trooper!! Didn't slow me down at all!! I was back wrestling with my little friend right away!

I also started sleeping on the bed at night!!! I used to be scared of it but now I think it is ALL RIGHT!! The only accidents I have had in the house were after my surgery and I think it was the pain med that made me have them. Since I have been off them, I have not had any. FM said I was a good boy cause I did it on the tile floor and not the carpet.

So, if you think Santa should bring you a special little boy to keep your lap warm or maybe be your personal furnace at bed time, please contact RAGOM and let's talk!!! I am patiently waiting for you!!!!

Gabe is resting tonight.  He had his neuter yesterday, and came home today.  He was one happy boy to get back home!!  As you can see in the pictures, he has settled right into the family.  He has become quite a lap dog and a daddy's boy!!

Also in the pictures you will see what our little guy ingested one morning before we got up.  My husband's metal watch band!!!  We took him to the vet immediately, and they took an x-ray revealing a stomach full!!  Not only the watch band but a rock, some sticks and string!!!  They opted to avoid surgery and instead make him throw up his "treasures".  He has to be watched when outside as he loves to pick up rocks and such!!

He had a follow up visit to Ames last week, and they are still not sure about his hair loss.  They can find nothing wrong with his skin, and the Dr.said that it could also be a genetic issue.  They said that he doesn't need anything special for his skin, but a bath every couple weeks would be good for him.  It appears that the hair on his back is starting to come in a little, but not on his head or stomach.  With no undercoat, his adoptive parents will have to be very careful when Gabe is in the elements.  This would be in the cold and as well as the sun!!

He has been playing the past few days with our son's 4 month old Golden puppy and it never stops!!  They run and wrestle for HOURS on end!  A fur brother or sister is a MUST for this little boy!!

He continues to be a wonderful foster and will be a great addition to someone's family.  Please call placement if you are interested in learning more about Gabe!!

Well, Gabe has officially met the "elders" in our house. Since we found out he is not contagious he is spending his days upstairs with the others. He has not had any accidents and listens pretty good to them when they tell him to back off. He has a strange habit of licking other dogs mouths! Our dogs don't really appreciate it but let him do it a little. He still goes in the kennel at night cause he is one of those puppies that will eat/chew on anything and everything he comes upon! A work in progress!!

You will see from the pictures that it has taken no time at all for him to fall in love with the inside of a house!! He loves the couch and he hoards all the toys on it. Doesn't like to share his stuff but does not guard it at all!!!

We had a scare today when he was on the tie out. He was excited to see a girl walk by and ran to meet her but the end of the rope didn't stop him!! The collar broke and he kept going!! My husband called his name and he immediately came back......thank goodness! We have noticed that he does have really good recall so that is nice. So, maybe a fence would be a good idea for our little muscle man!!

He is very interested in our cat and sometimes has to be sidetracked. He gets fixated on her and will not leave her alone. The hissing and swatting doesn't seen to phase him! I don't really think that he means her any harm but he doesn't give up!!!

We still don't know anything more about his skin. Anyone interested in adopting him would have to keep in mind that he might never have any more problems with his skin but there is always the possibility he could. We just don't know.

If you would like to know more about our little boy, please contact RAGOM and we can talk!

Woo Hoo!!! I have a sponsor!! Uh, I don't really know what that is but I heard FM saying something about an angel! So thank you Mary T. for being MY angel!!! Puppy kisses to you!!

I am doing just great! I sent some pics of me playing with my new friend, Sam, today!! He is kind of an old man and when I got to be a little too much for him......he told me to knock it off!! Once I settled down we played tug of war and chased after some toys. Seems no matter what toy I had.....HE wanted it. So, I let him have it. When I tried to get it back, he said some not nice things so I found a different toy. But he was so very patient with me. Even when I tried to stretch his ear across the garage!! LOL.

FM said my forever home will have to keep an eye on me outside cause when I see a rabbit or squirrel......I WANT IT!!! Just about took FM's arm out of the socket on a walk the other night!! She says that I am young and need to learn some manners. Something about me going to school.......

We have cut back on the baths and medicine since my skin issue is not contagious and doesn't seem to bother me. Thank goodness!! I don't really have fur...it is more like hair as I don't have any undercoat. FM thinks a winter coat would be a good idea for me since I don't have the extra protection. But, who knows....it may come back in time. And if not, everyone thinks I am "so stinkin' cute" just as I am.

Well, enough for now. Gonna go get FM and see if she will take me for a walk! Maybe I can find my self a rabbit! TTFN and thanks again Mary T. and I hope I can meet you someday to tell you in person! You're the best!!!
