Gabe (Ace 08-254)

Profile

Ace 08-254 and Amara 08-255 are siblings and came to us through the same owner as Joey 08-251, Jared 08-252 and Jordan 08-253. Relatives thought they wanted to keep these two darlings but in the end, they decided puppies were too much work and too much of a responsibility for them to handle at this time so they have now turned them over to RAGOM. Ace and Amara have the same mother as Joey, Jared and Jordan. They are part Golden Retriever and part Gordon Setter.

We have a vet appointment late tomorrow afternoon so we will find out more information at that time. We do know they are approximately 8 weeks old, NOT house trained as they were kept outside in a garage kennel, love to play, get along great with other dogs and cats, love to sleep on top of my Goldens and seem to be in really good health.

Last night after they found my arm pit and hair to snuggle into, they slept all night until 5:30 AM this morning. What good little puppies!

Ace is all black and seems a little more shy than his sister. He has the ‘I’m a big boy’ syndrome and tries to keep up with my Goldens. He loves to get right into my neck and snuggle in my hair. He is a little frightened of loud and new noises. He’s also not sure when the big dogs bark and will come running back to me. He is the first one in the house when something scares him. I’m sure everything is just so new to him right now. He’s a very handsome little guy though and I’m sure he will just need some time to adjust.

Updates

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Hi everyone! It's me, Ace. My foster mom always writes these updates but I think I know myself better than anyone, so it's my turn! Besides, I'm responsible enough......after all, I AM 11 weeks old now!

My sister Amara got adopted and went to her new home on Monday. At first I was a little sad but now I am doing much better. FM says I am acting all spunky now and developing my own personality apart from my sister. I'm getting taller and I can jump right up on the couches (my foster brothers stare at me because I guess dogs arent supposed to be up there). I like to jump up there when FM isn't watching and grab the throw pillows....then make a run for it! For some reason FM doesn't like me to do that though and she always spoils my fun. Oh well, I'll keep trying and maybe one of these times she will think it is funny.

I really like going for walks. FM keeps trying to get me to walk on her left side but I like to go back and forth to check out everything. Sometimes she trips on me but I think that is her fault....she really ought to be more careful and watch where she is walking. I've seen all sorts of new things and love it when people stop to pet me and tell me how cute I am.

I'm starting to be able to actually find the balls that FM throws. At first they went to fast and I didn't know where they went. Now I can usually find them and I bring them back to her most of the time! I think she really likes the game so I usually play with her for awhile until I get sidetracked.

Sometimes it feels really good on my puppy teeth to chew on things, I don't try to be naughty but I have lots of energy and there are so many things to pull on. FM sometimes put this "Bitter Apple" spray on things though and it doesn't taste very good so I have to find something else to chew on. I'm not sure why she doesn't let me have my fun but I try to be a good boy and she is happy. I do like it when she puts treats in a Kong or gives me a stuffed shin bone to chew on. I'm getting stronger each day and I can carry the big bone around now (most of the time). See, there are 3 other dogs that live here so I have to grab a toy if I want it before anyone else gets it. I like playing with the dogs here and am learning new things from them. Sometimes they don't pay enough attention to me and I have to use my voice to tell them I want to play. FM thinks it cute but says I shouldn't bark for things I want.

I really like eating and will sit when FM brings my bowl to me. I really like chewing on ice cubes too. When FM opens the freezer I come by her and sit so she will give me an ice cube. She says that is an ok thing for me to chew on plus they are slippery so I get to chase them all over the floor. Wheeee!!!

I'm hoping that I will get to meet my forever family soon. I like it here with FM and my foster brothers but I am excited to meet my very own forever family. I'm so handsome, sweet, smart, and playful.......I don't know what else someone could ask for!

I learned one thing today.....everything and anything must smell and taste better after a fresh rain! I was gone for the majority of the day so Ace was crated the entire 9 hrs with the exception of a mid day potty break. Needless to say when I got home he and his sister Amara 08-255 were HYPER! Luckily the rain stopped so I thought it would be a great time to take them both for a long walk.....thinking that of course they would be tired from that and take a little nap when we got back. Nope. We went for a long walk and I kept waiting to see a tired pup behind me. Oh my goodness... the grass, the dirt, the puddles, the rocks, and even little chunks of cement became irresistible. I even ran a half a block (I don't run....I was winded sad to say) but all puppy paws were happily running and seemed to be loving it. If you are looking for a running partner Ace may be just that partner!

I say all that to remind everyone that on top of being ADORABLE, puppies require a lot of attention. A dog at any age who does not get enough exercise and stimulation will become destructive. Some breeds may not require as much exercise as others but Goldens and Gordon Setters tend to have a lot of energy.

Ace has begun doing a few new things. For one, he is putting that hunting nose of his to work to find that special treasure (i.e., a seed, or a yummy worm). His sweet sister has showed him just how useful his paws can be to dig and they can make pretty good progress together. :) Ace has also been sitting more instead of jumping (though as a puppy he does plenty of that as well). He usually sits before I put his food dish down, and will also sit when someone approaches to pet! That's great manners for such a little tyke. Ace has also discovered his voice and has become more vocal if he wants something. I am working on teaching him that is not OK. Oh, being the athlete he is, baby gates are no problem for him to climb over. He tends to respect them if I am in the same room although sometimes decides the grass is greener on the other side. Today I had to close both him and Amara in the bathroom while I showered. Neither of them liked being stuck in there with loud noises and they snuggled up in the corner together until they regained their freedom.

He is really pretty good at doing his business outside considering he is only 10 weeks old. If I am in the same room as him (like overnight) he has been whining to let me know he needs to go out. I did learn today though he doesn't search me out if he needs to go. I was in a different part of the house for a few minutes and when I came back he had left me a little pile of presents. Hey, when you have to go, you have to go! When we go outside he usually does his duty pretty quickly and has decided his favorite spot is right up along the neighbors fence. It's nice that he has found his favorite spot and maybe that means he could be trained to only use one part of the yard at his forever home. No promises on that one though. :)

Ace is a gorgeous, sweet, energetic puppy who will be a wonderful addition to a family!

I have been temp fostering Ace for a few days now while he waits to catch a ride to Iowa where his permanent foster mom is. He and his sister Amara 08-255 arrived here Wednesday night and have been doing pretty well. He is as adorable as can be with wavy fur on his ears and shiny black coat, and his personality shines as well! He has taken things in stride and everyone who meets him falls in love.

I did bring him into the vet yesterday because he was having diarrhea and threw up his breakfast. Amara went too, and because the vet was fitting us inbetween other appointments we ended up having to wait for about an hour to be seen. He didn't want to lay down on the hard tile floor so we ended up right next to the front door on the doormat.....sort of the welcoming committee except for the fact they both slept and people had to walk over them. Luckily everyone thought it was cute as could be that the door was a bit blocked by a couple of sleeping pups. :)

He weighed in at 18.6 lbs and his fecal results were negative. The vet felt Ace was a little dehydrated so they gave him some fluids and we decided it was best to just watch the diarrhea and vomiting before deciding if he needed any medications. I am happy to report that he ate just fine today and has kept it down. His stools are still on the soft side but they are getting better so hopefully the fluids took care of things.

One thing that I am so impressed about with Ace is that he whines when he needs to go outside. At 8-9 weeks old! The first night he was here he whined 2x during the night. I wasn't convinced it meant anything but we went outside anyway. Yup, he did both duties when we got out there! He has continued to whine and be successful when we go out. He has only had one accident (a #2) but that was yesterday when his stools were very runny and after it happened I realized he had been whining a few minutes before......I just didn't think anything of it. I take blame for that one.

Email placementatragom [dot] org if you want to meet this beauty.....just be warned that if you meet him....you will fall in love.
