Gauge 05-173

Profile

6/20/05: Gauge arrived at his foster home Saturday afternoon. He is a three and a half year old dark golden boy with a touch of white on his chest. After meeting the resident dogs with just the usual sniff and ignore he was out exploring the yard and the kiddie pool. Gauge is a big boy and will need to continue to lose weight. He has yet to go to the vet so I am uncertain about his weight, but I am certain he will be told he needs to lose some! Gauge goes to the vet later this week to get caught up on all his shots and then he will visit the groomer's! Another foster mom came over to help introduce Gauge to my resident dogs and helped me trim a lot of matts off him - now it's off to the professionals to make him look really spiffy!

I have discovered that Gauge likes to play with his drinking water - he was splashing his paws in it before drinking. Since I don't want to be always mopping up the floor, the water bowl is now only about half full, which means I have to fill it more often. Splashing, laying, and drinking in the pool is OK and a great way to stay cool.

Gauge came from a family that had kids and cats. I think a family with older kids would be best for Gauge so that they don't give in to his barking for 'people' treats. He gives up after a few minutes but you must endure a few minutes of 'explaining' from Gauge on why he should help you with your food. I think this will improve as he learns that it is no longer effective. He is starting to want to play with my two resident dogs now that he is getting settled in. He has been known to counter surf (if he can see the food on the counter) and raid the garbage (if the lid is off), but we are solving that by having clean counters and removing the garbage from the kitchen for the time being.

Watch for updates after his vet appointment and new pictures to follow after his make over!

I am the luckiest boy in the history of the planet! I've been adopted by a wonderful family who drove all the way from Iowa last weekend just to meet me! ME!!!!! Of course by the time they got back home they knew they had to have me, so they came back this weekend! This is the best day ever! My new family has promised they'll send in updates on me with pictures and everything. I just know I'm gonna live the Golden life I was meant to have. I'm a lucky, lucky boy! Hoping to come to the picnic. See you all there????

Gauge is such a handsome boy and much to my chagrin, I didn't recognize him when I went to pick him up. Everyone at the groomer's loved him, too. He got to hang out there all day; after his bath it appears he got to expand his circle of friends. When I came to pick him up he was running around with lots of new playmates. I had one tired dog later that night!

Of course, now that he is all clean he had to go walk through my kiddie pool even more times when he got home! Oh well, at least it was only the feet and part of his legs that got wet. And then he was trying to 'catch' the reflection of the bird feeder. He couldn't understand why it kept getting away when he grabbed it.

I think Gauge could benefit from some obedience classes. He knows sit and down, but he is so excited with your attention that he doesn't stay sitting or down for long. He's your typical Golden who loves to please you, but he just needs a bit of guidance.

Here are some new pictures of him after his day at the groomer's.
