Gauge is such a gentle, sweet dog! We absolutely adore him, as does our 2-year old granddaughter and our geriatric cat, Larry! In fact, Gauge gets along with everybody - fur bodied or not.
Recently, we took care of my brother’s 6 year old Australian Shepherd (Quinn) while they were on vacation and he and Gauge became almost inseparable! They romped and played together in the yard and took naps together on the deck. When Quinn went back to his home, Gauge clearly missed him. So, he is going to have a play date with Quinn this weekend.
It’s amazing how mellow he is with our granddaughter. He is about three times her size but is so gentle with her. She loves to feed him and snuggle with him. They recently got a ten week old Golden Retriever puppy and Gauge is mellow with him too. They will be good buddies as little Leo grows up.
I would say that walks are Gauge’s favorite activity! He LOVES them! We enjoy hiking the trails on our property and he tells us it's time for a walk by leading us toward the trail.
He is a wonderful companion when we go camping in our little r-pod camper. People always come up to greet him because he’s just so friendly and happy. My husband is retired, so, he and Gauge head up into the woods quite often together or run errands in the car. So, Gauge really doesn’t have to spend much time alone at home - he is excellent company.
I will also admit that he is the first dog that we have allowed to sleep on the couch and also in our bedroom. That’s how well-behaved and endearing he is! He has his routine of hanging out with us in the evenings and then knows to go outside to do his business before coming upstairs to bed. A visitor to our house this past weekend said, “Your dog is so human-like. What a wonderful boy he is.” And, she is a cat person not a dog person!
In summary, Gauge is happy, mellow, fun, and about the sweetest dog we’ve ever had. He fits right in and we feel very privileged to have him be a part of our family!! He is easy to love!!

Gaugie has been adopted. Thank you to everyone who indicated an interest in him. Each of you was "qualified", which made the decision process very difficult. I appreciate your willingness and commitment to adopting one of our special RAGOM pups.
Gaugie travelled to his Forever Home yesterday. He is now in northern Minnesota, overlooking Lake Superior, and "living the dream". His home is surrounded by lots of wooded acreage for him to explore. His new mom and dad are outdoor enthusiasts and we can't wait to hear whether Gaugie (a) swims - or wants to learn and (b) likes to go fishing. We already know that he loves walking and hiking!
Most important, as the center of attention, we're certain this dear boy will be loved to pieces and, probably, spoiled. Just as it should be! Lots of love goes with you, Gaugie, and with your mom and dad, along with all our wishes for a wonderful life.

When Gauge arrived 10 days ago, he was sad and confused. He didn't recognize anyone and nothing was familiar. He walked into the house, chose the couch as his "safe spot" and didn't move for 6 hours. Poor guy! We coaxed him off the couch that evening, presented him with a tempting dinner and proceeded to gives him lots of love. And so Gauge started and has continued to settle in beautifully over the intervening 10 days.
Gaugie went to the vet for his wellness checkup several days after he arrived. It was thorough - fecal, CBC, chem panel and heartworm tests. He received all his shots and was microchipped. He does have an ear infection and needs to lose some weight. Otherwise, the vet described his health as "excellent". Yippee for Gaugie! A side note: he loves riding in the car - sits quietly in the back and watches the world go by.
So, lets talk a bit about Gaugie's weight. He has a large frame and thick bones. But, at 107 pounds, it's too much weight. We're meeting that challenge with a tried and true formula. Gaugie's kibbel has been reduced and we've introduced canned green beans (excellent for bulk and roughage) into his diet. Admittedly, Gaugie regarded the first few meals that included the green beans with some suspicion, but after that, he has proceeded to inhale all his meals with gusto!
Gaugie also enrolled in our exercise regimen - which means walks every day! The first week Gaugie easily covered a mile a day. His pace remained constant and he was not fatigued. To the contrary, he loves his walks and alertly monitors all the "action" in the neighborhood (admittedly, not much goes on!). So, now in our second week, we've increased our distance to 1 1/2 miles a day. No problem! He is a total gentleman - walks calmly and doesn't pull on the leash. Just a marvelous companion!
Some of the highlights that will give everyone a better picture of this gentle giant are: housebroken, has free roam of the house (no need to crate or restrain), quiet (has only barked twice since he arrived), gets along with the Resident Dogs as if he's always been here. He is calm, gentle and affectionate (loves attention and is a pro at the "Golden lean"). He invariably comes when he's called and exhibits no prey drive (Sammie the Squirrel is grateful). In short, we can't find any negatives. We have fallen in love with him and you will too!
