Miss Georgia Brown as I call her, has been with our family in South Minneapolis for four days now. She is a sweet, funny, and a little bossy, lady. She was a stray from Springfield, MO and is estimated to be about 7 yrs. old.

She loves going for walks and car rides and is completely potty-trained. She loves being outside and still has a bit of puppy in her as she will try to chase squirrels and birds. Her personality has continued to come out slowly and she now rolls around on the carpet on her back and barks just once, before she lays down. I have never seen her on the couch but her fur mysteriously appears on it after being away from the house.

She was thought to have a not-so-nice last home so, we went very slow with her with our movements and hands. She now completely trusts us and loves to have her chest scratched, be brushed and get massages, especially on her senior hips. She even lets me touch her paws and is starting to let me touch her belly. She is no longer jumpy and jerky when we move our hands around her head. She is pretty easy to read and will let me know when she's bored and it's time for a walk, or go roam around the yard, if she's hungry or needs to go potty. She likes to have me within sight but is not the typical Golden-leaner or cuddler.

She has been left alone for 6 hours at the longest and did great. She did not damage or chew anything and was not even confined. She did not bark when we had someone come to the door. She takes treats very gently, and eats her meals out of my hand.

Georgia will need a fence as she tried to jump our 3-ft. fence. She also does not like cats or other dogs and would do best as the only resident. She's an older gal who wants her space. She does growl at my resident 12-yr-old dog and barks at the cat. She has made a huge improvement as she is now allowed off-leash in the house and the animals have apparently come to a mutual agreement to completely avoid each other.

There are 5 kids next door under the age of 12 and she ignores their ear-piercing screams and just avoids them. She also ignores the two yappy ankle-biters next door even though they harass her through the chain-link fence.

Georgia may have Cushing's Disease but, we are working on getting her an ultrasound to confirm/deny this. Other than that her first vet visit went well. She is a funny, sassy girl, who would make someone incredibly happy.

Thanks,
Christine, Robert, Mabel, Chester and of course, Mz. Georgia Brown

Georgia has been the pickiest foster dog we have had so far, so picky in fact it is hard to believe she was a stray dog. Little did we know she could have been won over with a diet of snow. J Every time we let her out she is eating snow and loving it! We went for a short walk today and when we walked over an un-shoveled sidewalk she would scoop up a mouth full of snow. Her gray muzzle was white on the walk.

This cutie pie makes us laugh every day and her sassy attitude keeps us on our toes.

Georgia dressed up as a Bull for Halloween, and we thought she was adorable. She didn't mind too much because she was given treats. :-)

Click here to watch the cowboy ride the Georgia Bull.

We have started Georgia on Tramadal, for pain management, since she was showing some signs of pain. Since giving her the pain meds her appetite has seemed to improve, which we were happy about.

Georgia continues to do well with us, in fact the longer we have her the more we spoil her. She is a special little dog and have enjoyed her as a guest in our house. Even when we need to let here out in the middle of the night...she still brings a smile to our faces.

Sorry we have been slacking on Miss Georgia's updates, the last few weeks have flown by!

Georgia is loving fall and still loves walks. When I get home in the evening the first thing she does when I let her out is roll in the leaves. We are also still enjoying Georgia as our house guest, she is a special little furbutt.

I took Georgia for a long walk today and I realized every time we go out see brings smiles to peoples faces. While we were waiting to cross the street today someone rolled down their window to tell me "she is cute!" When we got home from the walk Tyler and I took Georgia outside and took a bunch of pictures.

Enjoy the pictures of Georgia, she is sure to make you smile. If you are interested in this loyal companion, just contact you placement advisor. Thanks for check in on Georgia!

Miss Georgia continues to do well with us, but we know her furever family is out there. If you are her family, contact your placement advisor and let them know you need to meet this sweet girl.

My wife and I have come to the conclusion we may have been taking Georgia for too many car rides, because when we go out for a walk she will walk directly to the car parked out front in anticipation of where we are going. We assume with her smiling face she is wondering….”What fun place might we be going? To get ice cream cones? Going for a walk in the wooded park? Are we visiting friends or family? Do I get a yummy oatmeal-crasin cookie and Grandma and Grandpa’s?” She seems slightly disappointed when we tell her we aren’t going anywhere, but snaps out of it when she realizes we are going for a walk in the neighborhood.

We took a picture of her laying all splayed out cooling off on the wooden floor when we got back from our longer walk. She is just so cute. We are really surprised no one has decided they cannot live without this peanut yet.

Georgia is loving fall! Not only is it cooler outside, but there are squirrels, chipmunks and field mice to sniff out and chase.

I was out of town this week for work, so I woke up early on the day I left to be sure to get one more walk in with Georgia. It was early enough in the morning and dark enough, so I decided to put her green led collar on. J We were a few blocks short of the end of the walk when Georgia seemed to trip. When I checked to make sure she was okay she “tripped” again. Then I heard awful squeaking/screaming noise and it was then I realized Georgia had not tripped, but was on the hunt. She was trying to trap a field mouse under her paw. I can only imagine what the mouse was thinking, “Why is this green glowing circle trying to attack me?” I kept trying to pull Georgia away from the mouse and the mouse kept running toward the circle of light. Needless to say Georgia tried her hardest to get a taste of the field mouse, but the mouse ended up on the winning side of this battle.

She has such a good sniffer and this fall season is really showing how well she can “hunt.” While I was away this week, my husband reported she chased a chipmunk up our gutter spout in the backyard. She took off the bottom part of the gutter to get at the chipmunk and when Tyler removed the gutter from her mouth to get a picture of her she realized the chipmunk was in the vertical gutter spout on the house still squeaking, so she bit the gutter to take one last shot at it. J What a goofball.

Today Georgia got to do one of her favorite things, run errands with me. She loves to take car rides. After our last stop today I put her in the car and I turned around to say goodbye to my mother-in-law and when I looked back at the car she was climbing into the front seat to investigate the smells in the driver’s side floor mats. I did get a picture of her in the front seat, but she was no longer hot on the trail of whatever she was sniffing out. J

I missed her while I was gone, so I gave her a marrow bone as a gift for being a “good girl” while being away. She loves her marrow bones!

We wanted to thank everyone who came to meet Georgia at Goldzilla; she was thrilled to meet you. She was certainly overwhelmed with all the dogs at Goldzilla. Instead of her usually "screening" process she just barked at any dogs who entered her personal space. She was a little on edge. We sure got a kick out of her because she was acting tough.

We also want to thank all of the RAGOM volunteers who made Goldzilla possible; what a fun event! Thank you to everyone who contributed to RAGOM through the Goldzilla event; especially those who contributed to Golden Team Hopkins!

Enjoy the pictures we took of Miss Georgia at the event.

Georgia was concerned about going to Goldzilla tomorrow and not being a Pure Breed golden Retriever. We told her not to worry, people are going to think you are as cute as we do. However, we wanted to put her mind at ease, so we took her to Bubbly Paws today to get her some feathers! Now she has feathers just like any other Golden. :-)

See you tomorrow at Goldzilla! Thanks to everyone who has already contributed to our fund raising efforts. If you were still planning on donating, it is not too late. Please click on the below link and we will make sure the money will help more dogs out this coming year.

Oh my goodness Foster Mom has official lost it! Tonight when I told her I was ready for a walk she was glad to take me, but because it was dark out she put a LED collar on me; how embarassing! The squirrels think I am nuts and they are the experts! I am not sure I will be able to show my face in the neighborhood again.

Anyway I just wanted to say I will be at Goldzilla on Saturday from 11AM-1PM. I will be in the Foster Showcase Tent from 11-12; with the "parade" to follow.

Foster Mom and Foster Dad keep talking about raising money for Goldzilla, so if you are looking for a worthy cause, check out RAGOM. http://goldzilla.dojiggy.com/goldenteamhopkins

Get me out of here!

Georgia had a great weekend which included a bunch of car rides; her favorite! We went to St. Paul on Saturday for a walk and we exhausted poor Georgia, but she was super happy. She even showed us she is a Wild fan, but is looking forward to it being cooler so we can go on longer walks!

Miss Georgia came with us to visit foster Grandma and Grandpa. She showed them how she likes to talk to us…I believe we even had a couple of “silent” barks coupled with some groans of disapproval; for us not paying attention to her. She is so funny.

Friday, September 9, 2011

I know we have mentioned this before, but Georgia LOVES to go for walks. She is also a pleasure to take for a walk. She is great on a leash; in fact the only time she pulls on the leash is when she REALLY wants to get her sniffer close to something or if she sees a squirrel. Usually hitting the end of the leash is enough for her to stop pulling. Lately however, when she sees a squirrel I have been “running” with her to the base of the tree. J (Her “run” is really just a slightly faster trot…very cute.)

Georgia has gone to Chuck and Don’s a few times with us and when she comes in she will turn heads. Other people think she is just as cute as we think she is. With school back in session we are running into more people when we are on our morning walks. She thinks anybody we pass will want to pet her and she is extra pleased when they do. J

Tuesday we ran into two school age kids and their younger brother. All three wanted to pet her and Georgia was more than willing to accept. As soon as she gets her petting fill she is ready to get right back to the walk.

Georgia usually gets two short walks in the morning and one in the evening. In the morning, I will walk her before I leave for work and then my husband will walk her before he leaves. The length of Georgia’s morning walk is dependant on how much time I have before my carpool shows up. Today I was thinking “She is SO smart!” She knew she was getting the “short” version of the walk this morning because of the route I chose. With the shorter route we will usually stay pretty close to the house, so I can quickly get her back to the house. Every time we walked past the sidewalk to our front door she would walk on the boulevard side and “act” interested in the boulevard, because she didn’t want to end the walk yet. (I think she figured if she ignored the sidewalk to the house she could stay outside.) She is so smart!

Georgia had mixed emotions about this weekend. On one hand she got to spend a lot of time with Foster mom and dad, but on the other hand she also had to share her space with a new RAGOM puppy. We volunteered to take Nick 11-298 for two nights, (coming soon to the Available Dogs page), for the weekend until his permanent foster was back from holiday weekend.

We were a little unsure how Georgia would react to us bringing a 10 month old floppy puppy home to share her space. They met outside on a leash and Georgia gave Nick a vocal bark to tell him as to “Stay out of my face”. We then took them for a walk. On the walk she noticed quickly that he would sniff the same things she sniffed and wanted to chase the same squirrels too. He wasn’t so bad after all.

Georgia was a little on edge at first having a puppy around, but by the second day she was already initiating play with him in the back yard. We also took them for a long walk and they were walking so close to each other. Very cute! Of course having two dogs around left no room for us on the couch, but that was just fine.

After a little socialization we think Georgia was more sad than relieved to see Nick go. She can fully relax now, but I think she enjoyed showing him the ropes. Oh, we also noticed she drank more water with another dog around. Her “excessive” drinking, which was observed before she came here, could have possibly been a competitive reaction. J She is just the cutest! We really have enjoyed having her around.

Unfortunately, we did not get the camera in time to get a good video of Nick and Georgia playing, but we did get a couple pictures.

Friday, September 2, 2011

Since we have had Georgia we have been trying to find a "kibble" dog food which she likes enough that she will eat without adding anything. (ie, treats, water, pumpkin, etc) Needless to say all this switching around food made Georgia's stomach a bit upset. She didn’t seem to mind, because an upset stomach meant she got to have “special food”. She loves the special food, usually boiled hamburger and rice, but most recently we tried chicken, rice and carrots. You can see what this critic thought of the carrots, by the pictures.:-) Thankfully we finally found a kibble she loves and actually seems excited to eat!

Next time don't put these orange things in here!

Miss Georgia also got a bath today, I just had to share the pictures, she was so cute with her doggie fauxhawk! Afterwards she got a treat and couldn't wait to start to dig in to her bully stick.

Really?! Can you please put the camera down and rinse me?

Foster Mom please open the door, I want to eat this treat!

We are beginning to think Georgia is part "Lassie." I know you probably think I meant to say Collie, but you would be wrong. We actually suspect the actor dog who played the part of "Lassie" may be a relative. :-) She uses her "bark" for good not evil.

Georgia has been a very quiet dog, but when she needs something she can tell us and she does. We usually figure out what she is "telling" us by process of elimination. Sometimes we will get a few sighs or "silent barks" if we don't guess right the first time.

Tonight when I got home from work, I let her out to go potty. We then came in and she ate and I filled her water. She gracefully let me enjoy a meal, and then she was ready. It was time for the evening walk.

I caught her, on video, telling me what she wanted; she didn't care it was too hot outside. It was time for a walk! Click here to see how smart Georgia is.

Monday, August 29, 2011

We wanted to give Georgia a test drive for the upcoming Goldzilla walk in a few weeks. So we took her on a 1 hour walk this afternoon and her bouncing ears and super cute "horse" trot were full tilt most of the walk. She loved it. Even though the walk was a good long one, and she was tired when she got home, she was ready for a short walk again later in the evening after getting re-energized.

One cute thing we learned about Georgia since having her is she likes to be vocal about her needs with just a small, almost smiling, "woof" telling you what she needs. This message ranges from, "Let me out, I'm thirsty, I'm hungry, You're in my spot, Why aren't we in bed yet"!

If you would like to support Georgia and her 5k walk at Goldzilla you can visit our Team Hopkins web page at http://goldzilla.dojiggy.com/goldenteamhopkins. Both Georgia, RAGOM, and we appreciate your support.

We just wanted let you know Georgia has found a rival to her chew bones…ICE CREAM!!

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

We have been lucky to have the privilege to foster Georgia, and she seems to be enjoying her stint with us also.

We took Georgia to the vet yesterday, for her follow up and to get an idea of Georgia’s story. Miss Georgia is starting to be quite the expert at the vet. She lies right down on the floor and makes herself at home. J Since being with us she has not exhibited excessive drinking, which is the main reason she was thought to have Cushing’s Disease. After meeting with the vet yesterday and reviewing Georgia’s complete veterinary history, we have ruled out Cushing’s. We are very pleased by this news.

Because Georgia was originally thought to have Cushing’s Disease she was scheduled to have an Ultra Sound of her liver. The ultra sound showed one large mass and other smaller masses on her liver. The good news is the masses appear to be non-cancerous. We have also been faxed vet records from Georgia’s original boarding in Missouri where we found out a liver biopsy was performed. The biopsy there also ruled out cancer. After further examination by our local vet they have determined her age to be approx 9-10 years old. Because of Georgia’s age, and the riskiness of the surgery, we do not think it would be wise have surgery at this moment in time.

Georgia will continue to be a happy girl. We will keep an eye on her and see if she exhibits any signs of discomfort, but so far she has been a happy camper wanting to go on frequent short walks, chewing on her bones, and being near us. Each day she is feeling more and more at home. She has been a joy to have around and is a great supervisor.

Please contact your placement advisor if you think Georgia is the dog for you; she will learn your routine in no time!

Friday, August 19, 2011

We are seeing more and more of Georgia's personality this week. We think she is so funny. Miss Georgia has a follow-up vet appointment early next week, so send your positive vibes Georgia's way. We will report back with what we find out.

We took Georgia to the groomer's today and she did a great job. She looks so cute and is extra soft. I took Georgia for a walk after the visit to the groomer's; she sure LOVES her walks, Actually I shouldn't say she walks, because she really "trots." When she trots her ears will bounce and her tail will swish from side to side. I did get a video today, but I didn't think about getting the camera out soon enough, so you do not see her full-on trot. (Click here to see.)

We have found out Georgia is very observant and is a great supervisor. She especially likes to make sure we do things right while we are in the kitchen. We found out my husband and I have been doing a few things routinely, but the only reason we knew is because Georgia pointed it out. :-) She will give us a bark or two to say,"Hey, you don't usually do that." Needless to say we are trying to be less "routine" with her, so she doesn't get stuck in her ways.

Monday, August 15, 2011

Georgia has been with us for a week. She has warmed up to us and seems to be a pretty happy girl. I am sharing some more pictures of Georgia, since we caught her smiling a few times over the week. She is just so cute, I couldn't keep the pictures to myself.

We will submit another update when we are able to confirm her next vet appointment. We are hoping to get to the bottom of what is going on with Georgia. We are trying to fit the puzzle pieces together, to figure her out. Thanks for checking in on Georgia!

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

I just wanted to make sure to send quick update to all you Georgia fans! We wanted to thank Michelle, a wonderful RAGOM volunteer, for getting Georgia to the vet today. We are still waiting to confirm if she has Cushing's Disease; we will submit an update when we know more.

Thanks for checking in and enjoy the pictures. We think Georgia is part fox, just look at her tail. :-)

Oh my gosh, I couldn't wait to share this picture. I took Miss Georgia Brown to Bubbly Paws to get her squeaky clean and she made their Facebook page. Below is the picture they posted. She is so cute!

Sunday, August 7, 2011

It has been awhile since Georgia's last update. Unfortunately, Georgia's last Foster had a medical emergency and Georgia was taken to boarding. Fortunately for us she was available when we needed a new foster, so we sprung Georgia from boarding today.

Oh boy was she ready to go, she wanted nothing to do with a potty break, she just wanted to get in the car and go. :-) Miss Georgia Brown, as her last foster mom called her, was a great car rider. She made the trek from Blaine to Hopkins with no problems. She needed a little boost to help her into the car, but hopped out without any help.

What we have observed so far is she walks well on a leash and would love to be allowed to chase a squirrel. She was not bothered one bit by the two dogs barking at her on the walk we took. We found out she loves to help out in the kitchen; she even helped me load the dish washer.

This was a lucky day for Georgia and us. She seems like a sweetheart and we can't wait to find out more about her. Georgia is scheduled to visit the vet on Wednesday to confirm whether or not she has Cushings Disease. We will report back after we know more.
