Ginger (Romy 09-061)

Profile

Please welcome Romy aka Ginger to the safety of RAGOM. The shelter said she was a stray but we are finding that hard to believe as she knows some basic commands and loves people. The vet guessed her age at about 3 and said she was in great shape. She spent her first night in the kennel and after some panting and whining, she settled down.

She is a big girl, weighing in at 74 pounds but she is solid!! The vet said she could probably lose a little weight but not much. It is hard to see much golden in her at this time but I have a strong suspicion that she has been shaved and is making it hard to tell. From the side her face looks like a golden and her behavior is very "golden like".

Whatever she is, she is an absolute doll!!! She wants to be where you are and she loves to have her belly rubbed. If you allow it, she will be a lap dog!! She needs to learn a few manners with regards to jumping up on you and checking out the counters but is going to make someone a great companion!!

She came in our house and has been fine with the other dogs. She loves to sniff them but 2 of our dogs are "seniors" and don't really enjoy that. They let her know and she backed off for a while. She tried to play with our other foster, Brooklyn, 08-589, and Brooklyn acts like she wants to play but I think she is a little overwhelmed by Ginger's size since Ginger weighs twice as much as her.

I think she would love to have a fur brother or sister to keep her company and play with. She has become attached to my husband and had some anxiety issues when he left her behind to walk the other dogs. Noting destructive but whining and running back and forth to the door.

We have lots to learn about her but I think, at this time, that she would be best in a home without small children due to her size and energy. I don't think she has a mean bone in her body but could knock over a small child very easily. I think an active family might be good for her also as she is young and has lots of energy. She goes out on a tie out without any problem so I don't think a fence would be necessary but it would be nice so she could run around. But if you are willing to give this girl the exercise she needs, no fence would not be an issue.

We will keep you posted on her progress but if you would like to learn more about her, please contact RAGOM and we can talk.

We've finally made it official.

Ginger will be adopted by her foster family. She has been with us for nearly two years and fits in perfectly with us.

She still has issues when she sees another dog when on a leash, but the wonderful things about her make up for that a million times over.

At one point it was said that she shouldn't be around young children. I don't know what she might have experienced in the past, but she loves my 18 month old son like he is her own. I was nervous at first, but shortly after we brought him home I knew she was going to be fine. She will let him do anything. We watch to make sure that he is always respectful of her, but she just loves him no matter what. She jumps up to kiss him when we get home after a long day and she joins us in the morning to greet him when he wakes up and she is his favorite wrestling partner. I couldn't ask for a better dog when it comes to my son. He adores her.

She is a velcro dog that is always, always at my side. She plays well with our resident Toby and is friendly with the cats.

She enjoys running about 3 miles 4-5 times a week and spends the rest of her time playing with Toby or relaxing on our bed. She is a wonderful addition to our family.

She has made us very happy and I think she will be happy spending her golden years with us.

Romy/Ginger is doing very well. She recently completed her training at Bark, Snark, and Growl and did very well. By the last night of class she was able to run around with another dog off leash! This was in a controlled area and the other dog was very relaxed so it worked out well, but she didn't have a negative reaction at all! One thing that she proved to me is that she can be trained to handle situations with other dogs. It will take work, but she is capable with consistent training.

Ginger goes out for a few runs each week and does very well. She doesn't pull which is fantastic. She also doesn't pay attention to passerby. She does get upset when she sees another dog, but not nearly at the level she did prior to her training and my reinforcement can distract her from the other dog and keep her from losing control.

Ginger loves the baby and my 1 year old niece. I really don't know where she got the reputation of not being able to be around children because she hasn't shown me any reason for concern. The pictures are of my niece and Ginger. Ginger doesn't seem bothered a bit even with a child crawling on her!

Ginger is also very easily trained. We recently trained her to go potty on the rockbed instead of the grass so we don't end up with dead grass spots. It took a couple of days to reinforce but now she knows exactly where to go. Talk about a dream dog!

If you'd like to meet Ginger, please contact placement.

All is well with Romy/Ginger.

This sweet girl is patiently waiting for her forever home.

She needs a home where she will get a lot of love, an occassional walk or run, and no small dogs. We continue to learn about her needs the longer she is with us. For example, for a long time I thought she shouldn't be around cats. Romy lives with two cats in our home and she has been just fine with them. She was initially very curious about them but once she had the chance to sniff and say hello, now she pretty much leaves them alone.

Romy loves the new baby. All she wants to do is kiss him. Of course we try to keep this to a minimum but there are times when she plants one right across his face! It's pretty funny and she is proud of herself!

She is a very good girl and will make someone a great companion.

Good lovin'!

Romy/Ginger is doing great. She continues to be a very sweet girl and a perfect guest.

I've had success walking her in our neighborhood when other dogs are around. The secret so far has been to keep her on a very short leash and keep walking. She struggles a bit, but nothing I can't control with a short leash and she recovers quickly. Other than that, walking her is very pleasant. We are getting her enrolled in training to help with her leash aggression. I'll provide updates as to how she is doing after she starts.

My husband has taken her out running and she was super! She didn't pull at all, she was the perfect runner and absolutely LOVED it!

The picture below is after a hard playtime with our resident dog, Toby. They enjoy each other's company and play together very well. They need to take rest breaks because they tire out!

As I've said before, this girl is so sweet. She loves people and will be your very best friend!

Romy (who was renamed Ginger by her former owners) is now in her new foster home! She is approximately 4 years old and around 70 lbs. We officially began fostering her yesterday but she has been visiting our home for about a week now playing with our resident dog, Toby. Romy is a very sweet dog. She loves attention from humans and plays very well with her foster brother.

Romy was returned to RAGOM as a result of leash anxiety. She has trouble meeting other dogs while she is on a leash and can begin to show aggression in those instances. However, when she is off leash she does just fine with dogs. She has had the opportunity to meet our neighbor dogs and has been to socialized doggy day care and she has been perfect! Leash aggression is something we can work on.

What a wonderful dog! Romy is very sweet, eager to please and responds very well to commands. She knows sit, stay and leave it, possibly others that I have yet to discover. Her favorite thing is to be rubbed in the tummy.

She is said to not like toddlers hanging on her so she would probably do best in a home without young children.

What a love she is! She has been following me around constantly since she got here and I can tell she is still a little nervous in a brand new place, but she has been the perfect guest!

Just an update to let you know that Ginger (aka Romy) is on her way to her new foster home. As crowded as our house was.....we are going to miss her. It seems so quiet with her gone. She is a fantastic girl and someone is going to be very lucky to take her home!! She hitched a ride with another dog that was heading to North Dakota, Tobie. They met with lots of sniffs and got along just great! Ginger will be fostered in Burnsville, MN so if you are close and would like to meet her, let RAGOM know.

She got to spend her final night sleeping with dad in BED in the spare bedroom. She loved it and did not move a muscle. He said it was kind of like sleeping next to a brick wall as she wants to be next to you and will not move. But she would be a good electric blanket!

We wish you the best, sweet Ginger Snap, and will be following your updates!! You will be well taken care of by a great family until it is time to move to your forever home and hopefully your new forever family will keep us updated. Be a good girl and know that we love you!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that Romy, aka Ginger, will be going to a new foster home. This is not due to ANYTHING that she has done!! We volunteered to foster her temporarily so we could get her out of the overcrowded shelter she was in and save her from........well, you know what. She has been an awesome girl and we will miss her so much!! If it were not for our busy schedule the next few weeks and the fact that we have 2 residents dogs and one foster, Brooklyn, already, we would have gladly kept her until she got adopted. She is going to make someone very happy.

And she is still on the market!! The family that was interested in her and I talked and decided she might be best in a home without a toddler and a newborn. We have not been able to expose her to kids and I don't believe she would hurt them, but she is such a big strong girl (who is very food motivated) and could accidently knock down a small child. I think she would be fine with older kids and also think she would enjoy having a fur brother or sister to play with. We have not gotten to see her play much as our resident dogs are seniors and "fun haters". She and Brooklyn have played a little but when things get warmed up Brooklyn gets a little scared and then the "fun haters" come barging in to break it up.

I cannot stress enough how loving she is. The typical golden that loves to have their belly rubbed and be near their "people". She will need to be watched around the kitchen as sometimes her nose gets the best of her and she wants to check out the counters!!

Please contact RAGOM if you would like to know more about this sweet girl!!

Just a quick update and a couple pictures. Ginger continues to do very well with us. She has settled into the routine and is a great girl! She will need someone to work with her on checking out the counters but she is a smart dog and will learn quickly....but I would still keep things put away because even the best dog cannot resist all the time. She now lays down with the other dogs and has quit pacing and following us all over the house.

She still does not like the crate and her 3rd night here, she refused to leave the couch at bedtime....I told you she was smart!! After alot of coaxing we got her up to the crate and my husband thought it would be a good idea to leave her in the bedroom with the baby gate up. Well, that lasted about 5 seconds before she jumped over it and jumped in our bed. So, a baby gate will not do the trick with her!! I think once she settles into a home she would be fine left out but since our Chow mix is a real bear if he gets bumped while he is sleeping, it is best for her to be crated. Best for everyone's safety!!

We had one accident since she has been here so I don't know that she is totally housebroken. But with guidance and a good schedule, she will understand she has to go outside. That is the thing with a stray, you just don't know their past and if anyone took the time to train her.....

I talked to a very nice family today that is interested in her so we will be getting her evaluated around small children and cats. Last night while she was laying down I pulled her ears, her tail and her legs, played with her lips and eyes and got no reaction so I don't think children will be an issue. One would just have to be careful if she got to running around or if the child had food. As I said before, I don't think she has it in her to be mean.

We will keep you updated on her progress!

It is day 3 here at my foster home and I already get to use the computer!! This place rocks!

I get two walks a day so I can do my "business" and I love it. I pull some but am getting better about listening to FD when he tells me to slow down. I heard FM and FD saying that since my original update, they have decided it would be best for me to go to a home with a fence. They called me an "escape artist"....not sure what that is exactly but I think it has something to do with me getting out of my collar and then my harness. They say that is probably how I found myself at the shelter!! But hey, I didn't go anywhere and I came right to dad when he called me. No harm done!

FM was making cookies tonight and didn't appreciate the help I tried to give her. I just wanted to take a little taste to make sure the cookies where up to her standard...... So, I guess I need a family that will make sure and keep all the "good stuff" up high where I cannot reach it. Bummer!!

Did FM tell you about the dreaded crate? I didn't know what is was the first night so I ran right in it when they told me to.....big mistake. And when they wouldn't take me out after I put on my "poor pitiful me act", I went to sleep. Well let me tell you, I didn't fall for that again last night!! No siree!! I heard FM say it was like trying to move a freight train!! She was pushing and FD was pulling and I had the brakes ON!! They finally got the best of me and I was in. I tried a little panting and whining but not for long. Guess I better get used to it. My fur brother is 10 1/2 so he has seniority and gets to sleep with them at night. They KNOW that I will try to jump in the bed and my fur brother can be nasty when other dogs do that. So, the crate it is for now. But I did surprise FM when she was trying to sleep in this morning. I got up in bed with her and tried to snuggle under the covers with her. I knew a few kisses would do the trick, and I was right!!

Speaking of kisses..... I LOVE to give kisses. So, if you are interested in a female dog that is not your typical "girly girl" dog, who loves to give kisses and be by your side as much as possible.......I AM THE ONE FOR YOU!! Please call RAGOM and lets chat!!
