In Memory of Bruce Berntson

Bruce had a passion and love for Golden Retrievers. He loved his dogs, Bernie and Chica who had passed on some time ago but Bruce would often tell us stories about them. His son just recently shared a story how he remembers traveling to Utah with his dad (Bruce) and stopping at a McDonalds along the way for a burger. His dad took Bernie out for a walk and then they sat in the kids playground area outside and his son went and bought the food which included two hamburgers for Bernie. His dad sat Bernie at the table outside with the both of them and fed Bernie the hamburgers and fries. He said people gave them some looks and his dad just chuckled.

For all of us who knew Bruce, we can picture him doing this and just makes us laugh.

There is no doubt that Bruce is smiling down upon us and thrilled that we have selected this charity in his memory.

Thank you to all who contribute towards this charity in Bruce’s name and for all the good work this charity does. His family and friends sincerely appreciate it.

Hello Ragom! My name is Gracie and I am approximately 2 years of age. I was a stray that ended up in an Iowa shelter so we are not really sure my exact age, but we are thinking between 2-3 years of age. The people at the shelter loved me and were very sad to find out that I was heartworm positive. Because of the Immiticide shortage (that’s the drug that treats heartworms) they had nothing to treat me with so they made the fabulous decision to turn me over to RAGOM’s care so that I can begin to live the Golden life. I am a beautiful medium colored Golden with long feathering.  My coat is a little dry, but that will shape right up with some good nutrition.

I am housetrained, know sit and shake, and I am slowly working on being crate trained. I am completely fine once I am in the crate, but you have to lead me in there right now as I spent 2 months at a shelter so I would rather just not be in a kennel. I love to play fetch, but am still working on giving up the ball and I also like nylabones and destuffing soft toys. I am a medium energy Golden and will need to be exercised daily in my forever home.

I am currently around dogs from 30-100lbs and do well with all of them. I love to play, but I am the submissive type and will back down when I am told enough is enough.  I am interested in cats, but have done well with the two that live in my foster home. I love people and I love attention just like any other Golden. I  have not shown any aggression or anxiety since being in my foster home and am a really easy girl to have around. My only fault so far is I can be a runner if I get out. I have gotten away from foster dad once and foster mom once and had fun running around the neighborhood while they chased me. I would probably do best with a fence but right now I have a tie out and do great with that as long as I don’t slip through the door.  I do well when riding in the car and have been walking well on the gentle leader every day.  All around I am one great Golden girl and cannot wait to find the perfect forever home!

Miss Grace is doing very well!  She is starting to have a little more energy and we can tell she is feeling a lot better.  She will have her 30 day recheck this week, and if all goes as planned, she will be off her exercise restriction.  She has been absolutely wonderful throughout her treatment.  We had a rough few days at first, but she’s done really well since then.  Grace has lost a little weight and muscle, but once she starts going on walks she’ll be able to build up her muscles again.  She hasn’t been on a walk in a month, so it’s understandable that she doesn’t have the muscle mass of a dog who gets regular exercise.

Grace is one of the sweetest and most loving dogs I’ve ever fostered.  She loves to curl up next to me on the couch and place her head in my lap.  She’s been the perfect guest; not a single accident or chewed up item.  Grace loves car rides, comfy dog beds, sleeping on the couch, and stuffed toys.

Grace will be having a very special visitor this weekend!  Not having Grace in our home anymore is going to be very difficult, but we know that we did our part to get her through her heartworm treatment and recovery.  She is now ready to go to her forever home and live the Golden life.  We’ll update after the meeting to let you know how it went!

Grace is feeling a little better and starting to act more like herself.  She is no longer too painful and sore to jump on the couch, so she’s been spending most of her time curled up sleeping on the couch.  A few times she’s gone through her toy box looking for the perfect toy to cuddle with, which we think means she’s feeling better!  She has not been coughing at all, which is a good sign.  When the heartworms die and break down they travel to the lungs and can cause coughing (among other things.)  My 7 year old daughter has spent a lot of time sitting next to Grace and reading stories to her.  Grace loves the attention and is a great reading buddy.  My daughter also wrote Grace a letter at school.  I have included a picture of it, as it was too cute not to share!

She is now back to eating her regular food with a little canned food mixed in.  The Prednisone steroid that she is taking is helping her appetite, which is good since she lost 5 pounds since she got her treatment.  She is almost done with her medications.  The Doxycycline (antibiotic) will be done this week, and the Prednisone (steroid) is being tapered down this week, with our goal of her being off it by next Monday.  She has been completely off of her pain medication since last Tuesday and has done very well.  Though she was very good about taking her medications, it will be nice not to have to give her medications anymore.  At one point, she was getting 15 pills per day!  (6 Doxycycline, 8 Tramadol, and 1 Prednisone, spread out throughout the day.)  I would just put them in a pill pocket, and she would gobble it right up.

Last week we had a morning snow storm, and little miss Grace was excited!  It’s a good thing I had her on a leash outside, as she wanted to RUN and play in the snow!  Instead, she frolicked around as much as she could on the short leash and ate as much snow as she could get in her mouth.  We only spent a few minutes outside, but she loved it.  I was able to snap a good picture of her once she came inside with snow still on her coat.  She was trying to lick the snow off her nose.  She’s such a silly girl!

In all honesty, it hasn’t been too difficult to restrict her activity most of the time.  She’s completely content curled up on the couch or oversized chair.  She prefers a blanket to sleep on, and a pillow to put her head on is an added bonus, but she’s not too picky.  (It’s so hard not to spoil her!)  Even before treatment she was a pretty mellow dog, and I think she will continue to be calm and easy-going once she is completely recovered.  I have been crating her during the day to keep her quiet, but this week I am going to gate her in my bedroom while I’m at work.  She isn’t able to jump up on my bed, so she’ll just be able to sleep on the dog bed on the floor or the chair in my room.  I would trust her with free roam while I’m at work all day if I didn’t need to restrict her activity.  Though she would probably sleep on the couch all day, I can’t be sure she wouldn’t try to run around, which would not be good for her recovery.

Grace has someone who is very interested in her and will be meeting her once she is feeling a little better.  We’ve decided to push back the meeting until she’s recovered a little more, since Grace gets excited when she meets new people and when people come over, and we need her to stay as calm as possible.  She sent Grace a giant teddy bear, which Grace loves to sleep with (and she’ll occasionally try to de-stuff it!)

Remember that November 16 is Give to the Max Day!  Go to RAGOM’s website, click on the link, and make a donation.  You can chose to make a donation in Gracie’s name, or any other RAGOM dog that has stolen your heart.  RAGOM couldn’t do what they do without your support, and there are so many dogs that are in need of basic or advanced medical care.  Your donation is greatly appreciated!

Grace continues to be a trooper and is more alert then she has been the last few days.  I got her to eat some canned food the first night after treatment, but she has refused to eat much of anything since then.  She has also developed diarrhea, so I made her some boiled ground beef and rice today, which she promptly refused to eat.  She did seem interested in my plain yogurt, so I added a few spoonfuls of that on top of the hamburger/rice mixture and she did eat a few bites.  Grace rested on her favorite dog bed most of the day, and actually wagged her tail this evening.  Even our kitties have taken pity on Grace.  I caught both of them curled up sleeping with her this morning, and when they aren’t sleeping on the bed they will be sitting next to it.  Our sweet Grace has everyone worried about her.  We will continue to give Grace everything she needs and spoil her while she’s sick.

Grace has gone through her first day of treatment for heartworms.  She received her first injection Tuesday morning, and stayed at the vet’s office for the day.  Around 30% of dogs experience injection site swelling, redness, and pain.  Unfortunately, Grace is one of those 30%.  She was given pain medications and a steroid.  She wasn’t very interested in dinner, but I was able to get her to eat a small amount of canned food with her medications in it.  Luckily, I had stocked up on a few different types of canned food in case she decided to be a picky eater.  I added a few soft blankets to her favorite spot on the couch and she’s been resting ever since.  She’s pretty miserable, but I am doing everything I can to make her as comfortable as possible.

On Wednesday morning she will go in for her second injection.  She will stay on the steroids and pain medication for at least a week, then we will re-access.

Grace is a prime example of how important it is to give heartworm prevention.  The treatment of heartworms is not without risk, is painful for the dog, and is also very expensive.  We want to thank RAGOM for offering Grace a second chance at life and getting her the treatment she so desperately needs.

Sweet Grace had a wonderful Halloween!  She dressed up as a bumblebee, and enjoyed handing out candy.  We did take her trick-or-treating to a few neighboring houses, then returned home.  Everyone loved her and commented on how adorable she was!  (Which, of course, we already knew!)  She saw a Dalmation dog statue and was so excited, we think that she thought it was a real dog!

More updates to come, I just wanted to share a few of the adorable pictures from Halloween!

Gracie had her vet consultation last week and we will start her Heartworm treatment on November 1st.  She will go in on Tuesday morning to receive her first injection and she will stay at the vet’s office during the day to make sure she doesn’t have any problems.  Since I’m a vet tech, the vet is letting me take her home Tuesday night, instead of keeping her overnight like they typically do.  I will take her back Wednesday morning for her second injection and observation during the day.  She will again be allowed to go home in the afternoon.  After that, it is STRICT cage rest for Miss Grace and leashed trips outside to do her business.  We need to keep her calm and let her body work to get rid of the dead heartworms.  She will also be on another month of Doxycycline (an antibiotic) and a pain medication, as the injections can cause swelling and pain at the injection site.

Gracie has made herself at home and has been the perfect houseguest!  We have fallen madly in love with her.  She is such a sweet, easygoing, and loving dog.  Her favorite thing to do is curl up on the couch (especially if someone is sitting on the couch.)  She is crated when we are gone, but only to keep her quiet.  I think she would do fine having free roam.   Gracie loves everyone/everything… cats, kids, dogs, you name it!  I do think she would enjoy being an only dog, simply because she would love to be the center of attention.  She would also do great with another mellow dog that wouldn’t be overly dominant with her.  Sweet Gracie is a submissive girl and will let other dogs run the show.  We are dog sitting 2 Scottish Terriers this weekend and Gracie plays well with them, but lets them rule the house.  I think she’ll be happy when they go home today and she has her house/FM/couch back.

We’ve stocked up on new cuddle toys, chew toys, and a new, comfy bed for Gracie since she will be on strict cage rest for 4 weeks following her treatment.  She is so mellow in the house that I don’t think it’s going to be very hard to keep her quiet.  She will be kept on a leash outside, so she’s not able to do hot laps in the backyard.  We are hopeful that she gets through the Heartworm treatment without any major difficulties and will be able to find her forever home who will love her and spoil her as much as we do!

Miss Gracie has been in our home for 1 week and has been doing great!  She is very sweet and she’s been the perfect houseguest.  She got to spend a few days with Jack 11-075 before he was adopted.  They got along great, and we think she would love to have another dog in her forever home.  We have two cats, and Gracie does not bother them.  Gracie also does well with my 7 year old daughter, though she does try to steal her stuffed animals if my daughter forgets to shut her bedroom door.  She has not had any accidents in the house, so I would say she’s completely housebroken.  We do crate her while we are gone for the day, mainly because she needs to stay quiet.  Otherwise I would trust her to be out, as long as everything was picked up.

Gracie attended the Great Iowa Pet Expo on 10/15 and had a great time.  She met so many people and loved everyone!  She rode very well for the two hour car ride and was very well behaved around all of the dogs, people, llamas, and cats!

We received wonderful news this week!  Gracie’s RAGOM vet was able to get some Immeticide (the HW treatment) so she will start treatment soon.  We originally thought it could be months before treatment was available, so we are very happy and thankful that we were able to get it so soon!  She’s already had x-rays and blood work done, and next week we will meet with the vet to set up a plan for Gracie’s treatment.  After talking with several vets, we think that Gracie is closer to 5-6 years old than 2-3.  She has slight graying around her eyes and on her muzzle, and based on the condition of her teeth they are guessing her to be older than estimated by the shelter staff.

We will continue to update on her treatment and progress.  Gracie wants to send out a huge THANK YOU to RAGOM for rescuing her and getting her the medical treatment she so desperately needs.

We also want to say THANK YOU to those who sponsored Gracie in memory of Bruce Berntson.  RAGOM would not be able to provide treatment to wonderful dogs like Gracie without amazing sponsors and donators like you.  We appreciate it more than words can describe!
