Greta had her spay surgery over two weeks ago and she is healing well. She is ready to start looking for her forever home. Here is what we think is really important (in addition to a fenced-in yard) for Greta’s future home:

• A resident dog who is playful and social. Greta really loves other dogs and her tail is wagging in happiness when she gets to play with others (she is the back dog in the picture of two dogs cuddling below). I will post a video of her playing outside with our resident dogs in the near future.

• A patient family. Greta is very sweet and she loves other dogs. She is still learning to trust people and is a little timid. She does come up to us for pets, but that took awhile. She does like to spend time in her safe places - under our desks and in a corner in our family room.

• A family willing to do training over time. Greta is not treat motivated yet (she will not take treats from our hands), so basic obedience training will take some time. But she does not jump up on people and is pretty calm in the house. She also needs to learn how to walk better on a leash. We have switched her to a harness and that seems to be more comfortable for her. So, we will continue working on this, too.

Greta attended a Meet and Greet in Woodbury this weekend. There were a lot of dogs there from RAGOM and from other rescues and she did great. She loved meeting all the dogs and would strain to get to smell and greet them (and she really does like to smell other dogs!).

She also retreated and took naps with her RAGOM buddies. She was gentle and appropriate meeting all the humans and dogs and did not shy away from all the pets she got.

We are working on helping Greta have a sign for going outside to relieve herself. I am trying bell training and am not quite sure if it is working or not, but she comes when she hears it. I haven’t done bell training before, so I have a few things to learn about it too.

She hasn’t had an accident for over a week. She has had only a few accidents in her month here and all but one of these were right after her spay surgery, but I feel that she was a bit disoriented then. 

Greta is now sleeping in our bedroom on the floor or a dog bed with our other dogs at night. She started out in the crate at night while everyone got to know each other. She does eat in her crate and she is crated when we leave the house and that seems to be going fine.  

She spends much of her day at our feet under one of our desks. So, she would like someone who is home part or much of the day. We continue to work on crate training and believe it is important for her to feel safe there, and we think she does.

Greta is a sweet and gentle soul. She will make a great addition for the right family!
