Hal has gone to his forever home and is joining Stevie, another RAGOM pup adopted by his new family. He has settled in quickly and loves sitting under his new Mom's desk as she works.

Hal is a male 1½ year old pure bred Golden. Hal came from a breeder where he was used as a stud and has had very little socialization, or what we would call a normal dog life so far.

Hal arrived very scared, shy and confused by things such as stairs, doorways or being loved on. He has learned fast, however, and is now a cuddle monster!

He is a very gentle boy, who now wants to be next to his humans – his favorite spot is under my desk when I am working. He also likes to gather dog toys, mittens or shoes and hoard them on his dog bed.

Hal is not so much a chewer as a hoarder. In the short time we have had him, he already comes when called, mainly because he knows he will get love. He is not as food motivated as he is attention motivated.

He enjoys going on walks, but needs another dog with him for confidence. He is so excited and happy that he bounces rather than walks!

House training is still in process. He does his business as soon as we get outside, but has had a couple of accidents. I see this as more my error on missing his ques – he is learning and does want to please.

Hal has fungal and bacterial infections in both ears and is getting treatment. It seems to be working well – his ear itching has lessened and they smell and look much better. He is underweight and lacks the muscle tone you would normally see on a 1½ year old, but that will correct itself with time.

The poor guy is also being treated for a UTI, but that will also be resolved in the near future. He has not yet been neutered but I expect that to be scheduled in the next week.

From a behavior perspective Hal is gentle and loving. He does not show signs of food or toy aggression with people or other dogs. He does react (retreats to safe spot) to loud noises and new things/experiences that frighten him.

For example, my daughter came over with a large zebra striped bag, and for some reason he was quite afraid of it. Why – who knows? But with gentle coaching and reassurance he sniffed it and then was fine.

Hal will do best with positive reinforcement and training, as any negative scolding might send him backwards into a fearful state.,

Hal has been around a variety of new people and does well. Initially he is a bit apprehensive of men but does warm up to them. He has not been exposed to young children or cats.

Hal should be in a home with another dog for confidence. He will do best with a family who sees a dog as an integral part of their family, and has patience to help him learn. Activities such as daily walks are also important, as well as a fenced yard.
