Hank IA 07-494

Profile

Meet Hank, a beautiful, 10 month old male.  Hank came to RAGOM from a shelter, where he was surrendered by his owner.  Hank previously lived on a farm where he was given free roam.  Apparently he roamed a little too far, and the owner decided to surrender him to the shelter.

Because Hank grew up wandering around on a farm, he wasn't given training or obedience, so he has some behaviors to work on.  For example, Hank wants to jump up on anyone, any dog, anything.  We are slowly (I hope) breaking this habit, but it seems like he's been used to doing this for quite awhile.  Hank is also slowly learning the "sit" command.

It is especially important for Hank to learn good doggie manners, because Hank is ENORMOUS!  Hank is 88lbs, but pretty skinny, in fact we can see his ribs from certain angles.  Most of Hank's weight must be in his legs because he is a very, very tall boy.  We think of him as a gentle ( and jumpy) giant!

Right now, we've only had Hank for a little over 24 hours, so it's hard to tell what his energy level is like.  So far he's been extremely energetic, however after spending who knows how long in a shelter, and boarding after that...it's normal for any dog to have a few days worth of pent up energy.  Two days from now we should have a better idea of what his true energy requirements are.

Last night Hank went on his first walk, and despite being very unhappy about the Gentle Leader, he did pretty well over all.  Once he is a little more comfortable with the Gentle Leader, it should be fairly easy to walk him.  Hank has spent most of the past 24 hours playing with our resident Goldens, who are 14 months and 10 months old.  Hank was very well behaved meeting both of them.  He met some cats in a cage at the vet's today, and was very curious, but backed away quickly when one of the kittens swatted at him.  At the vet's, we found out that Hank has roundworms, so he's had his first dose of medicine, and will need a follow up dose again in 2 weeks.  Other than that, Hank's exam went very well, in fact he even gave the vet a smooch!  The vet said that you will see the coloration that Hank has in Goldens from time to time (light colored eyes, and pink lips, mouth and eyes) but other than disqualifying Hank as a show dog, it doesn't change anything about him...he's still all Golden!

I couldn't end Hank's first bio without mentioning how very sweet Hank is.  Hank obviously loves and wants human attention and affection, but he just isn't sure what he needs to do to hear "good boy Hank!"  He's slowly learning that being calm and sitting earns praise.  Yesterday while our two residents were rolling around on the floor, sharing a toy, Hank sat looking at them...trying to figure out how to join.  Hank is no stranger to playing, but it's obvious he doesn't know what fetch, or toys in general are.  He seems to still be getting the hang of being petted, but I have no doubt that he likes what he's seeing about this affection thing.

Hank slept in a crate in our bedroom last night and did very well.  He hasn't had any accidents inside, so we're pretty comfortable saying he's house broken.  Although Hank hasn't chewed on any toys, just this morning he's been working away on some bones around the house, so hopefully we can introduce him to a whole new world of chewing wonders!

Hank is going to need a home that is willing to teach him all the best manners, and give him adequate exercise.  He will repay any home with love and adoration, and promises that all the work will be worth it...and we agree!!

Hank continues to make progress every day! Last night Hank went on a walk with the other two dogs, and towards the end of the walk, Hank and I decided to do an extra block by ourselves...while the other dogs went home. I don't know whether it was Hank being on the last lap of the walk and being more tired that usual (although I don't think he was all that tired), but that last block was the most enjoyable walk I've ever been on with a dog before. Hank slowed down his pace, walked right beside me, and the whole time the leash was very loose. There were only a few times that the leash extended all the way, but Hank never pulled...and he would come right back to my side immediately. If with other dogs on a walk, Hank does best when he's allowed to walk right next to the dogs. He (like my dogs) doesn't really like being behind the others. So although I was going to report that Hank is doing much better on walks, last night's event really stood out as the best he's ever done!

This discovery only highlights what we've already learned about Hank, which is he is a very, very good boy. He is obviously over the moon happy about being with a family that loves him. Hank is a big teddy bear, and just wants to love and be loved. Hank is the most loyal guy, and more than any of the other dogs...Hank is the one who follows me around the house. He really is just a big softy.

I've also decided that Hank does NOT have a really high energy level. Hank is still learning the appropriate ways to interact with dogs and humans. Initially, he apparently thought that interacting meant bounding around like a big frog. However, now that he's learning more manners, his "high energy" moments seem further and further apart. I think Hank actually has a pretty average energy requirement.

Another new development is that Hank is currently living with a puppy. This has been challenging for Hank, as sharing the human's attention with an adorable puppy is probably not Hank's idea of a good time. Hank would be happy getting all the attention, but we're practicing how to "share" foster mom and dad's attention with the other dogs. He does occassionally try to play with the puppy, but with the huge size difference, it hasn't really gotten to full out play. However Hank doesn't squash him, step on him...or otherwise dominate him with his size, so that has been nice!

Hank went on a playdate a few days ago to another foster's house. Hank got to hang out with some kids, and run around their backyard playing with their resident dogs. They reported that he did a great job, we were so proud! I'm enclosing some new pictures of Hank. I know that the end of August is a busy time for a lot of families, however I want to say this about Hank. Hank has the biggest heart of Gold you could imagine. The family that adopts Hank will have a best friend, companion, and fiercely loyal baby for the rest of their life. There is nothing I would change about Hank...I feel very blessed to have been given this time to spend with him. He is a truly amazing and wonderful dog.

I am pleased to say that Hank continues to learn how to behave everyday!  He is doing MUCH better at being calm, and the jumping has really gone down to only a few times a day.  He is really improving on his excitement level when he gets out of his kennel, and although he is very excited to see his people, he is doing very well at keeping all four paws on the floor!

Hank had a big milestone today...today was the first time ever that Hank has played with a toy!  While the other two dogs were playing fetch in the backyard, Hank must have gotten a wild hair, and decided to go after one of the balls.  After that, Hank would go fetch a ball here and there...but throwing it long distances didn't keep his attention.  Therefore...we started throwing the tennis ball straight up in the air, and Hank had a good time jumping up, trying to catch the ball in his mouth...and then pouncing on the ball if he missed.  It was a very big milestone for Hank, and hopefully this will be the beginning of a very short journey of learning the joy of toys!

Yesterday, Hank and his two buddies got to go on walks at two different trails, for a combined distance of 5 miles!  Hank still gives the Gentle Leader a test tug every so often, but he is overall very easy to walk.  We discovered that Hank loves water!  The dogs were able to walk around in a shallow creek, and Hank was the only one who pushed his whole head underwater!  He really seemed to enjoy being in the water.

We have really grown found of Hank in the short time he's been with us.  Hank is the sweetest, most loving dog anyone could ever hope for.  He looks at you with the most soulful look, as if he's trying to figure out..."is it true, do you really love me?"  Sometimes we just have to laugh...because for as HUGE as he is, he really is just a baby.   It is obvious that this "home" idea...is all very new to him.  So his days are filled with learning important lessons about house rules and proper dog behavior.  Even though Hank still has some things left to work on, it really is amazing how far he's come in less than a week.  He's a great big, lovable lug, and someone who's not afraid of working with him, will find the dog of their dreams in Hank.

Hank may be giant, but he's a very young boy who is excited about the idea that a family might think that he's special, and invite them to be part of their home.  If you think Hank might be the dog for you, please contact your placement advisor.
