We have welcomed Shadow 11-268 into our home!!  He was born 1/3/11 and is ½ golden retriever and ½ black lab.  His siblings, Knight 11-241, Coal 11-207, Jet 11-208 and Onyx 11-209 came into RAGOM this summer and were quickly adopted out. I honestly can’t say enough positive things about Shadow and literally can’t come up with anything bad.  Shadow is such a loveable boy and can’t wait to great you with a puppy kiss and wiggle his body into you for all the attention he can get.  He is so full of love and is ready to be with a forever family to receive that endless love back.

Shadow came to us on Sunday and greeted our resident dog with no problems.  He has said “hi” to our neighbor’s dogs through the fence with no issues as well.  He is mellow for being a puppy, but does have the puppy spunk in him of wanting to play.  He will benefit from having a fenced in yard to run in and would love an active home to get the puppy energy out of him.  I would not recommend young kids in the home due to his size and age.  He does occasionally jump up on people and he does like to push his body into you when he comes for attention which would knock kids down.  I’m not too familiar with his background and am not sure if he was an inside or outside dog, but he has no problems with being in the house and enjoying the luxuries!  Shadow happily hops up on couches and beds, but will listen if you tell him “off”.  We have crated him at night and while at work with little protest.  He has been clean in the kennel and has not had any accidents in the house.  He didn’t seem to know about toys right away, but he has found his favorite rope toy and tennis ball along with all of my resident dog’s toys!  There have been no problems with him chewing on things he shouldn’t.  Our resident dog is a chewer, so our house is pretty well chew proof!  Obedience classes would be incredibly beneficial for Shadow and a great bonding experience for both you and him.  You will be happy to know he is very food motivated and learns incredibly quickly!  He knows come, sit, stay, off, and get back that we know of right now.  He does pull on a leash and he’s been learning how to walk on the gentle leader.  However, that will take a little bit more work because he is not happy with wearing it.  Shadow would do well in a house with a dog that is well behaved as he has completely mimicked my resident dogs behaviors.  If she goes into a room, so does he.  If she sits for a treat, so does he.  Shadow loves attention and would do well in a house with no dogs as well.  He has not been around cats, but based on what I’ve seen so far I doubt there would be any issues if you have a cat.

Shadow was a brave boy at the vet Monday and loved the cheese on the stick and “cookies” they used to distract him while getting his shots.  He weighed in at 46 lbs after the rug was placed on the scale since the metal was too slippery and scary.  He does cower sometimes and sort of backs off if you go to grab him for something he’s not sure of.  Shadow was itching like crazy on Sunday with skin flaking off his back and even some hair missing around his rear end.  The vet did skin scrapes for mites and checked him for fleas, but didn’t find either.  She thinks he may have had fleas and that this is an allergic reaction to them.  He was given a topical treatment and some antibiotics to take over the next few weeks to clear up some red spots.  Thankfully, his itching decreased tremendously shortly after leaving the vet.  Shadow does need to be neutered before going to his furever family and we’ll be scheduling his appointment shortly.

Check back soon for updates as we get to know this terrific boy better and let your placement advisor know if you are interested in meeting him.  Due to not being fixed he will not be at Goldzilla.

Updates

Monday, October 3, 2011

I want to update everyone on this adorable boy!  Shadow is more of a velcro dog and wants to be in the same room you’re in.  He likes to play with a toy on your lap and will crawl up on the couch and snuggle with you.   He is so excited when you come home that he puts his body into so you give him lots of love.  If he wants your attention he’ll even paw at you a little to get it!

We’ve had a lot of fun with Shadow the last few weeks and have seen progress in him every day.  He will jump up on you now and then when he’s really excited, but he’s a puppy and is learning really quickly.  He’s still doing well with come and sit.  He’ll lay down on command with a treat and we’re also working on shake.  Shadow likes going for walks and seeing everything in the neighborhood.  He’s doing terrific on the gentle leader!  I’m able to take both the dogs for a walk and have them on the same side of me with both leashes in one hand.

Shadow is still leery of some men the first time he meets them.  We’ve given some guys a treat to give Shadow and he warms up instantly then!  He doesn’t growl and has never snapped at anyone.  He only barks, goes up to the guy in curiosity and backs off a few feet to bark again.  It has only lasted about 2 minutes at the most and then he acts like he’s known the guy forever.

We had to cancel Shadow’s surgery to have him fixed last week, but he is re-scheduled for October 12 and will then be ready to go to his forever family. He’s not golden in color, but he has the golden heart!  He’s had so many compliments on his looks and his eyes will definitely make you melt.  He’s waiting patiently to meet his family.

Hi Everyone!  Shadow here, giving you an update while mom’s not looking!  I’ve settled into a routine here at my foster parent’s house and am loving playing with the resident dog.  I am literally following Zayla around like a Shadow and enjoy playing tug of war with her!  Everyone keeps telling me I have the most beautiful eyes.

We had a fun weekend at the foster grandparent’s lake house.  I had my first accident before we left and then another after we got there.  Oops.  I was shaking like a leaf when we first got there and didn’t know what to think of the foster grandparents.  I warmed up to grandma quickly, but grandpa was a little scarier and I was skittish around him the first night.  When we woke up Saturday, I didn’t have any problems with grandpa and loved riding on the pontoon.  My foster parents caught a couple fish that they let me smell even.  Zayla went swimming, but I wasn’t going to jump into the lake yet.  I wanted to go to the beach, but Sunday was raining and we didn’t have a chance to see if I could swim.  I did get a bath on Sunday when we got home and loved prancing around afterwards showing off my beautiful coat!

I’ve been having fun chewing up toys and trying out counter surfing.  It’s fun when there’s a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or leftovers in my reach.  Foster dad hasn’t learned I’m taller than his resident dog yet!  I’m enjoying walks and think the gentle leader is annoying, but I’m getting used to it.

Guess what!  I’m going to be fixed on September 29th and will be available for my furever home shortly after!  Are you ready for my puppy kisses and energy!?
