Little Miss Hannah arrived into town from SD this weekend. This sweet, very petite purebred golden girl is a now-retired mama of many pups. Hannah is only 5 years old, and looks more like she could be 1 or 2 because of her little frame and dainty features. Hannah even has that cute, coal black nose that normally fades after the first couple of years. Rich reddish fur, tiny paws, innocent little face, and big eyes...oh so sweet! Hannah weighed in at a whopping 46.5 lbs today - she could stand to gain a few but she is not too far off for her size.
Hannah is a very shy, scared little girl who has not spent a lot of time being socialized or learning about things like leashes. In fact, Hannah decided to prove how scared she could get this weekend by getting spooked while outside on her leash, breaking my grip on her, and RUN, RUN, RUNNING through the wheat fields like she had never run before. I think she just wanted to see how far I could chase after her before I passed out or had a heart attack. Hannah has not learned yet that we unfamiliar people just want to love her and protect her, so all she could think to do when she realized she was free was to just keep running. After a few days of searching for this frightened girl, worrying about where she could be and when we would find her, she appeared! Well, actually, our neighbors reported hearing some howling in the woods nearby, so we went to search that area - in the dark - and of course, she quit her howling when she heard us coming. We searched until 11:30pm with flashlights, canoes, waders,...(by any means necessary of course), but it wasn't until the next morning, when we got up as soon as the sun rose, that we found her. Poor Hannah, who had slipped away from me w/her leash attached, had become all tangled in the brush and couldn't free herself. Her leash was wrapped around her neck, but we were able to free her and she came through her GREAT ADVENTURE with just an icky eye infection, some bruising around her neck where the leash was wound, and an ear infection.
Our feelings of joy at the moment we were able to find Hannah can not be expressed in words - she is one lucky dog.
We brought Hannah to the vet, had a quick check done, and decided she only needed some eye ointment, ear meds and a little Rimadyl for any pain in her ears and eyes. She goes back to the vet tomorrow to get all vacs UTD, and have her bloodwork done. Hannah even tried to nuzzle up to my face in the car on the way to the vet, which was very surprising because she didn't want to get close at all before she ran. It was like she was saying "thanks lady that I don't know yet, I am so happy to be free of that leash and I know you will take care of me now."
Her first day home after the great adventure, and Hannah has eaten 3 hotdogs, some grilled chicken, and then boiled turkey and rice for supper! She was one hungry little girl. Now, if we could just get her to, ahem, get rid of it. :) She has not relieved herself (either way) at our house since she arrived. We are working to get her comfortable with the dog run, and maybe she will be able to use that soon.
Hannah needs to stay on a slip collar leash for now, (she was on this when she took off, too), and probably will be tethered right to our waists until we are able to build more trust with her and put her at ease with being on leash. Tonight, though, she is fast asleep in her crate, her safe place in this unfamiliar house. She seems very content. Oh, and she was nervous when we gave her a bath tonight, but after a while, she laid down on her side and shut her eyes while we scrubbed away. She even raised her back leg up so we could rub her belly - I think she decided that doggy spas are the best ever!
We are all going to sleep happy tonight. Can't wait see this sweet angel girl come out of her shy shell.I just know she is going to be the biggest love - she has already won our hearts for sure.
