Henry 07-379

Profile

Say hello to RAGOM's newest little cutie patootie, Henry. Henry was left at a public dropoff for the humane society in the Black Hills of South Dakota, so we don't know anything about his history. He is a darling, young (approx. 1 year old), energetic boy, who seems as if he must have lived in a house before. He knows how to sit, knew how to do stairs right away, jumped right up on the couch, and basically made himself at home. I'm not sure yet if he's completely potty-trained or not. He had an accident last night shortly after he arrived, but the first night doesn't count since new fosters are always out of sorts, and he also drank a lot of water after the long car ride. Today he's been going out with my 2 Golden boys and seems to know to take care of business outside.

Henry has done fine with my two dogs, but definitely prefers squeaky toys, tennis balls, and me, to playing with other dogs at this point. My 7 month old is relentless though, and may get him playing yet. Henry's two favorite past-times are eating, and trying to put as many toys in his mouth at one time as he possibly can. His record is three, but he's going for four. So far he doesn't seem to be a "master destroyer" like my young guy, but rather seems to think it's exciting enough just to carry his prized possessions around, squeaking away.

Speaking of eating, it's a good thing this boy enjoys it so much! He's pretty underweight at only 41 lbs, so we'll enjoy putting some meat on his bones. He has eagerly gobbled down all food and treats, with gusto! Henry had a vet appointment tonight, and she thought he should gain 10-15 lbs, so he'll always be a pretty small guy, under 60 lbs unless he's not done growing. Other than his weight, Henry got a clean bill of health. His teeth are pearly white, and no ear infections! He is now up-to-date on shots, was micro-chipped, and had his heartworm test. We'll get those results tomorrow, and if all is well, he'll be neutered on Wednesday. More soon on Henry, the little "pretty boy" that the shelter told us was a girl. He came in with the name of "Honey", which we quickly switched to Henry, although both have proven to be fitting. He is also quite a honey.

Dear RAGOM,

We are so sad to say goodbye to our dear Henry (#07-379), especially now during this Pandemic when we all need to comfort each other. On December 8th, 2020 we made the decision to let him travel over the Rainbow Bridge.

Though he was still up for his occational toy and short strolls around the yard, he was just so very tired and in crippling orthropedic pain. We helped him get up to move throughout the day, but even with medications, he was suffering and panting so hard.  It was difficult to see him continue to suffer and pant so hard.

Henry had been left at a drop-off Humane Society in Rapid City, South Dakota. RAGOM picked him up and brought him here to the Twin Cities.

His foster mom (Jen F.) posted an enticing description of him on the RAGOM site, plus his photo just said "I'm the one". Henry's previous name was Honey until Jen discovered he was a male and renamed him; but actually, he lived up to both names. He was our "Honey Boy"!

He was very underweight when we brought him home. That first night after his bowl was empty, he watched us preparing Fahitas for our dinner. The plates were filled and set on the table and when we turned our backs, he pulled that Mexican food right off the plate without disturbing the place setting one bit!  What a guy!

Henry proved to be a real true Golden. He loved his whole family but was like "velcro" with his human mom. He was always interested in everything you were doing and every shopping bag you brought home. He didn't miss a thing! When a neighbor planted a new pine tree, he stood in the yard barking and glaring at it just to make sure it wasn't a threat to us.

He loved his walks in the park, his squishy toys, tennis balls, boat rides and a really good bowl of food. We grew old together with Henry and miss him so much now! Some day I know we'll be able to play together again.

From Henry's forever family...

Hello RAGOM,

Henry was originally "Honey" until his F/M discovered he was a boy. He was dropped off at a Humane Society site in Rapid City, South Dakota, before RAGOM rescued him and brought him to Minnesota.

We always had family dogs while our children were growing up. When we finally had an "empty nest" and our last dog passed away, we said that we were not going to have another dog. We went a whole year without a companion and then my husband retired. It was just so lonely for both of us without a loving dog to nurture. We heard about RAGOM from our former vet and pursued the application process. Seeing Henry on the website was instant LOVE at first site! It was just meant to be! He is the best dog ever and fits right in to our year-round daily walking schedule. He helps us get the exercise we need to stay fit.

Oh my gosh, Henry is not only Handsome... and a Honey... he's also a HAM! A triple "H"! This boy is so photogenic, and loves to pose for the camera with his tennis ball. We had a very fun photo shoot this afternoon, so I just had to share more pictures!

Also, great news from the vet today! Henry's heartworm and fecal tests were both negative - yay! Add another "H", he's a very Healthy boy! Off to get snip-snipped tomorrow (shhh, don't tell him) and then he'll be ready to find his forever home.

So far I think he would do well in a family with or without another dog. He gets along with dogs just fine, but really doesn't seem to want to interract with them much (at least not with my two). While my boys are wrestling around the yard, Henry is much happier playing fetch with me, and runs right past them with the ball. He really has the potential to be a great retriever... he has a good jump on him, and catches the ball! Imagine with a little conditioning, getting his weight up, and building some muscle, I think he'll be quite the athlete.

He's certainly the complete Golden package, my little Handsome Henry. But no dog is perfect. Henry is young, and needs some training. He is a little exuberant right now, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend a family with young kids (but I'm always willing to make exceptions for the right family that has the right expectations -- if they're willing to work with the pup, and don't mind their kids getting knocked over once in a while). Henry is also a bit of a "talker". I'm working mostly from home right now, and have needed to crate Henry some of the time since I'm on a lot of conference calls and cannot always watch him. He crates up nicely with a treat, but when he hears my voice in the other room, he decides it's time to get out and play, and will bark bark bark while I'm on the phone. We're working on this one, since my co-workers don't seem to have as much patience with dogs as I do. I'm also crating him at night until I'm sure he's potty-trained, and he's just fine with that. If everyone else is asleep (or gone at work for the day), he's fine with being crated, he just doesn't want to miss out on any fun!

This Happy, Healthy, Honey of a Golden boy will not be around for long, so email your placement advisor (in a Hurry!) if you're interested in meeting Handsome Henry.
