Cayden is one of the pups from the Golden/Border Collie litter and was brought to Minnesota on Friday with his litter mates, Madelyn and Conner. Cayden was staying at my home until his permanent foster returned back from vacation on Sunday. They are adorable pups were an unplanned litter that needed a safe place to be, so RAGOM came to the rescue!
Thank goodness these guys are in RAGOM's care, because it was discovered on Sunday that Cayden tested positive for Parvo. Parvo is a viral infection and is very serious for any dog to have.
Here is my story:
When arriving at my house, these little guys ran and played and were just a riot! Running and hopping around like little bunnies, it was very fun! Well, the fun did not last long. On Saturday morning Cayden threw up three times and had diarrhea. Not knowing a lot about his history, I was monitoring him and making sure he was still taking fluids, which he was...until Saturday night. I took his temp and it was normal for a pup, so I called the emergency vet and they said that because his temp was normal, see how he does during the night and assess. Well, it was clear in the morning that Cayden was not well. He was lethargic and needed vet care quickly. I scooped him up and off we went to the vet. They knew right away it was Parvo and I was very scared and sad for this little sweetheart. They started IV fluids and off to the U of M we went. He needed 24 hour care and the U is the place to go. After arriving at the U, we were quickly rushed to a quarantine area, as Parvo is very, very contagious. He was admitted and could be there 4 to 5 days. The update I received tonight is that he continues to have diarrhea, but now it is bloody and his white blood cell count is very low. They are treating him aggressively with antibiotics and fluids. The antibiotics are not for the Parvo, they are for any other infections he may develop because his immune system is compromised. Because Parvo is a viral infection, they can only treat the symptoms and hope the pup can fight through it.
In the chaos of making sure this sweet little guy received the care he needed, there was the fact that most likely his litter mates have this horrible virus also. As of tonight, three of these pups are in the hospital. The other two are not showing symptoms yet, but the minute they do, they will be hospitalized, too. They can receive their booster on August 6th, so say your prayers that the two who are not in the hospital stay healthy until then.
Cayden's stay at the U will be at least $1,400. If you have wanted to sponsor a dog and were waiting, this is your chance to help these little precious pups. With three of the dogs in the hospital, it is going to cost a lot of money to take care of their medical needs.
Cayden is not out of the woods yet. The Parvo virus can be fatal and that just breaks my heart. Please keep these sweet darlings in your prayers.
