Cayden is one of the pups from the Golden/Border Collie litter and was brought to Minnesota on Friday with his litter mates, Madelyn and Conner. Cayden was staying at my home until his permanent foster returned back from vacation on Sunday.  They are adorable pups were an unplanned litter that needed a safe place to be, so RAGOM came to the rescue!

Thank goodness these guys are in RAGOM's care, because it was discovered on Sunday that Cayden tested positive for Parvo.  Parvo is a viral infection and is very serious for any dog to have.

Here is my story:

When arriving at my house, these little guys ran and played and were just a riot!  Running and hopping around like little bunnies, it was very fun!  Well, the fun did not last long.  On Saturday morning Cayden threw up three times and had diarrhea.  Not knowing a lot about his history, I was monitoring him and making sure he was still taking fluids, which he was...until Saturday night.  I took his temp and it was normal for a pup, so I called the emergency vet and they said that because his temp was normal, see how he does during the night and assess.  Well, it was clear in the morning that Cayden was not well.  He was lethargic and needed vet care quickly.  I scooped him up and off we went to the vet.  They knew right away it was Parvo and I was very scared and sad for this little sweetheart.  They started IV fluids and off to the U of M we went.  He needed 24 hour care and the U is the place to go.  After arriving at the U, we were quickly rushed to a quarantine area, as Parvo is very, very contagious.  He was admitted and could be there 4 to 5 days.  The update I received tonight is that he continues to have diarrhea, but now it is bloody and his white blood cell count is very low.  They are treating him aggressively with antibiotics and fluids.  The antibiotics are not for the Parvo, they are for any other infections he may develop because his immune system is compromised. Because Parvo is a viral infection, they can only treat the symptoms and hope the pup can fight through it.

In the chaos of making sure this sweet little guy received the care he needed, there was the fact that most likely his litter mates have this horrible virus also.  As of tonight, three of these pups are in the hospital.  The other two are not showing symptoms yet, but the minute they do, they will be hospitalized, too.  They can receive their booster on August 6th, so say your prayers that the two who are not in the hospital stay healthy until then.

Cayden's stay at the U will be at least $1,400.  If you have wanted to sponsor a dog and were waiting, this is your chance to help these little precious pups.  With three of the dogs in the hospital, it is going to cost a lot of money to take care of their medical needs.

Cayden is not out of the woods yet.  The Parvo virus can be fatal and that just breaks my heart.  Please keep these sweet darlings in your prayers.

Sweet, Little Cayden has been adopted and is now HOME!!!  He can run all day long in his fenced yard with his GR furr brother Barley and toddler brother, go to his grandparents lake home and go camping too!  His new family will be able to care for him and "fatten" him up as he is still slightly thin from his parvo virus episode.  His new mom is so wonderful about knowing exactly the foods to give him and the nutrients that he needs to help him grow big and strong!  The S family is perfect for him and it is
always so amazing at the human - dog connection that is made.  There always seems to be the perfect family out there for these sweet rescued furr guys and girls and Cayden is one special pup that needed THIS family.

Thank you Maralee and Mike for opening your wonderful home to this guy.  He has touched many lives with his strength during his illness and many people followed his story.  Another wonderful story of a family brought together with a special little guy.

As always, it was an honor fostering this guy...

Sweet Cayden arrived back at my house on Sunday afternoon.  He had started at my house, then ended up at the U of M, left there to go to another foster and now he is mine again!  He is a bundle of LOVE!  What a cuddle monkey!

We are working on the following things for Cayden - potty training, sitting nicely for treats, walking on a leash, building muscle in his legs.  The things we are not working on because he already does or is - cuddling, being a sweetie pie, sloppy kisses and just being an adorable, happy, gentle puppy!  He has very sweet eyes and looks at you with such adoration.

Cayden enjoys playing with his brother Connor, although they have quite the sibling rivalry going!  They can get really mad at each other, but they can both hold their own.  My 2 GR's are relieved as they now have a playmate in each other.

Cayden has recovered from the Parvo virus and he wants to thank his foster Michelle and her girls for taking him in during his "shedding" time.  Even though he had been at my house, we did not want to chance Connor getting the virus while Cayden worked through getting totally rid of the virus.

Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I love my Frosty Paws...

Slurp, Slurp, Slurp...

This makes me look so fluffy!

You say WHAT???

Cayden was released from the hospital today!  He is now at his foster home with his sister Maddie.  They were pestering each other just like siblings do!

We are so grateful that this little guy made it through this virus.  We do not have enough thank-you's to give to the staff at the University of Minnesota as they saved this little guys life.  We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful facility in Minnesota.  Heartfelt thanks go out to the two individuals that treated him, Doctor G. and student veterinarian Joe.  RAGOM is grateful for your compassion for animals and your expertise and talent in the field of veterinary medicine.  You will always be in Cayden's heart!  I am very excited to share a picture of Cayden with one of his angels, Joe.  It is evident by this picture that they adored each other.

Thank you from the bottom of MY heart, and all of RAGOM as well.
