Hunter 06-096

Profile

3/9/06: Meet Hunter! Hunter is a 5 year old Golden who slipped and broke his ankle earlier this week. He has been into the doctor for evaluation and now we are just waiting to hear when the surgeon is available to perform surgery. The estimated cost of surgery is $2000 - $2500. It's a bad break and the tendons are torn. We will know more once the surgeon examines him. It is also possible that the surgeon will tell us that amputation is the best option. Hunter is a young guy and we hope that's not the final diagnosis. Everyone cross your paws! Regardless of the course of treatment, I am sure Hunter will come out of this with flying (Golden!) colors.

Foster Mom has been remiss in keeping everyone updated about me. She's been working alot lately, something about so many babies being born, so I thought maybe, nice guy that I am, I could help out & do it myself. So here goes...

I've been such a good boy. I graduated to having my cast/dressing changed on a weekly basis instead of biweekly now. Last time the vet was concerned about an area where the skin was thinning. If it gets too thin I guess the screw can poke through...yikes!! So he put on lots of extra padding. I think I gained a pound or 2 just from padding!! Anyway, it sure helped because today the site looked much better, & those other sores were healing nicely too. I guess taking it easy has been worth it. I had fun at the vet. I got to see & make new friends, & the vet gives me lots of treats. I make it hard for them though cuz my tail is always wagging & sometimes the tape sticks to it & they have to start over!! But they think I'm cute & that I give the best kisses!! On the way home today I heard my foster mom's daughter say that she was kinda glad I broke my leg....otherwise they wouldn't have had the chance to foster me! She also says that I have the kind of smile that just makes you fall in love with me!! Can you tell we're kinda sweet on each other?

Foster Mom said to tell you a few other things about myself. I am just about the perfect guy...I don't counter surf or try to get into the garbage, I don't chew anything inappropriate, I like to play fetch & sometimes I get caught carrying around my woobies. I also walk nicely on the leash, & rumor has it that I can hunt. I get along with dogs of all sizes, cats & rabbits. And I especially love kids!! I may not be the match for you if you're looking for a running partner but once I'm done healing I can certainly be a walking partner. Plus I like to swim....boating anyone?? I guess you could call me the dark, quiet, handsome one. I'm a great catch. Foster mom says she's gonna be picky about who I get to call my forever family....they'll need to be as special as I am. If you think you're that family, & are already approved, email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you're not approved yet you still have a chance...I have a bit more healing to do but don't wait too long. Foster mom is getting pretty attached to me...she even thought about adopting me but then they'd have to quit fostering & there's just too many dogs in need for that. Hope to meet you soon...Love & kisses, Hunter

Hunter has been with us for a little over a week, and what a joy he is. He is such a champ. We've been having a tough time with this cast. He had the dressing/cast changed on Wednesday but by Saturday all the soft part on top was worn off & he was developing a pressure sore on the top & I noticed a distinct smell. So off we went to the emergency vet for a cast change. Now he is sporting a longer & slightly less bulky cast. It is harder for him to get around with it but he still manages. However, this morning when I took him out I noticed this one is also rubbing, this time behind his leg. He is not licking at it, simply because he can't reach, otherwise the cone would need to go back on his head. So back to the vet we go this afternoon. Wish us luck!! Hunter puts up with all of this with a smile on his face. The emergency vet said that they often have to sedate the dog to put a fiberglass cast on but not Hunter...he just laid there & gave kisses!! I just want this wonderful boy to start feeling better.

Hunter LOVES kids!! My kids (ages 3, 9, & 12) were on Spring Break last week so Hunter got lots of extra attention. This morning when my daughter left to get on the bus you would think Hunter lost his best friend. He let out a howl & a bark like I never heard from him as he watched her go down the driveway!! He just loves to cuddle with my girls. He follows them throughout the house & is often found napping with his head in their laps. When he is ready for his forever home, kids would definitely be a plus for Hunter.
