IKE here. I met a wonder family this past week. I needed to wait for the kids to get back from visiting their grandparents before I would know if I'm a good fit. We went to the park. Both of them got to take the leash each by themselves to see how well behaved I am using the gentle leader for walking. When they came back Dad Chris asked his daughter what she wanted to ask me. Well.....guess what? She said "can we take IKE home"? They like me and want to adopt me. I have to wait a few days but then I get to go to my forever home.
IKE's FM here. Ike is going to a wonderful home very close to me. They are a perfect family with a Mom, Dad, and two children just the right age for Ike to grow up with. It could not have worked out better for this gentle giant to finally find a loving home where he will be the center of attention. He will never be chained out in the cold again. He has found what all goldens (animals) wish for in their lifetime. I am happy. IKE is my first foster but not my last.

Ike has had a quiet weekend. The town is back to its normal census now that RAGBRAI is over. Ike goes for his walks in the late evening when it gets cooler. He enjoys his walks and the kids he meets. He is so excited on approach but when he gets close to them he sits immediately and is calm while they pet him. He never jumps up to greet the kids or people we meet. I think this is the best part of the walks we take. He lays around with the girls often each finding their own favorite spot. He pretty much ignores the girls now except if I'm giving attention to one of them he has to be johnny on the spot to get some too.
Despite the fact that Ike is a big golden he is gentle and when I look at him I think of Marmaduke or Scooby. There is so much of him to love and he returns it tenfold. He really is just a calm laid back big goof who believes human hands are only for the purpose of petting, throwing the ball, playing tug, or giving him hugs. He is very happy just to lay at your feet while you read the paper and drink your coffee or watch TV. He prefers to be by your side no matter where you are or what you're doing.
If I get this right I am sending some new pictures. Ike is hard to get a picture of because he is always right at your side. Either that or he has become magnetized and is sucked right to the camera everytime I get it out.

Ike sends his best. Great weekend weather after the storm. Ike showed no anxiety when it hit. It was bright, very loud , and the dogs were not impressed. But at 3am I think I was the only one who worried if the computer was shut down.
Ike is off his post surgical activity restriction so we can start walking again. He continues to become more relaxed but I am always vigilant when the girls are close to him. He can share space with the girls for short periods only. When I see him looking sideways and staring it is time to stop, interrupt the activity, praise them for being so good and send them to their respective areas.
Yes, it is just like kids who also need to know their behavior limits, have their personal space, and be given lots of positive feedback when they are learning the rules of living in a home with others.
Ike was alone Sun. afternoon to evening for almost 7 hours. Gracie had my room with the door closed. Tika had the upstairs with the gate up and Ike had the family room on the lower lever. Wow! What a good boy he was. Nothing was moved, chewed, pooped or peed on. He was very happy to see us when we came home. He has never had any accidents or attempted to put his scent anywhere in the house.
Today my groomer came to give the girls their spa treatments. I had asked her to do Ike instead of Tika (she gets a bath every week because of severe skin allergies) which she was happy to do. Ike bounds up the stairs in my house like a racehorse, but, getting in the car and then her van was still a challenge for some reason. Something we are going to keep working on because his size makes it a challenge if you have to help him move forward and up.
I hope the information about Ike's issues with other dogs in the home doesn't intimidate any of our approved adopters. He is laying close to me at this moment while I type on the computer totally relaxed and taking a nap not even interested in what the girls are doing. He is content to be next to me while I have coffee in the morning with a occasional stroke or pat. I think this guy ( if you don't mind) will be willing to share the sofa with you and his head in your lap. He frequently does this when I sit down only wishing physical contact with the ones he loves.
Please consider a visit to meet Ike or any of our RAGOM dogs. No commitment to adopt are ever
expected when you choose to visit. Pictures of our RAGOM dogs show many things but the opportunity to meet and greet can show you so much more in person that cannot be experienced on our web page.
Thank you for reading about Ike, the many other dogs available to adopt, for our sponsors and volunteers(and their families) who give so much of themselves to RAGOM. Fostering a dog or dogs is not just a single family event it is almost a community effort. Socialization of your pet does not occur in isolation but learned through experiences. That is what fosters do. It is a commitment made out of love and respect. Well I guess that is enough soapbox for today.

Ike says hi to all of his fans out there. It has been too long since I have updated his site, sorry to all you fans. Ike has had his first heartworm treatment and has also started treatment for Lyme's disease. He will have his next heartworm treatment the week of the 18th. Four weeks after that if all goes well he should be able to be neutered. Our resident dog Bailey can not wait for that day. Ike sometimes seems to think he is a suitable love interest. Bailey has to remind Ike every so often that he is also a male and even though he only weights 20 pounds he can pack a punch.
Ike also wants to send a big thank you to his sponsor. Without sponsors, dogs like Ike would not be able to get the top notch treatment they need to get healthy. Ike has made quite a few trips to his vet over the last four weeks.
I have sent along some new photos of the big goof also.

Ike saw the vet today and he is 100 pounds and the vet says he should be 5-10 pounds heavier. The vet had a last minute cancellation so Ike's "tutoring" will be done tomorrow 1/8/08. We can't say the "n" word around him. Other than being a little underweight he is in good health and is now up to date on his shots. After a few days of relaxation after his surgery he should be ready for adoption. Ike likes people and looks for attention from his human friends, he frightens our resident dog but it is just because he outweighs him buy 80 pounds. He is not aggressive towards him. He is curious about our cat but not in a bad way, and he even backs away when the cat tells him he is too close. Ike likes to go for walks but he needs some leash etiquette, the Gentle Leader we have is not big enough for him and when he stops to sniff it is hard to get him to start moving again with just a flat collar. Ike was home alone for about 5 hours today and did fine and so far the big guy has not tried to get on the furniture, what a considerate houseguest. I will update this again when he is home again on 1/9/08.
