Isabell joined our household just a bit over a week ago and has blossomed into a delightful girl. Isabell is a five year old spayed golden retriever female who was picked up as a stray and has been in Ragom roughly two weeks. She has exceptionally good household manners – we’ve had no accidents, nothing destroyed (well, ok there was one small notepad that must have looked evil to her) and she gets along famously with our resident dogs. Actually, the first few days she relied heavily on the resident dogs to help her figure out the routines and to find all the good places to sniff in the back yard. As she’s become accustomed to our household and routines, she has opened up and relaxed and her playful personality is shining through.

Since we don’t know much of Izzy’s history, here’s what I can tell you from the time she’s spent with us. She seems to be a very quiet girl – we haven’t heard her bark yet but that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t been busy looking out the front window and watching the birds and squirrels in the tree. She’s watched the neighborhood dogs going by on their daily walks and hasn’t made a fuss, a trait we really value! She follows my husband around room to room and when he doesn’t offer any fun, she seeks me out to see what I might be doing of interest. She loves the basket of dog toys that we have in the living room and over the course of an hour will take out each toy, enjoying them all. She particularly enjoys throwing one of the indestructible toys in the air and playing with it. A chew on the large Nylabone appears to be a blissful experience for her – she closes her eyes and wags her tail and seems to really enjoy herself. We’ve noticed that tennis balls also seem to be an Izzy favorite. She isn’t a particularly active dog and right now is content to wander our fenced yard to check out every scent. With all the rain, we haven’t taken Izzy out for walks but the few times we’ve had her on a leash it appears that she is a very strong puller so we’ll be working with her on that.

Izzy isn’t at all protective about her toys or her food and she takes treats gently if you tell her to sit. She quickly learned to sit and take turns as all the dogs get their treats – she is very comfortable with our dogs, both males and females. She is *not* friendly with cats however – not at all. Besides ‘sit’ Izzy also knows ‘shake’ which she will do over and over, particularly if she wants your attention. She hasn’t shown any interest in jumping on the furniture although she has surprised us once or twice by jumping up on the bed – something that seems to be a huge delight to her.

When we come home – whether we’ve been gone ten minutes or several hours she is *very* excited to see us. She has a nice bouncy welcome with very soft sounds to let you know she’s glad you’re back. So lovely to come home to! She also gives (sparingly) gentle little kisses. Izzy has been to the vet and is in the process of getting current on her shots. She goes back to the vet this week to be microchipped and get one last booster shot. She’s also enjoyed an outing to the local pet store where she helped select some treats and new dog food; she handled the experience and meeting the new people very well. We haven’t had a chance to see how Izzy does with children so we’ll report on that soon. She definitely likes to ride in the car and be part of whatever is going on. We have not crated her at this time, she seems to do fine in the house particularly with her companion dog buddies.

Izzy isn’t a huge girl – she’s medium size with a medium gold soft coat. She has expressive eyes that are rimmed in black and the softest fur on her head – possibly from all the petting she gets! Izzy will do best in a household with another dog with no cats. She’ll be ready to meet possible families in another week after we’ve had a chance to see how she does with children and how she walks on a leash.

We’re so excited for Izzy – this weekend the T family came to visit Izzy and agreed with us that she’s a real sweetie. They’ve just called and will be coming to adopt her this week. We know they’re a perfect match for Izzy and will help her continue to blossom and grow and enjoy the golden life she deserves. And although we are going to miss this little girl, we couldn’t be happier!

Summer is agreeing with Miss Izzy – she’s having a great time lounging and relaxing with an occasional trip to shop for dog food and special dog treats. She’s met some new friends and has handled it all with growing confidence. You can tell when Izzy is happy, she makes very soft puppy-like grunts and squeals which are truly endearing. She’s enjoying watching her humans garden and mow the yard. Things that might have caused her a bit of panic earlier are now just routine events – hardly bothering her at all. While romping through the yard last week, Izzy managed to get something in her eye which prompted a trip to the vet (we don’t mess around with vision concerns) which wasn’t her favorite destination, but again, she handled it well. She also was a very willing patient and has been very cooperative as we’ve been medicating her eye. That’s all healed now and all is good.

There have been several inquires about Izzy, but so far the right match just hasn’t come along. We strongly believe that Izzy needs to be with another dog to help her with her confidence. She cannot be in a house with a cat as she’s had one bad episode with a cat and that’s one too many. Izzy isn’t a particularly active dog. This week she mastered “off” as in ‘do not jump up on me’ and that has been a great step forward for all of us! Izzy is a sweet girl, easy to live with, and easy to pet and pet and pet….

Miss Izzy has had some great adventures over the past weeks, but possibly the best was attending a picnic where there were 20 other goldens and she enjoyed herself immensely. Lots of romping, running, and ball chasing. She had a blast! I thought all the great smells and picnic food would be a test for her, but she was a champ and had great picnic-worthy manners. Although some of the dogs enjoyed the wading pools that had been set up for them, Izzy preferred to just stand in the water and again showed her very lady-like manners. The other big treat was a trip to the groomer where they treated her like a princess – she left sporting a bandana and that well-rested glow of a day spent at the doggie-spa. The groomer said she behaved well, although it was clear that she was ready to get home and back into her routine.

Izzy really has relaxed in the last week and no longer seems puzzled and worried. She loves to convince my husband that she’s a lap dog and would gladly spend as much time there as he would allow. She’s figured out how to jump on the bed in the morning to wake us up and tell us it’s time to go outside. She gives very quick kisses and makes the softest happy sounds when she’s in the mood. Most fun are the times in the morning when she realizes that it’s time for breakfast, and she does a few whirls around the living room and dashes back to the bedroom that express pure doggie joy.

Izzy really doesn’t ask for much – she’s not very rambunctious (well, unless it’s time to eat) and she’s very quiet and well-behaved. If you think this cute little girl might fit in your household, please let your placement advisor know!

Miss Isabell had a quiet week, still lots of storms in our area. The good news is she is not anxious about storms whatsoever and took it all in stride. She also had another quick trip to the vet so now in addition to being current on her shots she has been microchipped and received a clean bill of health. She easily allowed the vet tech to trim her nails and everyone gave her plenty of attention, what more could a golden want?

Izzy continues to relax and show more of her personality – but she’s still a bit skittish around loud, sudden noises. She recovers quickly and she’s definitely settling in. Slowly, she’s also starting to play with our other dogs, not aggressively, but very gently. While she has relied on them to help her adjust to her new situation, she hasn’t really played too much with them yet. But now we’re seeing her interact more and become part of the gang. Each morning she quietly waits for my husband to wake up and every once in a while she will jump up on the bed when she just can’t wait anymore. She has very soft noises that she makes – happy noises – to let him know that it’s time to get up and get going and start petting her. She’s definitely clear about what she wants. While she’s always anxious to get her morning and evening bowl of dog food, she’s not a fast eater. She’s very dainty and takes her time, picking up any morsel that may have fallen to the floor.

Izzy will be most successful in a home that has another dog to help her with her confidence. She cannot be placed with a home with cats, however. Although she has great manners and is a very gentle girl, she draws the line at cats. We’ll know more about how she does with children after next weekend.

If you think Izzy is a good fit for you (and you don’t have cats!) please contact your placement advisor.
