Jackson 04-415

Profile

Jackson is a 1 year old intact male whose family surrendered him because they felt they couldn't spend the time with him that he needs (play and walks). He and my Sadie got along right away and there has been no problem with him adjusting to his new foster home.

So far, I have discovered he has a lot of energy, but nothing that is unusual to being a 1 year old puppy. He came from a home with 2 cats and another senior Golden, but after getting him to my house it became immediately apparent he is very scared of cats. The ones at his old house used to attack him a lot (I saw this happen). This makes him very jumpy to sudden movements and sudden loud noises. My cats want to be friends, and I'm sure that will come with time.

He also seems scared of doorways, and I haven't quite figured that out, but each time I let him in from outside, he gets a little more comfortable with being able to come freely inside. Other than that, we went on a walk today, and he pulled very hard on the leash. He is very strong (80 lbs), and I discovered he likes to chase other small dogs. His surrendering owner also said he chases birds. We will continue to leash train.

He is getting neutered on Monday, and will have a full wellness check and get UTD as well. To sum up my first 24 hours with him, what a teddy bear! He actually initiates dog hugs where he will come up and put his arms up and lean in and press his face and nose into your neck. He also makes a lot of "chewbacca" sounds when playing which is cute. He really enjoyed sleeping inside on the bed last night, as he was usually crated in a garage at bedtime. We have had no accidents in the house, except he did mark one time upon initially entering the house, in the first 3 minutes he was here. Nothing since then.

He is also very handsome, as you can tell from the shots.

Jackson has been doing great being kenneled during the day when I am at work. No accidents in the house or the kennel for 3 weeks! He has been doing great on the Gentle Leader, and I take them both out together for regular walks now. Much easier than when we first started.

I have taught Jackson "sit", and "down", and we are now trying to learn "lay". He was also taking treats with a little too much excitement, and he is now being trained to take treats "nicely". He gets it most of the time, and is very cute.

Jackson is very perceptive on our walks, and notices EVERYTHING. Even the little movements way across the lake. I do believe if he could go off leash, he would be fine unless he saw something to chase. His favorite thing to do on walks is to tunnel and roll in the deep fresh snow. He buries his entire face and just lays there loving it.

This boy will make someone an awesome pet. He's a real heart breaker and snuggle bug. If I'm on the couch, he's curled up in a little ball in the nook of my legs. Happy doggy sighs await.

Jackson is now a full blown TV addict, as you can see from the picture. His favorite channel is, of course, what else but Animal Planet!

Jackson's occasional accidents have continued, so this week I started seriously potty training him like a puppy. This includes crating him when I'm gone, and never letting him out of my site when we are home. He misses having the run of the house, but this has to be corrected. I also go outside with him every time and say "potty outside". When he does go in my presence (which isn't always), he gets his treat reward. Hard to tell if he's relating the treat to the potty yet. The good news is, no accidents inside since I started this training on Monday.

I'm considering getting him to some training so he can socialize with other dogs. I think this could only prove to benefit him and his future forever home.
