Jackson (Zeek 05-380)

Profile

11/2/05: I was on the road at 6:30 a.m. to get Zeek from the Cities, and by 9:30 he was at the vet getting his bath, shots, microchipped etc. He tested negative on both Heartworm and Lyme :) Does have a bit of ear infection in the ears, and little hot spot/infection in his privates, thus postponing any neutering for another week or so. He made the ride to St. Cloud without a peep, and it was only about his 3rd time in a car...in this case the "doggie mobile". Zeek's family got so busy with work and 3 kids, he just wasn't getting the time and exercise he needed. They loved him enough to call Ragom so we could find him a forever home where he can get the time, attention, walks and playtime he deserves, we know you are out there.

Zeek came "home" to his new foster sisters, Reba the resident and Brandy 05-330. Reba takes everything in stride, while after Brandy had enough she let him know in no uncertain terms, keep your sniffs to your self. He is either "kissin" the sides of the girls' mouths (deference) or sniffing the opposite end, which will make for a long week or two :)

Zeek the man is tall, has the dark red coat that lightens up going down his withers and tail. I think he looks skinny at 60 lbs, but vet says he's just right. Maybe it's the fact he's a busy 18 month old puppy and the girls have shorter legs and are shall we say curvy? He has met the cats with little to do. Just wants to sniff 'em out and see what's what. He was too excited to eat tonight, either on his own, by hand, or in a separate room. I am sure come morning he'll be ready to chow down.

I put him on a 40' lead and let him run ...and run he can, he gave Brandy a run for her money or visa versa. They sort of wear one another out.....though while Brandy is ready to nap, Zeek is still wanting to play. He's very strong and pulls on his leash, so tomorrow we will be trying the Gentle Leader. Hopefully that will help get more control with him and save my arm sockets. Over all he is a sweet boy, just a typical puppy in a big body. He loves to come flip your hand while you're trying to type good things about him. He is very smart, seems to be housebroken, and I think with obedience school he'd be darn near the perfect Golden living the Golden Life!!!

I am sending some pics with to try and give you an idea of how handsome he is....but they don't do him justice. He's so busy I couldn't get a lot of close ups of him, so took what I could....Zeek and the girls. Will let you know how it's going after a couple days and nights....hopefully he likes to sleep. If you think you'd like to meet this big puppy, give us a shout at placementatragom [dot] org. We'll be waiting to hear from you.

From Jackson's (fka Zeek) forever family...

The larger dog is Jackson and the smaller dog is Bonnie.

Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Dear Joyce: Jackson has made himself very comfortable with his new family. I am amazed at how good he is. It feels like he has been a part of the family for much longer than 10 days. Bonnie loves Jackson and Jackson loves Bonnie. They are so cute together. They sleep, eat, play and cuddle together. However, Jackson has taken a liking to me and my daughter Alex. My son Jake (age 16) was home sick today and stayed in bed. Jackson stood vigil on Jakes bed while Jake slept. He stayed with him most of the day. It was just the sweetest sight. Jackson seems to be sharing the love, but I think Alex is his favorite. She babies him; he can do no wrong. Both Bonnie and Jackson spend time up on our bed before getting down and going to sleep on the dog bed in our room. He is eating well and has gained a couple of pounds. Both dogs went to the vet today; Bonnie has allergies and I noticed Jackson limping a bit on his front leg. So, he got to meet our lady vet, who loved him. She examined him and found his left shoulder was tender so she took an x-ray. His bones are fine, so she feels it is muscular from playing so hard with bonnie. He is on an anti-inflammatory for a week and we have to get him to “rest” and not wrestle with Bonnie. Yeah, right. We are so happy to have him and will do anything to make him comfortable. No matter what happens to him, he is ours and we will never give him back. We are going to buy him a Christmas stocking this week to put up on the mantle next to Bonnie’s. I’ll send you some pictures of his Christmas with his forever family. I hope you have a joyous holiday. Thank you for your dedication to the Goldens’ who need your love and care. Kristi

PS: I didn’t pose these two pups. I walked in the room and there they were.

Dear Joyce: Thank you for the wonderful job you did mothering this wonderful guy. He has made himself at home, as you can see. The ride home was quiet; both pups slept all the way home. He met his people brother and sister and they all fell in love with each other. We have decided to give Zeek a new beginning with a new name; Jackson, after Jackson Browne our favorite musician. Bonnie is named after Bonnie Rait, another favorite musician who has red hair. Jackson even comes to his new name. He ate 2 bowls full of dog food, slobbered his water as usual, went potty in his new yard, found the empty ice cream carton in the garbage, napped on the bed this afternoon with Tom, laid on the couch with me, snoozed on my son’s bed, cuddled with my daughter Alex and munched on a new bone, all to his very delight. He has found a new home and we have found a new love. I’ll let you know how he does on his first full day at home…..and home alone with Bonnie for a few hours. She waits for him when they go downstairs or when they go outside. She is starting to be a big sister. I know they will be happy together.

Thank you!

Finally....someone realized what a great boy I am and came to take me to my forever home today!!! I have new parents, human brother and sister, and a furr butt sister, Bonnie (see pic). I am so lucky and was so excited to go with my new family I could hardly sit still to have my picture taken with foster mom. Barely got it done and Dad opened up the truck door, Bonnie jumped in and I was like, there, and was not coming out :) Sure hope foster Mom doesn't feel bad, but I am so happy to be going to my Forever Golden Home with my own Forever Family.......thanks to everyone who helped me get to RAGOM, my foster family and especially to my new family for knowing I was the "one". Love to all - Zeek the Man

While Zeek's foster mom has been off in Texas, Zeek is visiting Camp Healy. It seems a good time to update his info with another perspective.

Zeek rode in the van wonderfully and loved meeting the 2 resident canines (even the yappy Corgi). His doggy social skills are wonderful (once he's reminded his nose doesn't need to be sniffing every dog where dogs like to sniff! Once he's neutered that will likely disappear competely since he's not at all dominant). Zeek is interested in the resident cats but doesn't chase them - just watches them intently but he's very easily distracted. He'll need reminders if his forever home has a cat or two.

This boy is an incredible snuggler. Life is good and his tail rarely stops wagging. He's obviously been loved and loves kids (all people actually) - but with his youthful exuberance and size, Zeek and smaller kids aren't a good match unless there is someone devoted to insuring he learns the rules (or he may just run them over without meaning to).

He's very inquisitive and willing to try almost anything. He's a very quick learner and is wonderfully treat, praise and toy motivated, although the first two are definately his motivators of choice! We decided to introduce him to some of the agility equipment. He hesitated for maybe 3 seconds but quickly followed the Corgi up and over the lowered A-Frame as soon as the Corgi was out of sight over the other side. With a few tempting morsels, he was very ready to follow the other dogs through the tunnels and even after we were done, he'd go back and go through the tunnel and over the A-Frame in hopes of getting a few more treats.

There are times "Big and Gentle" seems to fit and then other times he doesn't seem to have a clue how big he is (like when he'd love to crawl into your lap!). Zeek stands a tall 24-25" at the shoulders but is a lean 60#'s. He has a very classy trot with his knees nearly hitting his chin and has an incredible ground eating run but his recall seems to be quite solid! The two times he didn't respond immediately to "Come" it was easy to get his attention by simply turning and running away from him! He caught us in no time! The priority in his life seems to be being with you!

Zeek may be a busy boy for a Golden but then he's only 1 and 1/2 years. Provided he's gotten enough exercise, he's in heaven to just lay around with you. He's been sound asleep by 8 every nite and sleeps like a log until morning.

Zeek's perfect forever home will likely be one with kids* (*please see comments above) or without but a family willing to include him in their lives; one willing to go for long walks or a good game of fetch several times a day; willing to have a snuggling companion in the eve after the day's activities and maybe one who would like to give a try at obedience or some other dog sport since he's SO into learning new things and is so treat and praise motivated. Because of Zeek's great love for people and his gentleness, with maturity and training, our guess is he'd likely make an awesome therapy dog.
