08/18/2013:
This cutie-patutie comes to RAGOM from a family in ND. Jacoby aka 'Coby' is 1 1/2 years old. She is all Puppy with a capital P! She can play all day and most of the night if given the opportunity. Her family loved her very much but realized that they were not able to give her the attention she needs.
Jacoby can get into trouble if left to her own devises with no supervision. She will dig holes and chew on inappropriate items. She's a PUPPY! She will need an adoptive family who understands that she needs to be taught good behavior . She has been to obedience training and I see signs of it. She will sit, though if she is excited it takes her a while to settle down enough to sit. We are working on immediate recall. If she is distracted it can be tough to get to react to 'come' until she feels like it. Jacoby pulls on a leash at first. She weighs around 65 lbs and has a lot of strength. She will need a firm hand to learn good walking habits or she will be pulling her handler down the street as she is always excited to get where she is going.
She is a counter surfer and will jump at the back door barking to come in.
The report filled out by her SO says she runs away and will chase bikes. I will not rule out an unfenced yard but the family that adopts Jacoby will need to get her to further obedience training immediately to reverse this behavior for the sake of Jacoby and the family. You won't want to be chasing her around the neighborhood nor will you want to make an emergency doctor visit if she were hit by a car. Car versus dog - the car always wins and the results are always tragic.
So those are the not so great things about Jacoby. But remember she is a puppy. Everything she is doing now is exactly what puppies do. There is nothing about her that can't be corrected with love, training, patience and time for her to grow up.
Now the good things. She loves people. She has been with a family that had two small children. One was age 11 and the other was 2 1/2. Even though she was great with them, the kids will need to be puppy savvy as Jacoby in her excitement will knock over kids and unsuspecting adults. She loves to snuggle and could be a lap dog if you let her. She leans against you when you are petting her. She is a light golden color with these big brown eyes and a smile most of the time. No aggression whatsoever. She plays hard with other dogs but she can also be submissive in her play.
She has had a good start to obedience training which is a real plus for the family that adopts her. She loves, loves, loves the water. I have a pond in my backyard and she dives in and out and in and then comes out running like she is possessed. She will be a great buddy for the kids to spend hours at the cabin playing in the water. The SO reports she is not afraid of anything. So hopefully that means no storm anxieties.
Jacoby goes to the vet on Saturday to get microchipped and the final okay for adoption.
