How does one not fall immediately in love with this sweet, snuggly puppy? I can't believe how much he is the spitting image of his brother, Logan 08-011. The only difference is that Jake weighed in at 32 lbs. Jake has made quite a bit of progress this past week, due largely in part to our resident Golden, Jazz. Jake has learned to confidently follow Jazz out into our fenced yard to eat snow, run and play, eat snow, visit with the neighbor dogs (on all three sides), and did I mention, eat snow?? His first few nights with us were very sleepless for all concerned until we figured out that Jake has to have free roam to settle down and sleep. Initially we tried crating Jake at night and for very short periods of time during the day. He cannot be in there without having an accident, however - despite rawhides, tennis balls, a peanut butter filled Kong, etc. As a result he has had 4 and is working on a 5th bath. I don't mind, however, as he makes the job an easy one, happily reclining in the tub while you soap and rinse him. He's also totally comfortable with having his ears and feet handled.
He is on antibiotics for two weeks to deal with sores/inflections on both front feet. The vet also is hoping these meds may help with a potential urinary tract infection as he has to go much too frequently. Treats have helped a great deal with the potty training. You just know he knows he "did good" as he runs back up to you with his tail wagging and head tucked for his hug and and snack. Jake also has a hernia that will be repaired when he is neutered at 6 months of age.
You couldn't find a more snuggly pup. The first few days I wondered if he ever slept, as each time I moved about in our house he immediately got up to follow me to settle back on top of my feet as soon as I stopped. It warms my heart to now see him be able to curl up next to the sofa or Jazz and actually stay asleep for a bit if I leave his side. He has also been accepted by our resident cat, who is very particular about any newcomers. Jake lost his first tooth today -- we're much obliged to those rawhides for keeping him busy when he's come inside from playing in the yard.
We're still working on his confidence with new people. We're signing up for obedience school this week hoping this will help. Thank you, RAGOM, for the opportunity to share our lives with this little guy!
