Meet Jake. He’s a 3 year old, medium golden color who weighs 76 lbs and none of it is fat.
We picked up Jake on late Sunday afternoon on July 28th. We didn’t get home until around 5:30PM and by then Jake had been in a car for 9 hours, maybe more. He met, made friends and was playing with my resident Golden within 10 minutes of meeting. When taken to the backyard, Jake spent about 10 minutes of doing nothing but running full bolt around the yard to stretch out from all that car travel. By the time it was time to go to bed, Jake had settled into our household like he had lived here all his life.
Jake knows sit, down, and come. So far, he has come every time he’s been called. He takes treats nicely from your hand and I’ve not seen any type of aggression from him for food or toys. My resident doesn’t always share well and I’ve seen him take a rawhide bone from Jake’s mouth with no problems. He’s completely potty trained and goes all night without having to go out. He’s not been crated while he’s been here and though I’ve only left him alone for about 1 ½ hours, I would consider him completely trustworthy to have full run of the house.
Jake went to the vet on Tuesday for a rabies shot and to get micro-chipped. He also had a heartworm test because there was no indication on his paperwork as to the finding of a previous test. He’s negative. However, Jake‘s previous test and this test confirmed that he is positive for Lyme’s disease and anaplasma. He had some problem with the pills he has to take and was throwing them up but we got his dosage adjusted to the correct one and I haven’t had any issues since as long as he eats before and after taking the pills. I put the pills in a little bit of cheese and he takes them right down. Other than this, he’s in perfect health and was good as gold for the vet. I do have to tell you a cute story that happen while we were at the vet. We were in the process of checking out and a woman came in with a little Bischon mix. Jake was interested but not aggressive to this little dog. They were just sniffing noses, when this little dog decided he didn’t like Jake. He snarled and barked at Jake and Jake backed right up until he was between my legs and sitting on my feet, looking at me with a “Mom, protect me” look. This little dog was maybe 10 lbs soaking wet but Jake decided that it was too much for him.
Jake is a very mellow dog and you’d never believe that he’s only 3. He’s more mellow that my 12 year old resident. He doesn’t jump on people and only barks when there’s a reason. He loves my 10 year old grand-daughter and he’s lived with four kids under the age of 12. He loves to play ball and loves to go on walks. He pulls on the leash but a gentle leader corrected this problem and within two driveways, he was walking nicely by my side. The only thing that I have seen that might be considered an issue is that when Jake gets really excited to see people, he wants to mouth your arms. He takes your arm gently in his mouth but never actually closes his mouth. He stops when you tell him no. We are working on this but this is something that could scare a small child or someone not real familiar with dogs.
Jake is a sweetheart and would fit right in with your family. He would enjoy a fenced yard but I believe he would be fine on a long tie-out as long as he got plenty of other exercise.
