Jazz is a VERY sweet boy. He is extremely soft and cuddly. He is a 6 year old that looks like he is a mix of Golden and likely Husky. It was originally thought that Jazz has Separation Anxiety, but after spending a week with him, I and others do not feel that he has this any longer. He is still currently on a small dose of medications for this, that he has been on for quite some time, but likely could be taken off over time. We leave him home for 4-5 hours at a time with no problems at all. We give him his Kong with some peanut butter in it before we leave, and when we come back, the Kong is half cleaned out and he is patiently waiting at the bedroom door. Have not had a single thing chewed up or destroyed. He also likes his Nylabones and a big stuffed bone toy that he got when he came from "Top Dog Country Club" from an extended stay there. His previous owners did note that he does not like the crate and scratches to get out. We do not crate him since we see no need to, as he is not destructive.

Jazz does not seem very fond of other dogs, and prefers to stay away from them. He has been known to snap at other dogs when they get too close to him by getting in his face. We have two very large dogs here (a Great Dane named Sally and a Saint Bernard named Chief). We carefully introduced Jazz to Chief first and had no problems at all. Chief is a very submissive boy and is very laid back. After Chief, we introduced Jazz to Sally. There also was no problem with Sally. He did try to stay away from Sally while she tried to check him out, but I brought them together and introduced them up close and personal. Sally is still a pup at heart since she is only just over a year old. She likes to get into other dogs faces to play with them, unless they tell her otherwise. She then backs off and leaves them alone (most of the time). We have kept a close eye on Jazz while he is outside with the other two dogs, and have not had a single instance of aggression. The only time we had an issue, was when Sally was in the basement in close quarters with Jazz, and when Jazz gave a quick snap to tell her to get away, she got a small nick on her nose and they had to be separated, but both were quickly corrected. No instances since to speak of, but she has been leaving more room for him.

We feel that Jazz gets attached to people quickly and if not corrected, gets possessive and might bring on the dog on dog aggression. I have to say that he has shown NO aggression towards people or children. It has been isolated to just dogs. I think if the next owner is dog savvy and works with him to socialize him to other dogs correctly, he will eventually get over it. He has been around many dogs while at "Top Dog" and was good with most of them. He just doesn't seem to like dominant dogs in his face. But speaking on his behalf, he has been no more aggressive than most other dogs I have seen, and we go to the dog park all the time to socialize my dogs. I think Jazz would be best as an only dog with continued exposure to other dogs. But if someone had a dog that was laid back, I think he would be fine if he knows the boundaries and rules.

It was originally thought that he did not like cats and that he had a high prey drive. But after we introduced him to our cat that is not scared of anything, we found that was not the case. He was interested in the cat when we introduced them, but just followed him around and sniffed him. He has shown NO agression towards the cat. We even have a picture of him when he slept with Lucky (the cat) next to him. If the next owner had a cat, Jazz would have to be closely supervised if the cat was scared of him, because that might trip a "chase prey" in him, until the cat warms up and is used to him. Our cat does not run around and is very laid back.

Jazz walks well on the leash after he was corrected not to pull. I have walked my dogs with him at the same time, and have had no problems at all. He loves walks and would be a must for the next owner.

Jazz does like to bark at things that he sees as being out of place. We have been working with him to try to curb that. He has been very respectful of our belongings and does not counter surf or jump on furniture. He has his own bed on the floor that he sleeps on at night and doesn't mind it. He has no problems with being possessive of food or toys.

Jazz is in great health and has been neutered and chipped. He is up to date on his shots. He does listen very well to commands.

Updates

Jazz has continued to be a great boy in our home. He has been getting along very well with the other dogs and cat here. The only times we had a conflict were ones that were easily avoidable and were more my fault than his. Sally (the Dane) loves lazer pointers and chases them all over like a cat. I had her going one day upstairs and made the mistake of running it downstairs where Jazz was laying, So Sally went booking down the stairs and Jazz thought she was coming after him (she was obviously going after something and he thought it was him). But there was no damage done. It was actually harder to get Sally to let go of Jazz than it was of keeping Jazz off her. She grabs him by the cuff, not to hurt him, but so he can't hurt her and doesn't like to let go. Like I said, that was my fault for not thinking ahead of what the situation looked like from Jazz's point of view. We have been learning how to avoid any potential conflicts as he hangs out with us.

Jazz has a funny story to tell today about an unexpected visitor that proves that he isn't a bad boy by any means. We were all in the back yard when Jazz alerted us that someone (or something) was outside the front gate in front of our house. So, I went to see what he was pointing out and saw what looked like a cat on the other side. I had to look closer to see that it wasn't a cat, but a small dog (not something we are used to around our house). So I went around and greeted the little visitor. I checked his tags and found the phone number and address and tried calling the number. No answer but had an answering machine. So, I went inside with the little guy to see where on the map he lived. It was a couple blocks over. I couldn't leave the house since I had the kids at home with no one to watch them, so I let the little guy meet Chief (my Saint). He liked Chief and the house while I tried to figure out a solution to getting him home. I was getting ready to get the girls ready to go for a walk to bring him home, when his clasp on his collar came undone and he ran out into the back yard without proper introduction to Sally or Jazz. But nothing to worry about, Jazz just wanted to meet him and sniff him up and he left him alone. Sally on the other hand wanted to play with him (David and Goliath). Poor little guy getting batted around by a Dane, yet seemed to love the attention. I tried to call that number again since there was no problem with them getting along and playing in the meantime. Finally got an answer by a relieved owner and came right over. She was very grateful for us finding him and returning him. Jazz is the one that deserves the credit, because we live on a VERY busy street and he easily could have got hit by a car coming over the hill. Our neighbor dog got hit a few years back and I have always worried about that with ours. We have a fully fenced yard, but you never know. Without Jazz's alert, that little guy may not have seen another day.

But all ended well. I just hope that that little guy stays at home now, because he knows there are three very fun dogs not far from home.

Anyways, I will leave you all with a picture that I love of Jazz waiting at the door for his forever family to pick him up and give him the love that he deserves. Because he IS a very sweet boy.

We know you are out there...a special family looking for a special dog. Not all the dogs on this site are perfect. But, they all want and deserve a loving home. We think Jazz is a great dog and will be a good addition to just the right family.

Jazz has been a very good house guest over the past couple weeks. Jazz loves people and kids. He is very well mannered. He does not counter surf and he does not use the kids' toys as his own chew toys. We have never seen him jump on the furniture, however we are pretty sure he sleeps on our bed while we are gone. That yellow fur on the comforter gives him away. But, that is ok. A dog who sleeps on your bed while you're gone is better than a dog that chews up your bed when you are gone!! Jazz is a very good listener and knows basic commands.

Jazz was taking medication for separation anxiety, but has shown no signs of separation anxiety. He has been gradually taken off the medication and is doing fine with no drugs. We still have not tried to put Jazz in a crate. His previous owner had said Jazz hated the crate and tried to break out. Jazz is not a destructive dog, so we don't feel the need to try and crate him. We keep him in our bedroom while we are gone. He stays busy with his Kong, Nylabone and frequent naps. If we didn’t have any other pets in the house, I would trust Jazz with free roam.

Jazz is also doing well with our resident dogs. He doesn't have any interest in hanging out with them or playing with them, but is ok being around them. He seems to only have issues if he is confronted head on. Sally sometimes tries to play with him and he first tries to walk away, but if she persists, he will tell her to back off. While he does his best to avoid other dogs, he seems to be very interested in our cat. Whenever the cat comes around, he perks up and heads off to follow him. We sometimes joke that Jazz thinks he is a cat. Jazz will lay by our cat and even lick his head.

Right now we are working with Jazz on his barking. It is actually kind of nice to have a dog in the house that alerts you to things, but there are just some things we don’t need to be alerted to. Like the neighbors coming home or the dog up the street barking. He isn't a constant barker, but seems to like to alert us to things at night while in bed. Maybe it is just because the only time there is quiet at my house is at night, so Jazz hears everything. Oh and we have discovered that he is a siren howler. When he is outside and fire trucks go roaring up the street he howls. Our Saint Bernard is a fire truck howler too, it is actually pretty funny.

Well, that is our update on Jazz for now. If you think this great dog is for you. Please contact RAGOM placement (placementatragom [dot] org) and you can meet this sweetie. He is a VERY sweet boy.
