Fourteen years ago our 15-year-old black Lab Tucker passed away. We all deeply mourned her passing, but especially my son Sam, who was quite young at the time. He was bereft at the loss of Tuck, who was his only sibling and whose magic kisses always took the sting out of any wound, physical or otherwise.
Because of this, I started looking for another dog probably sooner than I would have otherwise. My neighbor Sandy had recently adopted a RAGOM dog and she suggested that I go to the RAGOM site to look at the dogs available for adoption.
I scanned the photos, looking at all the doggy faces, and then suddenly I came upon the mugshot that would steal my heart away. This sweet face was looking into the camera, his eyes gazing questioningly at me: “Are you my mom?” Yes, as it turned out, I was.
The three of us went to go meet him, and in mere days he came home with us. Jazzy was the best boy in the family, and with those gorgeous dark brown eyes of his and his wide doggy smile, he soon had us all wrapped around his little paw. We were blessed to have him as part of our family for 14 years. On Friday, May 10th, we had to say goodbye to our darling red boy, our sweetie-bug (not a very manly moniker, but true nonetheless).
The loss of him is profound, but within our hearts is a place the shape of him, and we will carry him with us forever.
Thank you for allowing us to love this beautiful dog.

Here is a picture I took of Aubbe on his morning walk to the park.

We had Aubbe to the vet last Wednesday for a Heartworm test and plan to start him on Heartworm preventative beginning May 1, assuming his test is negative. Also, since we are coming into the flea and tic season we started him on Frontline Plus last week. While at the vet we weighed him and he is now 57.5 pounds. We trimmed his nails and brushed and combed his coat last Monday evening and plan to give him another bath this weekend. Aubbe and I had a nice long walk through the park today using his Gentle Leader. He pawed at the Gentle Leader a little at the start of the walk but seemed to forget he had it on for the rest of the walk. He definitely needs a home with a fenced in yard as he loves to retrieve the rubber Kong and run around the yard with our resident Golden. He has never been around cats so I do not know how he would react to them. However he is very energetic and will tug and pull on our resident Golden when playing with him, something a cat may not appreciate. He also jumps over baby gates with the greatest of ease. He is crate trained and can be crated when he has to be left alone for awhile. He also sleeps in his crate at night as he is still a puppy and can get into mischief if not properly watched.
Here is a more recent picture of Aubbe. He is standing next to my resident senior Golden, Dusty.

Aubbe continues to do quite well. He enjoys romping in the back yard with our resident Golden, Hank. It is fun to watch them race from one end of the yard to the other in sort of a figure eight path. He will retrieve about anything you would like to throw for him. Aubbe is quite energetic, which most puppies are, his age. When he comes in from the back yard he loves to race up the stairs and back down again, especially if he knows one of us is up stairs.
He is also a very good watch dog. If someone strange knocks on the door or someone comes in the house he doesn't recognize he will bark to alert us.
He currently weights 46 pounds and will be about 5 months old on February 15th. He gets along great with other dogs. We had to take care of another Golden over the weekend and Aubbe really enjoyed the extra company to play with.
While the weather has not been very conducive for walks around the neighborhood, Aubbe and I still try to get out at least once a day for a walk. He is still a little timid when noisy vehicles pass by on the street but has improved. I continue to use the Gentle Leader when walking him and he seems to be getting more used to it all the time, but occasionally will put up a mild protest. I continue to extend the length of our walks and do both day and night time walks.
Aubbe is a very nice looking Golden/Lab mix and is certain to make a great companion for some lucky "forever family".

Aubbe is adjusting very nicely to his new environment. He received a new Gentle Leader this week and is adjusting very nicely to it. We went for a long walk this evening and he seemed more at ease than he has been in the past. Some of the noisier vehicles that pass by us on the street still bother him but I have noticed steady improvement on each walk. He stays fairly close to me when walking and doesn't forge ahead. I definitely can see the day approaching, that when I pick up his Gentle Leader, he will come running.
He has not had any accidents in the house since I brought him home and is allowed to have the run of the house when we are home. If we both have to be gone for awhile we put him in his crate as he is a puppy and will chew. We found two of his baby teeth on the floor yesterday so his adult teeth are definitely coming in.
He has a very healthy appetite and currently seems to be doing quite well on Eukanuba large breed puppy food. He seems to really enjoy a small slice of banana in the morning for a treat. He may have learned that from my resident dogs as they both love occasional slices of oranges and bananas.
We continue to work with Aubbe on his sits and stays which he continues to improve on but needs more work. He is learning to retrieve a rubber Kong in the back yard. He and our resident Golden race to see who can get to the Kong first and be the one who gets to bring it back to me.
Aubbe is becoming more outgoing each day and will make some lucky forever family a great companion.
