Jessie 06-218

5/12/06: Welcome to RAGOM, Jessie. Jessie came from a family who has had her for years, but could no longer keep her; we promised to treat her like royalty and find her a fabulous new family. She weighs 62 pounds, which is a good weight for her. She went to the vet today for a checkup, and is in good health, except for testing very, very positive for Lyme's Disease (as in so positive it showed positive as soon as they started the test, which usually takes 3 minutes). She will take Doxycycline for her Lyme's Disease - 2 doses a day for a month. The good news is she's not showing any symptoms of the disease. She is now up to date on all her vaccinations, has gotten a microchip, has a dose of Frontline & Heartguard to take, and had her very long toenails trimmed. Through all of the poking & prodding & trimming at the vet she was a perfect patient and didn't utter a peep. Her teeth are pretty icky, so we're going to treat her to some raw bones over the next few days to see if it helps at all, or she may need a dental cleaning done. The vet also commented that Jessie has very little muscle mass on her body, so we're hoping some nice relaxing walks will help build some muscle.

Jessie is a very pretty blonde 9 year old with just a bit of white on her face. She is a very gentle soul who loves to be near people. My 4 year old and I bathed her first thing and she loved the attention. She is right now curled up taking a little snooze, which I'm sure she needs after the past couple of hectic days. She doesn't seem to know any commands, not even sit, but does whine at the door to go outside. She's getting along great with my two dogs, and is rumored to get along with cats as well. She slipped out of the leash today and didn't leave my side, so I don't think she'd be much of a runner ~ in fact, my 6 year old has her outside on a leash and she is sticking right at her side.

I'd like a couple more days to get to know Jessie a bit better, but if so far she sounds like a gal you'd like to meet, don't hesitate to email placement and ask to talk to me.

We adopted Jessie as a 9 year old female blond Golden almost 5 years ago. We had to put her down today.

She was a lovely sweet dog. She had Lyme disease when we met but we fell in love with her blond/white face and loving manner. She lived with us and loved us completely, and enjoyed daily walks in the park and even a trip to Florida two years ago.

We will miss her so very much.

Hi! My name is Red 05-182. My mom says I am the Wonder Dog. Jessie just spent a 3 day weekend with me. I am in love. Older women are really special and Jessie is even better than most. I wanted to share with everyone some of the things I learned about Jessie.

First, Jessie has Lymes Disease so she has to take an antibiotic twice a day for awhile. I had that, but I am over it now. It makes you hurt. Some dogs get crabby when they are hurting – like my brother Sky. Jessie and I don’t get crabby, we just appreciate kindness and gentle touches even more. Jessie and I are probably the best pill takers in the world. I know there were times in my life when I was treat-deprived. I bet Jessie had some of those times too, because neither of us even notices the pills stuck on the peanut butter. Mom thinks she is being tricky, but put peanut butter on anything and Jessie and I consider it a special treat. When dogs come to our house, my mom gives all of them the stuff that makes me feel so good. Jessie thought it was pretty great to peanut butter treats every morning and every night. Those treats have Glucoscamine Chondroitin, fish oil, Acidophilus and vitamin C in them. We just notice the peanut butter! My mom must really think Jessie is special – she got extra peanut butter treats at noon and right before bed. Mom said something about needing to separate Jessie’s Acidophilus from the antibiotics by 4 hours for her. I think mom just really likes Jessie and wanted her feel special so she gave her extra treats.

Jessie doesn’t even get up on the furniture – not even my mom’s bed. My mom keeps telling me I am not supposed to sit on the couches, but Jessie doesn’t know what she is missing by not jumping on the bed to snuggle! I would have scooted over and made room for her.

Jessie doesn’t know how to sit when she is told – but I usually pretend I don’t know how either. Jessie and I always come running when we are called. Of course Jessie never got very far away from my mom. But, it was funny, Jessie never got in the group of my brother, my sister and me when we were jostling for attention. She always knew where my mom was, but she isn’t a Velcro dog like me and my brother.

Jessie didn’t bark a single time while she was visiting us. Not even when my brother was barking at the neighbor dog. Sky really likes the sound of his own voice! The only sound I heard from Jessie was when she cried by the door asking to go out. She had to go out a lot – of course that is what you expect when someone has a UA infection. But, she never had a single accident in the house. What a woman! Did I remember to mention I am in love?

Jessie even sleeps through the night without making a sound. Well, she did once - my mom figured out that Jessie was starving by 5:00 AM. Then mom started giving her a ½ cup more food just before bed. That made it much easier for Jessie to sleep comfortably until a more reasonable hour.

Jessie wouldn’t play with me. She just showed me her aloof, older woman side. I love older women! I was really sad when her foster mom picked Jessie up and took her home this morning. My mom said Jessie is always welcome at our house. She even said, “If I needed another dog, I would refuse to let Jessie leave.” HELLO! Mom you already have 3 big, special dogs and only 2 hands to pet us with. Molly, Sky and I all really like Jessie, but really, our mom doesn’t need another dog! But Jessie does need her own family to love her and to be loved by her.

Jessie is really special and I only want really special families to meet her. I told her foster mom to be really picky and not to settle for anyone who isn’t perfect.

A little more information about Jessie... this morning she was definitely showing signs of her Lyme's Disease. It took her quite a while to get up & on her feet, and she was still limping pretty significantly about 30 minutes later. Even sitting seems to be painful for her. I am going to get her some glucosamine to help her painful joints. Jessie eats and takes her medication well - slip her pills in some cheese and she's one happy girl. We decided to go to PetCo today, and everyone fell in love with Jessie. She is now taking a nice quiet nap, and I'm sure she's dreaming of her perfect forever family! Jessie was left with free roam of the house this afternoon, and seems to have only ventured upstairs to resume her nap in our bedroom. So far I have to say this pretty gal will make a dream roommate & companion.
