It is truly our pleasure to introduce you to Kali 12-397. Kali is a large, senior, mahogany Golden girl! She is being fostered in SE Minnesota. Kali was taken in as a starving, frightened stray in central Minnesota about a month ago. After some time on a farm and in the pound (we were told), someone finally contacted RAGOM, wondering if they would take her – welcome to the Golden Life, Kali! She came to RAGOM weighing 59 pounds with, according to the vet, “a heavy load of hookworms and whipworms”– the vet estimated her target weight at 75 pounds! In spite of this, her blood tests were good with a few minor problems that the vet was sure were caused by the heavy parasite load. After two courses of worming meds and one week of good food, she weighed in at 64.5 pounds yesterday! Her teeth are surprisingly good and the vet estimated her age at 8 years. We wouldn’t be surprised if she is actually a little younger based on the teeth, but we will never know for sure. The vet found some mammary lumps that will need to be removed before she is ready to leave for her forever home – check back in after Christmas for an update on this.
Kali moved right in with our resident pack that included our four dogs and an extra dog and cat we were baby-sitting – no issues with any of them. So, we are happy to report she is good with other dogs and cats! Over Christmas, she will get the kid test with visiting grandchildren. Kali appears to be housetrained – no accident in her foster home in a week and a half. Granted, she is let out regularly with her resident foster pack, but this is still amazing.
We are finding Kali to be a very sweet, laid-back Golden lady. She has some fear issues – going through doors is a struggle for her, people with sticks (seeing a chuck-it thrower for the first time caused her to drop and shake), and people approaching her from the rear scare her. We are working on these issues – we are confident time and loving care will get her over these problems. Here are some the good qualities about Kali we have discovered in the short time she has been with us:
- She tolerates being crated.
- She has no resource guarding issues.
- She is quiet.
- She is a sweet, mellow girl.
- And, she craves human attention.
Kali has discovered the following things about the Golden life in a little over a week:
- Cheese is good! She wasn’t sure at first.
- Dog biscuits are good! Especially Greenies!
- Dog Beds are heavenly! She has tried almost every one of the 8 or 10 around here.
- Bones are great!
- Toys are fun! She just discovered that today.
Kali probably should go to a forever home with a fenced yard based on her history as a stray. A home with other dogs and/or cats should be fine based on what we have seen so far. Some lucky family is going to get a really sweet Golden! Check back after Christmas for a report on how she does with kids and large crowds of people.
