It is truly our pleasure to introduce you to Kali 12-397. Kali is a large, senior, mahogany Golden girl! She is being fostered in SE Minnesota. Kali was taken in as a starving, frightened stray in central Minnesota about a month ago. After some time on a farm and in the pound (we were told), someone finally contacted RAGOM, wondering if they would take her – welcome to the Golden Life, Kali! She came to RAGOM weighing 59 pounds with, according to the vet, “a heavy load of hookworms and whipworms”– the vet estimated her target weight at 75 pounds! In spite of this, her blood tests were good with a few minor problems that the vet was sure were caused by the heavy parasite load. After two courses of worming meds and one week of good food, she weighed in at 64.5 pounds yesterday! Her teeth are surprisingly good and the vet estimated her age at 8 years. We wouldn’t be surprised if she is actually a little younger based on the teeth, but we will never know for sure. The vet found some mammary lumps that will need to be removed before she is ready to leave for her forever home – check back in after Christmas for an update on this.

Kali moved right in with our resident pack that included our four dogs and an extra dog and cat we were baby-sitting – no issues with any of them. So, we are happy to report she is good with other dogs and cats! Over Christmas, she will get the kid test with visiting grandchildren. Kali appears to be housetrained – no accident in her foster home in a week and a half. Granted, she is let out regularly with her resident foster pack, but this is still amazing.

We are finding Kali to be a very sweet, laid-back Golden lady. She has some fear issues – going through doors is a struggle for her, people with sticks (seeing a chuck-it thrower for the first time caused her to drop and shake), and people approaching her from the rear scare her. We are working on these issues – we are confident time and loving care will get her over these problems. Here are some the good qualities about Kali we have discovered in the short time she has been with us:

  • She tolerates being crated.
  • She has no resource guarding issues.
  • She is quiet.
  • She is a sweet, mellow girl.
  • And, she craves human attention.

Kali has discovered the following things about the Golden life in a little over a week:

  • Cheese is good! She wasn’t sure at first.
  • Dog biscuits are good! Especially Greenies!
  • Dog Beds are heavenly! She has tried almost every one of the 8 or 10 around here.
  • Bones are great!
  • Toys are fun! She just discovered that today.

Kali probably should go to a forever home with a fenced yard based on her history as a stray. A home with other dogs and/or cats should be fine based on what we have seen so far. Some lucky family is going to get a really sweet Golden! Check back after Christmas for a report on how she does with kids and large crowds of people.

Updates

Great news! Kali found her forever home this weekend with the “K” family! She will be the only dog at her new home on an organic grain and Alpaca farm. One of her new duties will be acting as a greeter in her new Mom’s beauty shop. Sounds like a good job for this sweet girl! Have a great Golden Life, Kali! We are going to miss you, and we will never forget you!

Kali would like to share two final pictures taken before she left for her forever home:

Kali’s final day with foster siblings, Lily and Riley.

Ready to leave with her new family!

Since we last sent an update on Kali, a lot of good things have happened:

  • Kali has a new sponsor! THANK YOU SO MUCH to Kristin N for sponsoring Kali!
  • The pathology report on the mammary tumor was clean – no cancer!
  • Kali attended the RAGOM Meet & Greet at the Rochester Feed & Country Store (thanks, Netta, for hosting us!). She was marvelous!
  • Kali is looking much better these days – after about 6 weeks of being parasite-free and having lots of good food, her coat is starting to shine.
  • Kali’s energy level and playfulness have noticeably increased. She has been initiating play with her foster siblings and goes into an animated dance routine when it’s mealtime. She is one happy girl.

Kali would like to share a few more photos of life around the foster place with her foster brothers and sisters:

That bag sure smelled like there was some food left in it! With foster sister Lily.

Posing with wee foster brother, Peppi, and headless FS, Koko.

 Vermin in the woodpile!

Kali is now healthy and ready to move on to her forever home. She has a lot of love to give and a lot of life to live!

Merry Christmas Happy Holidays from Kathy M and Otis!

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

The past two weeks have been a challenge for Kali – more worm treatments, surgery for mammary tumors, spaying, and treatment for a urinary tract infection. In spite of all this, Kali has dramatically improved both physically and mentally. In the month she has been with us, she has transformed from a very scared, distrustful dog to a happy, confident Golden lady. The day of her surgery, Kali had gained almost 10 pounds and appears to have added even more in the last week – she still has a long way to go, Kali is a BIG lady…

Kali has been learning things, too. Here are a couple of the things Kali has learned since starting the Golden Life:

The Golden Life means never having to go without a meal!

Greenies are GOOD!

Sweet potato ears are good, too!

Again, a special thanks to Kali’s sponsors! Her vet bills have gone north of $1000 and the extra help is appreciated!

We are still waiting for the path results from the mammary tumors removed last week. As soon as the results come in, we will send another update.

One final note – Kali will be at the meet-and-greet event at the Country Feed Store in Rochester on the 26th. Please plan on attending if you would like to meet this wonderful Golden lady.

What a wonderful Christmas for Kali! She received a nice present in the form of a RAGOM donation from Kathy M and Otis! And, in addition, she has sponsors! Mark and Lynelle E are Kali’s new sponsors! Kali and her Foster Mom and Dad can’t thank all of you enough for your generosity during this Christmas season! But, we will try… Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Kali is scheduled for surgery next week and these donations will help greatly.

Kali is just ending her third week in her foster home. She can now navigate the three doors to the back yard and back into the house without fear and needing to be led on a leash. Great progress with her fear issues! Our neighbor who saw her the second day we had her saw her again around Christmas. “She looks bigger!” Yes, she does – after a couple of weeks on good food, she is standing up straight. She is more trusting and her personality is starting to bloom. Here is Kali with her favorite new toy – a road kill toy stuffed with an empty soda bottle.

She collects toys on her bed in the bedroom like a litter of pups. We are guessing that sometime in her past she was a mother and we’re sure she was a good one.

Kali passed the kid test last week during our Christmas celebration. Our 17-month-old granddaughter walked up to her (they were eye to eye), slap-patted her between the eyes, and said something that sounded sort of like “good puppy” and Kali licked her arm. She took the extra 6 adults, 2 kids, and 4 dogs in the house in stride.

The poor girl is still struggling with parasites, which means a couple more worm treatments. Hookworms are very tough to get rid of…. In spite of that, she gained 2 more pounds last week. She is scheduled for her surgery to remove the mammary tumors next Tuesday, January 8th. Watch next week for an update when that is over.

We are planning on bringing Kali to the event at the Rochester Country Feed Store on the 26th. If you are interested on meeting Kali in person, please come!
