Katie is an awesome 5 year old female from a puppy mill in Tennessee.  With all the filth washed off she is a beautiful medium/dark golden.  She is very gentle and sweet girl that likes to be around people, she is just scared.  She is very timid and tends to slink around until she finds a safe spot such as in the bedroom corner and by the bookcase/computer.  She will go outside but she is afraid to approach the door if anyone else is near it, so you have to go in or out first and keep going.  If you stop she will turn around and go back.  If I put a leash on her she will then follow me pretty well.

Katie will creep out of her safe spot in the bedroom to see where you are but once you turn and look at her she turns and runs back.  She does well with free roam at night and while we are at work.  Even though Katie was an outdoor dog, in the week we have had her she only had one accident - on the one day we were unable to come home midday to let her out.  We were quite excited the past weekend when we saw Katie and our young resident dog playing chase in the yard.

Katie went to the vet for a general check up.  Other than her dirty ears, a few bad teeth, and a reported grade 1 heart murmur (minor and typically no treatment required) which our vet was unable to detect she seems healthy.  Katie's protein levels were borderline low, and will be rechecked when she goes in for her spay.  Her teeth will be taken care of at that time too.  More to come as we learn more about Katie.

Katie went to the Goldzilla picnic today and did very well.  She enjoyed wading in the lake, sniffing a few Goldens, and taking it all in.  Katie's favorite part of the picnic was meeting up with her former kennel-mate, Rosie (10-077); it became obvious that Katie remembers Rosie - she was very excited to see her.  She sniffed, wagged and rolled on her back wiggling away.  It was very cute and heart melting to see Katie so happy to see Rosie.  Katie continues to take baby steps in adapting to her new life; she grows more trusting and less timid every day.  Katie loves to go for walks and when she sees me holding her harness she comes over and stays until it is on.  Katie did meet the MF family who is interested in her and we are working out some logistics.  Katie's paws are crossed that she will have a new home soon.  She continues to be camera shy (and very much on the alert for one) so I don't have any great pictures but include this one of her playing.

Katie is enjoying the summer, time at the lake, walks, playing with the resident dog, and laying in her pool - the golden life.  She is so gentle and sweet, she melts the heart; she just wants to be with her people.  Unless of course she sees a squirrel or rabbit, then she really wants to be with the squirrel.  Katie handles the long car ride up north like a pro; she loves walking along the back roads near the cabin, keeping an eye out for Hope the little bear cub who was born down the road.

Katie is very happy with the pretty new harness which makes her walks more enjoyable.  But she can still be a bit nervous with new experiences, for example she likes to keep a close eye on the ceiling fans, sunlight reflecting on the ceiling as the door opens, etc.  It surprised us to find that Katie is really afraid of deer flies (she knows the difference!), she will crawl up onto a lawn chair to try to get away.  I have to admit that Katie does like (and we allow her) to sleep on the bed right next to us; and she usually sticks her face under our pillow or arm.

Katie has been a busy girl.  She loves the water so much I found her a plastic kiddy pool and she loves to lay in it.   She also had her first road trip to the cabin and she rode very well in van.  Katie loved the lake - she swam around, met a cabin full of furry pals, and did well around the kids.  Katie continues to take baby steps in overcoming her timidness - she loves to be with her people and get attention and is a little less skittish with quick movements.  Katie and her friend Gillis love to run and play.  She carries her toys around and is very proud of them.  She gets along with all other dogs she has met.  Katie would love to have a home with another dog to play with - she would be a great 2nd dog as she knows how to get along with others very well.

Katie is still available to the family looking for an easy dog to have around.  She doesn't bark and is very good at meeting other dogs.  She also met my young nieces the other weekend with no problems.  She was pretty good about letting me trim her feet and nails.  She walks great on a leash and loves her walks, occasionally stopping to sniff.  I believe the walking has helped to trim a few pounds from Katie is she is looking good.

Katie loves to lay down in water while on her walks - even mud puddles. I'm guessing she will love to have a small plastic swimming pool.  Katie likes to be by us and will follow us around the house - she is laying at my feet as I type this up.  She will now even lay down behind my chair when I watch the evil TV.  However, the camera shyness is not so easily overcome- see Katie hiding from the camera in this picture.  Poor thing.

Katie is most happy in the yard playing with her buddy and walking at the preserve.  She rides well in the car which is good because she loves to come along.  We had a close call today when the wind blew my door open and out she went.  Luckily I grabbed her and refused to let go - much better a skinned knee than risking her getting lost, although I wouldn't be surprised if she went right to the car.  Katie did learn something new this weekend - she  started to go in and out the doggy door after weeks of watching her buddies do it.   If Katie is too scared to come when I call her name, I just start petting the resident dog(s) and before you know it she is standing in line for a little loving.  Katie will make someone a wonderful companion.

Katie is a great girl and with her ear infection cleared up, healthy.  She walks very well on a leash, a youngster could easily walk her and rides well in the car.  Her favorite things are playing with other dogs;  being with her family; walks, especially if they involve bodies of water - any type will do;  and treats.  Katie's least favorite things are cameras, walking by the TV, and being left behind.  Katie has run of the house when we are not home with no problems - well, except getting out the door without her.  She still likes to stay in certain safe spots in the house, like by the computer desk, by the side of the bed, etc. but has been getting braver.  More and more she stays where you are.   Katie is so afraid of cameras that it has been a challenge to get some good photos of her playing, so I have attached a couple of her doing her best to hide from the camera - behind the bush and on the far side of the garden.  I didn't have the heart to take more and scare her.

Katie is learning to love the golden life!  As you can see in the pictures, she is playing with her foster sister - chase, dig hole, and stay away from that camera.  Katie is very camera shy so it is hard to get good pictures of her.  Luckily it’s hard for her to see the camera with her head in a hole.

Katie is now spayed and will get her stitches out on Saturday.  Her blood levels are great, her ears are a lot cleaner, she is no longer constantly itching - just the normal occasional scratch,  and she is a bit braver now.  She will greet us at the door when we come home from work, hang around awhile before going back to her safe spot and get this - she loves to go for walks at the preserve and does awesome!  She mostly walks right at my left side (an occasional sniff) and greets the dogs she meets very well with a little sniffing.  Katie is most proud about how quick she learned all about treats.  On the walks, if she leaves my side (on the leash) I call "Katie, come" and she comes.  Of course, she knows she gets a treat but at this point that is great progress in making it fun to come to her people.

Katie has not had any accidents after that one time shortly after she came to her foster home - so about 3-4 weeks.  When we were in the front yard the other evening we saw her peeking out the window at us.  When she saw us looking at her she ran off.  Katie is great around cats and mostly ignores the cat and walks right by it.  Although I try not to encourage my foster dogs to get on the bed, Katie saw my dogs doing it and one day I walked in and there she was on the bed - I swear she was so proud of herself and shining with it.  Katie really loves to be around other dogs and to do what they are doing.

She does not guard her food and lets the other dogs come up to her when she has a chewy or bone and even try to take it.
Because she is from a puppy mill and easily scared a fenced yard is a must.  Katie would love a forever home with another dog, cats are fine, a fenced yard, and lots of love.
