Profile

Katie arrived yesterday and she was a happy girl. Katie is 7 or 8 months old, not spayed - yet - and a sweetheart. Katie was very excited to start living the Golden life and played beautifully with my Oakley, Amber, and Arthur. She jumped right into the kiddie pool within seconds and just loved it. She was dirty and full of ticks when she showed up, so we gave her a bath in the kiddie pool. She will need another one after the slobber fest from Oakley and Arthur. We removed probably 10 or more ticks; I'm pretty sure I will find more.

Getting Katie into the house for the first time was a challenge. I tried coaxing her in with treats but that didn't work, so I picked her up and carried over the threshold. This is probably the first time she has been in a house and oh boy, did she like it! After helping her into the house the first time, it was no problem after that. Sometimes she hesitates but she's usually excited to come in or go out.

The surrendering owners said she likes to jump on people, but she hasn't done much of that at my house. Before she was chained up outside and most likely jumping for attention; at my house she is able to run and chase the other dogs and come to me when she wants to be petted. She runs off for quick adventures in the yard and comes running back to me like she just won the lottery, then off she goes to check on what the other dogs are doing, and comes back again. I would love for her to have a playmate in her new home. She loves playing with my two younger dogs and she fits right in to our little pack.

Katie is full of love and she is very gentle with her kisses. She listens to her name and happily comes running when called. Her first night at my house she had a hard time settling down. I think she was nervous, but happy. I thought maybe I would try to bring her to bed with me to see if she would lay down and go to sleep for the night. She was restless and nervous, so after a few hours I decided I would crate her. She mostly would lay down and then get up and move around; I think she fell asleep in my bed for about 10 minutes. Once I crated her she barked for the first 15 minutes and then settled in for the night.

She is a love bug looking for a loving family who has time for her and will include her as a part of their family. She will need obedience training to be the perfect dog, but she is already close to being a perfect dog! If you want to meet a very special girl, let placementatragom [dot] org know you're interested. More info to come as I get to know this sweetie more?so far no accidents in the house.

Katie told me today to send another picture of her, so her new Mommy and Daddy could see how cute she is. She has become very special to us, even though we know that we are only her foster parents. She's a lot calmer now that she is just about out of heat. Katie is so smart, she knows that when I leave I always take my purse, so somtimes she takes my purse off the table and hides it under the table. She does not chew on it though. One day my son couldn't find his shoes, and here Katie had placed them both on top of his bed.

Katie really loves to be with people. She plays a lot with Franny and tires her out. She would really like a small pool to play in instead of her water dish. It's a little too small. We are going on vacation for a week so Katie will have to stay at a new foster home till I get back. I hope that sombody kind will give this sweet little girl a permanent home, so she will not have to move from home to home any more.

It turns out that Ms. Katie has roundworms and coccidia. Coccidia is a common parasite found in domestic animals. So, along with her antibiotic she is now taking medicine for the coccidia. I'm taking her back to the vet for blood work to see if there is anything else we can find. I told Ms. Katie that we would do everything we can to make her feel better. Katie is such a sweetheart. Currently it appears that she is nervous about being in the house, so we are going to start spending time doing one-on-one training to help her adjust. By the time Katie goes to her forever family she will be perfect. To help with her energy, we are starting a 30 minute walk in the morning, play time with the dogs, and then work on commands and repeat this in the evening. This program will help her relax about being in the house. Dogs go through adjustment periods when they aren't used to something....trust me, she has already figured out the luxuries of being in a house; she loves doggie beds, pillows, air conditioning, etc. She is good in the house, but at bedtime she becomes restless and appears not to know what to do. By working with her each day she will become more relaxed and ready for a long night's sleep.

Katie has come along way in just a few days. At first I needed to carry her into my house. It only took one time to show her that it was ok to come in. Now she comes in when called and happily goes out. The first night when we went to bed she would not come down stairs, so I picked her up and brought her down and just like the door, she is happy to run up and down the stairs…even when she doesn't need to. I believe she just likes to hear me say GOOD GIRL.

On 6/28/05 I took her to the vet for her exam and she weighed in at 50 lbs. Katie is running a high temp of 104 (normal is about 101-102). We are not too concerned with the fever right now because she is eating, drinking, and playing. Since she has a fever we are unable to update her vaccinations or spay her at this time. After she runs the course (10 days) of antibiotics, we will bring her up to date and spay her. My vet feels that she could go into heat at anytime so PLEASE say a little prayer that it doesn't happen in the next 10 days. Just to be safe she is grounded like a teenage girl; she is only allowed out under supervision, which is ok because it's summer and we hang out in the yard together all the time anyway. Everybody loved Katie at the vet clinic. She was on her best behavior; never jumped up on anyone, curled up on the floor with Dr. Grant for her exam, and even sat when we asked her. She is very smart and catches on quickly.

Katie is blooming and changing on a daily basis. On 6/28/05 she picked up her first toy. The first few days she would pick up a bone or rawhide and ignore the toys. Yesterday she retrieved the Kong 3 times for me and then like most puppies, was distracted by a game of tackle the Golden…which Katie is very good at. Katie enjoys chasing and running around with my 2 young Golden boys. Yesterday Katie figured out that if she can't catch up to Arthur, all she has to do is grab his tail and he will slow down. Katie is very smart - yesterday we started working on the sit command and she is catching on quickly.

Katie loves having playmates around but she enjoys having her humans close by as well. She gets along great with dogs of all ages. She plays rough with the boys but is gentle with my senior, Amber 04-267. After a great game of tackle or chase the Golden, she is content to come and lay her head in my lap for a power nap and then she's up and ready to go again. Katie's favorite thing to do is run and belly flop into the kiddie pool, soak up as much water as possible, then spray everyone with the water…who needs a sprinkler when you have Goldens??

Last night Katie leaned over and whispered into my ear, "I want a family!" Ok, so it sounded like a big slobber kiss but I know what she was saying. My ideal family for her would be some willing to continue her training; she really loves the one on one attention and it's a great way to bond. A home with another dog; she really loves playing and interacting with other dogs…to be honest I don't think there is much she doesn't like. Oh, and she would like a kiddie pool and trips to a lake. Katie loves water - this morning she tried to jump in the shower with me. When we are outside she will let me wash her off with the hose or in the kiddie pool. If there is water and petting involved, this girl will let you do anything.

I'll work on getting some better pictures this weekend for everyone to enjoy. It's difficult to get good pictures of pups because 1. they believe their noses should touch the lense 2. they are always wiggling with enjoyment 3. they're just a lot quicker then I am!

Katie wants to wish everyone a happy 4th of July weekend. She sends her love and doggie slobber kisses out to everyone.
