Kea (Nikki 06-178)

4/15/06: Say hello to Nikki~

Nikki is sister to Vincent and as you can see is part Lab and part Golden. She is a very sweet timid girl. We got them last night through a chain of volunteers that saved them from being put to sleep. The character they have shown us in just this short time tells us it was well worth the effort.

Nikki is a very big snuggler. She loves to just sit and watch the world go by. She does enjoy playing with her stick, but that gets dull kinda quick and it's back for a good petting. She will be going to the vet next week for a checkup and will be ready for her forever home. Stay tuned for more updates!!

We adopted Kea (at the time known as Nikki) in May of 2006, and her RAGOM number is 06-178.

As you will see in the photos, Kea is not your typical RAGOM dog. She is often mistaken for a purebred black lab. However, she most definitely lives "the golden life". When we adopted her, we wanted to name her with a Hawaiian word. The Hawaiian word for "black" is too long, so we settled on Kea, which means "white". It's our little joke that she is the complete opposite of what the word means.

Nikki was a frightened, submissive dog when we first adopted her, and was terrified of our (at the time) 2 1/2 year old daughter. We had to do a lot of gentle, calm interactions to teach her about being with children. We went on many walks where she skittered and shied away from every leaf, noise and animal. As the photos show, boy has Kea changed! Our family has grown by one since that time, and Kea is adored and loved by both children, and returns the affections wholeheartedly. She is their protector and whenever a cry arises, she is the first one at the scene. She loves walks in the woods behind our house and the snow, and is rarely frightened by anything she encounters outdoors anymore. She is our companion and our big snuggler, and we couldn't imagine life without her.

Thank you for all you do for the dogs, and for putting together the calendar! It all means so much to so many animals and people.

Nikki continues to grow more Golden as the days go by. She is a true Velcro girl. Nikki has been learning to walk on a lead and that is going well.

We are working on basic commands such as sit. She is still very timid and does not like loud noises. She is such a cuddler!! Nikki sleeps in the crate at night and will 'kennel up' if shown a treat. She will not have an accident in the crate during the night (about seven hours) and about four hours during the day. She gets along with all the other dogs and loves to give kisses, as well as just sit on your lap and watch TV. House training is proving to be a challenge, but I think that is because we have so many dogs, that she just gets to playin' and forgets; but she is doing much better about 'going potty' on command. Nikki goes to the vet on Monday for her spay and will be microchipped. She is ready for his new home. Please contact RAGOM if Nikki melts your heart as much as she does ours!

Nikki had her vet check up today and except for dirty ears, she is healthy. She weighed 24 pounds and was a trooper when she got her shots! She loves to play with her brother and follows him everywhere. Nikki is a very affectionate dog, she will come up to you and sit down so you can give her pets and rub her tummy! She is a very sweet girl, ready for her forever home.
