Kenzie 06-345

Profile

9/16/06: Kenzie has been with me for almost one week now. She is 13 1/2yrs old, weighs 55 lbs & has been living outside in a back yard almost all of her life with little or no attention. She is not housebroken and, since she is an elder, has little bladder control so needs to be let outside often.

We visited the vet twice last week. She has cataracts, limiting her vision, and night blindness. She has ear infections in both ears which we are treating and, since she received no exercise, has some muscle atrophy in her hind legs. We are making progress with glucosamine supplements and mini-walks. She's responding well and this morning walked for twenty minutes, at times at a trot (when she spotted a squirrel)! She also has allergies which are making her itch a lot and is now on steroids & fish oil supplements to help her discomfort.

With all of that, she is a sweet girl. She's alert and follows me around the house, if not physically, with her eyes, so I know she sees.

Kenzie has been with me for two weeks now and is coming along very well. A follow-up visit to the vet yesterday produced the comment that "she is improving and coming into her own." Our numerous brief and sloooooow walks are helping strengthen her hind legs, her ear infection is almost cleared and she has gained a pound or two. Supplements and a bath changed a dull coat to a lovely shiny red one. I think she's beginning to feel pretty good about herself. We still struggle with her allergies and housetraining but I'm optimistic. She's quite a sweetie!
